Well just finished work for the week and now two whole days off. And I've got a lot of training planned! And I've somehow gotten roped into writing a play for church so that's probably what I'll be thinking about when working out this week. You know it's kind of funny... I love music when I run and even when I bike if conditions permit, but when I swim...it's like it is my time. I know they make waterproof cases for my iPod, but I have absolutely no desire to get one.

Speaking of swimming, I've completely struck out trying to find a swim coach in the local area.  The folks at the pool said I could ask them for pointers if they weren't busy - but didn't really seem to keen on the idea. So I guess once a month or so I drive to the valley and get lessons. Maybe I can hook up with some of the tri clubs and hit a masters swim class and a ride or run while I'm at it.

Well I think I'm the only west coaster on here so you all are probably asleep already so see you tomorrow!

This is my "fallback" week, which had me for a 1.6 mile run that I completely skipped.  Today I'm trying to squeeze in a 700yd swim and spin class. This might be another brick.

So now that I know what a brick is, and have the day off, I did my first one this morning.  But of course I had to change it up a bit.  I did 1.5 on the bike, .5 run, 1.5 bike and .5 run.  Let's see how the ole legs feel tomorrow.Laughing

The next two weeks will be concentrating on finishing up the couch to 5k program and then I am starting the original sprint.  I plan on entering my 1st sprint in July.  Any suggestions are welcomed by all.

Deb - I believe your body has enough carbohydrates avaialble to last about 1 hour.  After that you need get something in your system.  There are some good calculators that can give you an idea of what you need - check out htis one:

http://tri-talk.com/TriTalkNC/TriTalkNC.htm

If you have a hard time keeping solids down while you workout then definitely look into a good sports drink.  I use Gatorade Endurance, mostly because it is the most common found at races.  It can take some getting used to but 8oz. is about 50 calories.  If i were you I would find out what type of drink is offered at the race you are doing and then practice with it.
and
As far as race morning nutrition everyone is differnt has their own techniques.  Just try different combinations out until you find something that works.  I do the same thing every race - I set my alarm about 3-4 hours before race and I eat a bagel, apple, orange and sip 16 oz. Gatorade endurance.  Then I usually drink about 8 oz. Gatorade Endurance 15-20 minutes before the race.  But like I said everyone has different approaches.  Just make sure you do something because you will turn that 2:20 race into 3:00 if you eat or drink nothing.

I think I was more concerned because I usually eat nothing at all before a workout. No breakfast / bagels / coffee (tea) etc. I wasn't sure what the normal recommendation for replacing calories on a HM was. Nutrition isn't exactly my strong point but obviously I want to try and run a little faster than usual in a race so need something??

I guess over the next couple of long runs I will try a few different things and figure it out for myself Undecided

So I got my 11 miler in this weekend and am really starting to reconsider this spring marathon training during the winter-haha.  It was 6 degrees and I was out there for almost 2 hours.  My water/sports drink bottles froze at about mile 8 and I could barely get a few drops from each bottle.

An then to top it off I promised I would take my son ice fishing so after my run I went and sat on ice for 2 hours.

Only because the medical systems in WI will be so over-laden with patients that the cheeseheads in Racine, etc. will be making their way south.  BEAR in mind too that the game is at Soldier Field, so I imagine a rash of (cheese) head cases will crop up along the lake shore.

Hi Everyone, Happy MLK day
Sorry to keep disappearing. Looks like you all are going great.
I forgot to log on Thursday but Friday had a crunch day getting docs together for a possible job. Ended up taking all day. Saturday was that same but for and artist residency opp this summer, so I had to set up photo studio and take pics up newest art work etc, and get app out before 5pm. LOL definately an all day event. Sunday was St. Louis for payday shopping and errands.
sooo.......

I'm working on getting a schedule that I can maintain.
Mornings: 30 min yoga, pilates and strength.
30 min run on ride. ( the run is time is set because I'm doing the C25K (16wk) but the ride varies for 20 to 45)
In addition every other day I have a swim, probably MWF because getting to the gym is hard to do on the weekends.
After the 24th I will be adding an additional 20 min of free weights to my swim days.

My gym trips ( at least until I have a job that says otherwise will be mornings at 10:30am (lap swim at the pool)
I'm hoping I can keep this consistent. Although I am not a morning person, I find easier to structure my mornings and harder to have interruptions and excuses. Besides, once the house quiets down at night I don't really like to leave. Maybe this will change but for now mornings it is!

Two more things
GO BEARS!!!
and does anyone know of a brand of protien powders that are both gluten free and dairy free

Blessings to all and stay warm
marys

Erin that stinks there is no swim instructors around, but your better off going to someone that is good than getting advice from so/so coaching.  Enjoy your 2 days off!!!

Rob don't worry too much about missing your run, just focus on the future workouts and try to nail them. Have fun in the pool and spinning.

Court that is a great workout, I do a similar workout when Im in shape do sets of 8-10mile hard on bike then run 2 miles & repeat 4 to 6 times.  Fun workout because it breaks everything up plus work on faster transitions.

Tim great advice on prerace meal.  I double that amount of food for an IM and it is so hard to eat at 3AM when your not even hungry.  I do put PBJ on my bagel for some flavor and more protein.  I can not imagine training for a long race in the winter living in the midwest.  Did you guys catch anything (besides colds)??

Scott I am a big Rogers fan, so I'm pulling for the Packers too.

That is an EXCELLENT idea!  It would have to be on the honor system and would have to be geared towards every particpant's fitness level.

I think it should at least be a brick of some sort.

Who's up for it?

I have no skin in the game but I will go on the packers side:

I would say the workout must really push you (probably shouldn't be a long run for injury purposes)

IE full bike distance of your A race and full swim of that race.

So, I could go two routes on this one.  I have an Oly that I'm registered for and I am about to pull the trigger on Steelhead HIM for August.  That would be my 2 A races this year.

I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'm willing to "bet" the HIM swim/bike brick.  THIS WILL BE FUN!

You mean I would have to do 112 miles on the bike and a 2.4 mile swim? I love the Packers...but I'm not crazy   Middle of winter, wouldn't fit the training program..not to mention the coach wouldn't agree.  It should be level..not fair for some to do HIM, others Full, others sprint.  I think it should be something we all can do, but won't necessarily, and that fit into a training program...like an extra hour of PT and weights.

How about a core workout for 7 days straight.  I suggest that Around The World routine.  While it would suck everyone could benefit from that.

OK - does that fact that I am a lions fan matter at all? I think I should get to sit this one out based on the fact that all of you should feel sorry for me LOL.

But - If I have to - PACKERS Smile

Back in the pool with my coach today Smile. It has been since just before Christmas so I was anxious for some feedback on all the individual stuff I have been working on. She felt like I have made some great progress and I am gaining for confidence. I have a long way to go but I felt good about it and know I just keep getting in there and working on it.

Bike ride was nice - decent cadence and a good short sweat.

Curling tonight.

Also, today was the first official day of my 22 weeks to a sprint plan - I feel like I am about 5 weeks ahead of it except for the swimming but I am happy I have a plan I can work with now and my goal is to stay way ahead of it.

Have a great night everyone.
