uhcoog - 2010-12-19 10:12 PM 13.33 mile run in a little under 2 hours.  Not bad considering I'd never run over 3 miles until August of this year.

Nice!

Ok, I'm pulling the trigger and I'm going to post.  My name is Laurie, I'm 38 and a single mom of 2 little kids.  I started racing just this summer and did a try-a-tri and a sprint.  I was a competitive swimmer (synchro & speed) for years so that's my strength and I really struggle with running so I'm opposite of pretty much everyone else in the sport it seems.  LOL.  I've been toying with the HIM idea for a while but it's daunting.  I've chosen one for Sept but haven't had the guts to register yet.  It's a totally flat course which makes me feel less scared of that big, long run at the end.  I joked to my neighbour that it'd be really beneficial if the order was reversed to run, bike, swim but he pointed out that there could be a lot of drownings that way.   Anyway, my biggest thing is going to be training my running endurance.  Can you tell I'm nervous about this run?  Oy.

It's normal to feel totally terrified, right?

Laurie -

Congrats on doing your first 2 tri's. I just did 2 this past summer as well and that got me hooked. Regarding the run, I am not sure what other people's experience is but mine should be a bit comforting. Back in June 2010, I could hardly run a mile, I was so out of shape at about 6'1'' 250lbs. But in about a month and a half of really working at not only running, but biking and swimming as well. I was able to do my 2 sprint tri's without much of a problem. I then flaked off because of my wedding and honeymoon in October. Since I got back, I started to train more again, I went from being able to run 3-4 miles to being able to complete a half-mary without too much difficulty. And that is only in about a month and a half of training.

I think you will find that doing the plan keeps you on target and before you know it you are able to complete the distances you have set out to complete. I would be confident that by September you should have no problems completing the triathlon. I would just caution you to not go out to far or fast at the start. Take it slow and before you know it, you will be able to run for a long long time.

Good luck! Which tri were you thinking of doing?

Off for a 2000m swim!

Laurie- You sound like you're in the right place and it's completely normal to feel this way.  I'd just try to keep a focus on finishing and not put way too much external pressure on yourself.  Truthfully, I think you are not in a bad place at all.  I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I could swim than run.  I go to the pool and can not swim a continuous mile, I have to rest every couple hundred meters for sure. The worst that happens is that you walk some of the 13.1 miles, I can't just drown! I'm a land mammal dammit!  Seriously, though, you will be completely fine and have a lot of time.  Makes me worried about how bad my swimming is and how close my HIM is (april 17)

akrenik - 2010-12-18 11:01 PM Got a crappy 12 mile run in today.  Legs felt heavy. Hips and knees hurt.  Just an overall lousy and slow run.  It was a bummer because all of my long runs have been feeling great.  I guess we will have those bad ones from time to time.  The one thing my run made me realize is that I DONT want to skimp on my training over the next 16 weeks.  I want to do every thing I can so that I can ENJOY the whole experience on race day.

Keep up the training everyone!!

We DEFINITELY all have those runs from time to time.  Looking on the bright side you got 12 miles of running in, and not that many can say that often.  Are you doing HIM Oceanside

Yep.  Seemed like so far away when I signed up, but now days are flying by.  Yikes!

Kudos for still getting in the 12 miles with the ailments. Someone else would have probably just tried to tack on the run to another workout later in the week, and then they get behind.

For instance, that's what I did for my first bike of the week. It has been storming here pretty good. In CA, that just means a lot of rain, nothing major. But I tried to get on the trainer and plug out 1hr 30min on the bike. It just wasn't happening. I even had football going and just get way to bored on the trainer. It seems like every minute is just agony. Does anyone have any suggestions to stay on it longer, rather than HTFU?

I don't think it would be too bad, but my hands start to hurt after about 15 minutes. I change up my position on the bike from time to time, but when I wrap my thumb and fingers around the shifters, they get really sore. I assume this is the correct way to ride a road bike. Does this occur to anyone else? Does it just get better with time?

Also, my trainer has been doing a heavy load on my back tire. I got a new tire that I read should last longer when using it on a trainer. Instead of swapping the tires out between trainer and road, is there any drawback to having a different tire on the front and back of the bike? I wouldn't think so, but thought I'd ask to make sure.

Since starting this plan I have seen my swim and run improve considerably, but my bike is lacking. When I look back at my logs I can see why, I seem to never get my bike time in. I'll try to correct going ahead from this week on.

I am with you!  I needed to get  1 1/2 in on the bike yesterday, but this rain is blowing it!  I could only pull off 45 min on the trainer.  Doesn't matter if I have a movie on or football on or anything.  I just look over at the clock like every two minutes.  Now since it is still pouring it looks like I will be on the trainer again tonight.    I think I might go to the gym and try a spin class.  I bet that will make the time go quicker. Hmmm

Hi Laurie! Thank you for joining us! Yes, it's totally normal to be terrified! That's what makes triathlon so awesome - it scares the tar out of you!
Lots of people will be jealous of your swim background. Lots of great triathletes come from a swimming background...it takes a lot of toughness to be on a swim squad!

Trainer Rides: You have to think of them like swim workouts. You don't just get on a and ride. That is SO boring! Break it up into segments, with no part being longer than 15 minutes. For example:
10 minutes easy spin warmup
5 minutes as 30 seconds hard, 30 seconds easy
5 minutes as moderate pace
5x2 minutes at race pace with 5 minutes easy spinning between
10 minutes cool down

Starting to train for my 4th Half Ironman - well actually my 5th, though I didn't actually get to race my 4th due to getting sick :-(  I've signed up for Rev3 half in Knoxville on 5/15 - anyone else out there doing this one?  This time I'm starting in more of a hole than normal with my training - I haven't been training much for the past couple of years and have gotten fat and out of shape.  So I have a couple of concerns with my training for this race: 1. my current out of shape status (though I've been getting ready for the past month to start the plan on 12/26) - the training plan should take care of this!; 2. my tendency to get sick right before races (it's happened at the last 2 half-ironman races - once a stomach virus and the last one a sinus infection and bronchitis).  Any thoughts on this?  I'll keep you guys up to date!

I feel you! Spin class has been helpful for me but its still REALLY hard to go longer than an hour...

Hi All, I’m rather new to Tri. Several Sprints and one Oly under my belt so far. I’m a BOP finisher.

I need some advice. I’m thinking of doing my first 70.3 I was looking at the Racine 70.3, but I’m already registered for the Chattanooga Oly distance the weekend before.  It is totally craze to attempt that 70.3? Could I go ez in  Chattanooga and use that as a warm-up?

I also thought about the Lake Geneva 70.3 on Sept 11. But I don’t know anything about how popular or organized it is. Any info?

My other option is to do Branson. But frankly the hills down there scare me. And I’d have to pass on the Chicago Marathon.

I’ll be doing the Trinona as a Oly earlier in the year.

ANY advice you all have will be much appreciated.

Thanks! Don

I don't think an Oly the week before is crazy given you approach it correctly.  By that I mean don't go all out and treat it as a long training session, actually your last before tapering.

Completely agree with TTMA about the trainer.  In addition, I find that counting down is a lot better than counting up.  If you can start a timer at 60 instead of stopwatch/clock, I think that's helpful

Hello!
I am new to this site.

Anyone training for a Half this coming year?  Tips for a detailed training plan?
I have run a few sprints and Olys. This past year, I qualified for age group nationals.  Looking to do a half this coming year and possible a full.

Any suggestions or advice is greatly accepted!
