Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi gang, I'm still alive and kicking. I have become much more active now that the weather is gorgeous! Wedding in less than two weeks and all is well. I've been married for 25 years today. I've been very busy at work and have not been able to keep tabs on you all. And I haven't been able to bring myself to post because I'm so out of the loop and I'm not competing this year. I'll return to read your previous posts and try to catch up. I'm especially worried about Steve's harmonica elbow! Patty |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PATTY! PattypattypattypattyPATTY!!! Good to have you back.....and big special congratulations on the 25th today! You're closing in one us, but of course I hope you never catch us -- that would mean that we've eother died, or Lynn has given up on me. (Offhand, I don't know ehich would be wose! ![]() ![]() We were......um......34th on Dec. 30. That's when we were officially married, but we started living together on Oct. 1 of '74. So depending on whether you follow the asterisked one or not, we're made it to (through!!) either the 34th or the 35th. Time flies! Last week i was trying to remember when Greg's wedding is, and I was guessing either the 12/13 weekend or the 19/20. i guess it's the 19/20, eh? Are you all ready for it? Are you going to look especially resplendent? WILL YOU POST PHOTOS?? Thanks! As for the harmonica shoulde, it's doing swell. And now that the bug that lodged itself in my ear seems to have either tumbled out or burrowed its way into my brain, I guess I'm doing double swell. Aren't those the Two Keys to a Fulfilled Life -- sound shoulders and bug-free ear canals? Until you get caught up.... Jess had four tough events in three weeks towards the end of April and into early May, tow of which were triathlons, and sshe shone in all of them. She is preparing for Eagleman in on the 13th, and if she can just avoid road-rage whackos, she'll be fine. Lisa is also prepping for Eagleman, and she is fresh off a stunning third-place a.g. finish at Columbia Triathlon. I saw her down there, and whatever you do, don't cross her. She stormed the podium so as to right a wrong in the tabulations for the maried couples awards, and I think Bob Vigorito, the RD, saw his life flash in front of his eyes. And she really approves of Ryan's shaved legs! Nathan had his baby a couple months ago........and is maybe also gearing up fro Eagleman. I think not, though, as he hasn't posted here in quite some time. Neil is hobbling about, dealing with a likely stress fracture of one of his feet. His move to nirvana went well, however, and the switcheroo with his company being bought seems to have worked handsomely in his favor. Mindy has been doing more running, especially with a co-worker who is puuting her through her noontime paces. On the other hand, she has been quite quiet recently, but several of her posts had her making rumblings about doing duathlons this season. I suspect she is wilting already down in the georgia heat, looking for every chance to escape to her own valhalla in the mountains. Keep in toch, kiddo, and congrats to you and Mike! Give him a big old hug from me, okay?? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - What striking differences!! You could market those photos and become the covergirl for the benefits of a comprehensive bike fit! Thank you very much for those, as it's further incentive to get my own position tweaked. You must be really thrilled about the possibilities that will arise from the new positions, huh? Merci beaucoup!! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() great pics, jess!! i'm really happy you got that fit!!! I think you will find it will make a huge difference. I wanted to send you a quick warning about the choptank water temperatures too. someone just posted on our team forums that the current water temperature in cambridge is 75 degrees. with just shy of 2 weeks to go and a hot forecast on the agenda it is feasible that wetsuits will not be allowed. it might be a good idea to mentally prepare for this to be a non-wetsuit swim. vigo has made the joke in years past that he drops a bag of ice in the water near the official's thermometer on race day, but i'm not sure how much wiggle room he actually has.
|
|
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Well, THAT'S intriguing! One of the silver linings to the possibility of a non-wetsuit swim at E-man is that at least there is some salinity to the water, which means slightly more buoyancy. For me, every little bit counts, so if the salinity is as much as 0.000003 ppm in one body of water as opposed to another.....I'll take it! You mention wiggle room, and I often wonder about fudging room, or "looking the other way" room. I mean, race-day conditions cause some races to modify swims or, as with Steelhead 70.3 last year, even cancel it and turn the thing into a duathlon, so at Eagle there are variables that might worry Vigo: -- current -- chop -- jellyfish So maybe Vigo and the USAT people will get together pre-race and determine the water is 79.......but will announce 77.8 and say wetsuits are legal, just to prevent something far worse from happening. I just wonder sometimes! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA again - And once word gets out that E-man might be sans wetsuit, there will be a very brisk run on legal swimskins through the various on-line retailers! The reverse case happened at Mooseman several years ago, when predictions of frigid temps caused everybody to look around for neoprene hoods and booties. In my case I alteady had a hood, but as I drove down I stopped at an EMS and bought booties, just in case. (I ended up returning them, unused and even unopened.) |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA and JESS - I would be tough to crack the top three for M60-64 at Eagleman! -- Steven Smith: Once again, #1 in USAT rankings for his a.g., whatever he is in at the time! -- Chris Wren: #7 in M60-64, solid at longer stuff. -- Art Halttunnen: New to M60-64, but last year at 59 was #20 in M55-59! USAT 2009 points: Smith -- 87.09 Wren -- 82.22 Haltt -- 85.03 Smith will have to work hard, but my bet is Smith, Halttunen, Wren. I'm personally cheering for David Adams, but I don't think he's at the level those three are at. I'm bored. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Prior to this post, it was 5634 for this group and 4356 for the other. That is closing in on 10,000. Should I celebrate? |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Of course, with periodic posts talking about being bored and whatnot, it's not like the 10,000 posts have all been meaningful and worthy of celebration, huh? |
|
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 10,000 is definitely worth a celebration! Sorry I have been quiet. I have been trying to maintain a minimum of training. It is difficult with no race on the horizon. And it is hot. I have plenty of excuses! Have a great weekend all! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MINDY! I was getting all lonely without you! I'm glad all is well, and that your domestic plans, at least, are falling into place. I too hope that wherever you go is not festooned with tra balls, or worse. It is so terrible, it's tough to put into words. Pensacola today, and our paper carried an article that said that depending on currents and all, there is the possiblity of a wrap-around of Floridsa and as far north as NC. Sweet Mother of Mercy. It has been on our radar for a few years to visit the barrier islands off Alabama, but I think that will never happen for us. WE will survive that, but for all the people whose livelihoods and lifestyles have been permanently affected.......words escape me. Enjoy the build towards training, and then the build towards a race. Maybe as a Full service Mentor I will choose one for you, register you in it.....and then surprise you with it upon your return from the beach. Uh, no? Not a good idea? Oh. Okay, then! ![]() ![]() Keep in touch, don't drift too far, and regards to Ivan! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Reading all this has got me antsy to train. Doc should clear me for swimmig in 9 more days and probably OK me to get on the bike as well. At least on the trainer. I will have to try to build some base with Swim and Bike and just hope for the best in a few months when I can return to running. GOt my new Saxo Bank jersey in today so I really want to ride. So as you can probably tell the MR showed a stress fracture. Looks like 3 months total with no running. I am in a boot for 9 weeks (3 down). And I am going to see a doctor in China Town tonight to get some eastern medicine to mix in with it. We did this when Milagros broke her Fibula and it healed remarkably quick. I just cant remember what they had her on. On Tues it's road trip time. Still havn';t figured it out yet where will go but the loose plan is to drive up to Big Sur and stay on the beach, then head over to the Redwoods. It's been very difficult for me to plan a non-active vacation. We originally had this time slot taking us to Yosemite to hike 5 days worth of the John Muir trail. It's unlikely that I will be doing much hiking. I defenitly feel willing. But Milagros it is a horrible idea, so I will listen. Good luck training everyone! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - The common adage is "no news is good news", but in this case -- your case, apropos the foot -- I began to think it was working the opposite; sadly, my hunch was right. I think your IMAZ training will end up being okay, but the worst part is the altered road trip plans. Yosemite and the Muir Trail* would've been terrific, but as you are thinking, there won't be (or probably shouldn't be) much hiking. So, as an alternative plan, taking the gentler regions of Big Sur and the redwoods sounds wise. Nine weeks clomping in a boot, with three down; okay, you're getting there! I had a 3-month break from running with my tibial stress fracture in '00, and longer with the torn meniscus in '06......and your situation will also pass, Neil! I'm sure I'm repeating myself here, but in '00 that episode marked the conception and germination of me as a triathlete, and in '06 I whiled away the time with aquabikes; are there any of those for you in July and August? And in '06 and also in '03, when I had a hairline fracture of the tibia, I spent no small amount of time water-running. Yeah, i'm sure I mentioned this about a month ago, but if I didn't and you think you might be interested in that, let me know and I will tell you how it works -- both physically and psychologically! * A long-standing dream, but maybe at this stage of my life never to be realized. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright, so... I'm starting to get nervous and I have about a thousand questions/thoughts that I need to share - particularly with Lisa and Steve since you two have done this race before ![]() Where to start? 1) So, the new bike fit is fabulous with ONE exception - Coach Ken shortened my aerobars so much that I can't fit that aerobottle in there anymore! I love that thing! It made it so easy for me to drink, and we have a pretty hot forecast for Sunday. I'm worried that if I don't find a replacement, I won't drink as much as I need and I'll have major problems on the run. I was thinking about ordering something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Inviscid-Design-SF-0000-03-Speedfil/dp/B002JLP2Q0 but it's expensive and I don't know if I want to be trying new things this close to the race? What do you guys think? Part of the reason I saw such huge improvements at Bassman and Devilman was the ability to drink easily and consistently. The aerobottle was a huge factor in those improvements. Not sure what to do! 2) After hearing about Lisa's flat last week, I made it my mission to practice flat-fixing a few times before the race. I've never gotten a flat out on the road, but there is a first time for everything. I also got new tires last week - Coach Ken recommended them because apparently my rear tire was pretty worn down (he thought it was too much trainer time, haha which I am certainly guilty of). So, on Friday evening I put the new tires on, and practiced switching tubes and using the CO2 cartridge. Very helpful to have practiced - I feel much more confident now. BUT - I don't know that I got the rear wheel back on correctly. I might have messed something up with the rear derailleur? I went for my ride yesterday and I could barely stay in the big chainring - it was so difficult to pedal. That isn't normal, obviously. When it's flat, I'm nearly always in my big ring, and I certainly expect to be in the big ring for most of Eagleman. Also, my chain was skipping a lot. So, I think I messed something up ![]() ![]() 3) Thanks for the heads up on the water temperature, Lisa! Any updates on what it is right now? I went to an OWS clinic hosted by my tri club yesterday, and the water in the lake we were in was soooo warm. I used my wetsuit for half, and then took it off for the second half. I wanted to know what it would feel like to be swimming in a churning mass of people without my protective armor (wetsuit ![]() Also, do we know if there are jellyfish this year? I imagine there must be if it is so warm. If there are jellyfish, I might wear my wetsuit no matter what. My reading of the rules says that AG athletes can wear their wetsuits if the temp is under 84, just that they won't be eligible for prizes or awards? I definitely won't be winning any prizes or awards anyway, so it's more about comfort and ease for me. Wearing a wetsuit if the temp is over 78 would probably roast me, but I hate jellyfish! eeks |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As for logistics, when will you be heading out, Lisa? Where are you staying? Mark and I will be camping at the high school - which I'm pretty excited about, actually. Camping should be fun? Something different! Mark is going to a friends bachelor party in AC on Friday night. I'm thinking of driving down after work on Friday and setting up camp on my own. That way, I can have all day Saturday to get things done and organized, and not worry about having to pick Mark up in AC, when he might be sleeping or whatever. He'll drive himself down later in the day. The only problem is that this would leave us with two cars - and I'm not too sure how up to driving I'll be Sunday evening? If we do this, I might try to find a place to stay another night, then drive back up on Monday morning. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Also, the wave schedule is out - I bolded our waves (I forget whether Ryan is 30-34 or 35-39?)
I'm not too happy about being in the last wave! This means that I'll be out of the water and on the bike by 9:15. I'm going to estimate that I'll then be off the bike by 12:30-12:45. Which means I'll be running in the HOTTEST part of the day. Yuck. Almost makes me wish I was racing Athena? I don't quite qualify, but I'm close! (They do 150, and I hover between 140 and 145 right now) Haha... On the bright side, I won't be run over by crazy 20-24 and 25-29 Men once on the bike. It'll be me, the blackwater, the wind and the heat... |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() And now, my first time HIM questions: Is there anything I should be doing this week? I'm planning on really focusing on catching up on sleep. I spend most of my time semi-sleep deprived, haha, and that won't help me going into a long, hot race. What should I be eating? Making sure I drink? I know its not just about 'carbo-loading' on Saturday- just not sure when/where my focus needs to be. Any things I need to bring or be aware of for Eagleman in particular? |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Update: I think I've jury rigged my aerobottle so that it will stay in. I had to use extra rubber-bands, and cut the straw, and it looks like its much closer to the wheel than before, but I think it will be ok. I'll try to ride with it this week. So, that relieves that problem. Hopefully. |

![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - As with your flurry of posts, I will take a few to address your questions as well. That's assuming I can't remember everything you brought up --- which is a very valid assumption (reflecting more my memory than your questions!) For the bike concerns, I was going to say to get it to your LBS to work on the gearing and aero bottle issues. But if you have the latter fixed, then that eliminates that problem. Just make sure it actually works for you, especially if you have grown to love and cherish it. I cannot imagine doing a half-iron without my aero bottle, as it also serves for extra storage and garbage disposal (gel packs in for storage, and returned empty after use) -- not to mention the go-to water supply. And for a HIM, that's where my water is; the two behind my seat will be for "special" drinks, and for HIM that's HEED in one and Perpetuem in the other. Do you think the gear/drerailleur problem is fixed? I understand how sometimes it can get re-routed in putting the back wheel on again, and without seeing it, all I can advise is to make sure that the chain is on both of the whirligig things of the derailleur. if you have any doubts, get it to your LBS, or arrive early at Eagleman and avail yourself of the bike support at packet pick-up. Onward! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS again - Lisa is a more recent vet of Eagleman, but I don't think anything at all has cahnged with it since I was last there in '04. For me, the most serious "wild card" of the race is the run. Much of it leaves you exposed to the sky, so if it's a hot day with bright sun, that can be tough. '03 was about 85% nasty that way, but '04 was cooler and overcast. And being open, it can be a wind tunnel --- and I'm thinking about the long stretch that is maybe between miles 4 and 9; can't remember the name of the road! Given the forecast, don't skip any part of any aid stations, and walk through if you have to. I remember lots of sponges there, so pick one or two up whenever they are available, and just secure hem under whatever part of your clothing will hold them. Do extra dousings with water! I take it as a given that the winds will be present on the bike, but the two times I did it they weren't bad -- at least not legendarily so. Still, brace yourself for that, just in case. The sprayer/shower thingy right after the swim is refreshing, and slowing your run into T1 just a bit might be worth it in order to get some of the saltiness off your skin. Your plan to drive down on Friday is excellent, and that will do a lot to allow to carry on through Saturday in as stress-free of a state as is possible. And try to stockpile sleep as much as you can during the week, and then hope for a solid sleep Friday night -- more important than a solid sleep the night before. ("...a solid sleep the night before...." --- that's virtually an oxymoron!) The two years I did Eagleman I drove straight back after, and it was tough -- even though those were in my "road warrior" days when I felt I could drive anywhere at any tim. Gee, that's sort of like you, isn't it, Jess? But life will be much easier for you if you can swing staying over another night, and if not right there then soemwhere between Cambridge and home. Onward! Edited by stevebradley 2010-06-06 6:55 PM |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS once more - That's the horns of dilemma -- to wear of not sear a full wetsuit on a hot day at Eagleman. I would PROBABLY not do it if it was over the limit of 78 degrees, just so as to avoid physiological disaster later in the race. On the other hand, with enough of a head's-up I would plan my bike and run nutrition to optimizing things to help me stave off disaster, but there is no guarantee of that, either. (As there is no ceratinty that wearing a wetsuit during the swim will lead to disaster from a "melt-down", be it figurative or literal.) If your over-riding concern is Jellyfish, then I would look to using a commercial anti-jellyfish product (I think there is one?), or slathering on BodyGlide or Vaseline. Tough call on that! As for your wave start, well, it IS good to avoid having the hammer-headed hounds roaring past you! A slightly earlier wave might be good, but after the 7th or 8th wave the differences later on in terms of ambient temps wil likley only amount to a degree, amybe two at the most. The bike marshals will have their hands full monitoring drafting when the 657 men from waves 5 and 6 get out on the course. Mercy! That's the real Stud Brigade there, in those two waves! Testosterone running wild! Too bad the marshals aren't given $10 or so for every drafting or blocking penalty they assign, as they could all retire at the end of the race and live the rest of their lives in luxury! Ryan, by the way, will be one of the 305 red caps of wave 6....and Lis gets to try and swim him down! (She had a strong swim at Columbia, but Ryan's was superb!) Onwards? (I might be done for now.) Oh! Nutrition during the week and into a pre-race breakfast -- do you have a plan and/or feel it's all under control? |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey jess, i, like steve, knew i would have trouble remember to respond to everything, so i made a list 1.) water bottle: I guess without seeing it, it's hard for me to understand how your aero bottle won't fit, but i'll take your word for it. is there anyway you can ask your bike fit guy to see if he can make adjustments that allow you to keep it without sacrificing fit? will a torpedo bottle fit? http://www.nytro.com/index.cfm/product/?ProductID=4541 this goes between your aerobars and holds a regular water bottle. if not, how about a rear of the seat set-up? http://www.nytro.com/index.cfm/product/?ProductID=98. i have an aerobottle and a rear of the seat thingy, so i can roll with an aero bottle and 2 regular bottles. definitely get this worked out. i agree, it is the #1 thing that is going to lead to a strong race. you HAVE to have something that you will drink with. 2.) great job practicing the flat. this is another that it's hard to help with without seeing your bike, but if you can't take it to a shop before, there will be a bike shop at the expo on friday and saturday. there always is. they will take a look at it for free and do some tune ups on it if need be. 3.) water temp/jellies: on the bt race talk thread for eman someone posted that the national weather service said the bay temp was 78 degrees as of today. technically speaking, usat calls for no wetsuits above 78 degrees if you want to qualify for awards. vigo usually jokes that he 'drops a bag of ice' near the thermometer on race morning so he likely does have some wiggle room. i'm not sure how much, though. if they announce it's over 78 degrees, i will not be wearing a suit. if it is under, i will likely be wearing a full sleeved suit. last year, the jellies were out in force. i wore a sleeveless suit and slathered my face and arms with vaseline. mindy had actually done some google searching for me after i made a panicked post here and found the vaseline tid-bid. i don't know if it was that, but i had NO ISSUES with the jellies at all last year. i felt them, but they did not hurt at all. it just felt like i was brushing up against seaweed. no burning. no stinging. as a cautionary measure, i found out later that vaseline is bad for neoprene. so, if i wear a suit, i will not be putting vaseline on myself (since my new wetsuit goes for $800). another word of caution, if you do use vaseline, MAKE SURE you keep it away from your goggles. that was a near-debacle for me last year. vaseline will not rinse off your goggles in the water, and you will not be able to see out of them. one more word of caution, if you do use vaseline, DO NOT PUT IT ON YOUR FACE where your goggles will hit as your goggles will not seal after this....a further debacle from last year. please feel free to read my race report from last year. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=164165 . as of today, i have heard no confirmed reports that jellies are in cambridge yet. i have heard that they are in annapolis. keep your fingers crossed. if it is a non-wetsuit swim AND there are jellies, i will be slathered in vaseline. since you are getting in town early, you can always swim friday and saturday to calm the nerves and get used to the conditions. 4.) logistics: ryan and i are heading down pretty early in the day on friday and are staying until sunday at the cambridge holiday inn express. we will be heading to the expo/packet pick-up friday. on saturday AM, i'm planning on taking a 30 min easy ride followed by a 15 min easy run. if you would like to join me, let me know. my cell is 703.371.1540. my email is [email protected]. i will be accessible both ways. 5.) waves. that sucks about your wave. period. that is a change from last year. i went off much early as 25-29 wave. all you can do now is just mentally prepare for the reality. you are going of last. it sucks. it is going to be hot. it is what it is. you will do fine in the heat. it is no big deal. the high is only calling for 89 degrees. it could be and has been MUCH worse. you will be fine. say it and believe it. prep that all week. 6.) what to do this week? drink drink and drink. hydrate. eat clean. no junk. get to bed early everyday. get salt in your diet. salt your food. 7.) items to bring that are eman specific: vaseline! last year i accidentally bought baby powder scent, but i smelled lovely all day that's all i have for you now. let me know if you have other questions. you're going to do awesome! |
