Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright? Who put in the request for the July/August heat in May??? I'm soooo not ready for this yet, and I even spent the week in FL. I guess it followed me back. Hope it doesn't affect anyone to badly this weekend racing on the East Coast. What's everyone got planned for the weekend? I got in a 5 mile run this morning was hoping for a 10K but the GI issue popped up so I made the final 1/2 mile into a sprint. Probably works out about the same? Tomorrow's plan is a brick of a 30 mile ride with a 10K. Then Monday will be another brick of my actual race course (17.5 mile ride, 3.4 mile run). After that I may try and hit up my pool on the way home. I'm very excited it opened this weekend, so I'll be able to start getting in outdoor swims to freeze my butt and get ready for open water. Next step will be to get in a lake or ocean swim. Reflecting on this weekend, and what I have set up for myself, I'm wondering what ever happened to sitting around, bar-b-queing, drinking beer and listening to every countdown on the radio that ends with "Stairway to Heaven"??? Funny how times change (especially when you're trying to not be fat and lazy!) -Matt |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone. Hope you all are having a good weekend. Matt-that is some serious training for the weekend. And to answer what happened to "good ol' days"? There's no reason not to do both right? Train hard, then have the bbq. Had a good swim in the morning, ride in the afternoon with Nicole, and a run this evening. 1.5 hours of riding for me tomorrow. Gorgeous weather is finally here! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning all!! A solid week of training is in the books! My runs were a little shorter than usual but trying to get my legs back w/o straining something. May's training has been plagued with injuries so I am excited to get a full week under my belt and feel good!I got in 25 mile rides, 2 2000yd swims, and 2 runs- 2 and 3 miler. Total of 58 miles and change this week. I'll be back up to 4 and 5 milers this week. I am new to training and have not had a lot of experience running/riding in high heat. Yesterday was around 87 degrees (around 6pm) and I did 3.1 miles at about 9 min each. That is slow for me and I don't know why it happened. Do we move that much slower in high temps? I felt my bike ride was a little slower than usual on Friday also. It was almost 90 degrees. I need to read a little about how heat affects exercise. I keep try to include some weights and cannot bring myself to do it. I don't know why. I am going to make a VERY big effort in June to include this. I want to do 15 minutes a day. I am also going to go on AT LEAST one short run a week with my son pushing his jogging stroller. I need you all to hold me accountable. Matt, you need to keep drinkin' cold beer and having cookouts. Don't let this sport take that away from you or you'll get frustrated. Lots of people get consumed with what they consume- don't do it. Make it fun. Just keep thinking- I tri to eat what I want! I eat whatever I want but I have learned not to stuff myself with 2-3 helpings. I hope everyone has a great day. I try to reserve Sundays for rest and body healing. I will lounge in the pool today and drink a few beers. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Burgers and beverages this afternoon for sure! I have earned it. Had ice cream yesterday but it was purchased from an 11 year old blind boy who is training with me on a tandam to do a team tri this summer. So I ate two scoops of mint chocolate chip. Good workout day - did an open water swim yesterday in the ocean and wow - different than the lake. Thus, I went back today for another two runs on next weeks 1/3 mile course. It was great to see 8 or so others also practicing in the ocean. Had a big wave hit me and drank some salt water....yuck but I recoverred quickly so feel as if I am getting more comfortable in the open water! Also did a brick - 16 mile ride with the last 3 at race pace and then a 3 mile run with the first two at race pace. Enjoy!!!

Just keep thinking- I tri to eat what I want! I eat whatever I want but I have learned not to stuff myself with 2-3 helpings. Ok. With all due respect to Ashley, I have to comment on that because I am probably one of those people. I think it's ok to eat what you want if what you want is good healthy fuel for you but if what you want is chicken wings and beer at every meal you might need to reconsider. I've always been a very fussy eater and never really learned to enjoy a lot of healthy foods. It has taken me years to get beyond that and even when I came up with a basically healthy configuration of food it wasn't until I started counting calories that I realized that I was making a few mistakes with portions. All it really took was a little bit of tweaking and I've lost about 25lbs since January. I still would like to lose 20-30 more so I will continue to count calories and make changes to my diet-not only for weight loss but to feel as healthy and energetic as I can. Please don't misunderstand my intention here. It's fine that you eat what you want and feel good enought to train. Maybe you actually like foods that your body can use optimally but I think it's a very individual thing and for me and possibly others here being one of those types of people works for me. I feel better, I train better and I'm getting faster. And did I mention I feel better? Sooooooooooooooooooo much better. I could repeat this 1,000,000 times for emphasis and still be underplaying it. That being said-I do struggle not to get overly type A about the whole thing because I don't want to develop an eating disorder. It really does take a lot to balance training and weightloss without becoming overly consumed byt the whole thing-so I agree with you there. Troy-Nice time! Looking forward to your RR. Jeff-Sounds like you got some awesome training in this weekend! What's on schedule for the holiday, everyone? I have to work and I think my pool (community center) will be closed so tomorrow is my track workout which for some reason I'm actually excited about. The more pain the better, right? Also on my goals for this week: Add more veggies to my diet. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Maybe I'm a little too energized. I could not get to sleep last night and now I'm dragging because I had to get up at 4:30. I might move my track workout to later this week so I can benefit as much as possible from it and do a short run tonight instead. Kind of a bummer. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning peeps! Popping in for a very quick race report. I haven't decided if I'll write a longer version or not. I think my lack of running over the past 3 weeks caught up with me. I was feeling great and on track for a sub 3:15 until about mile 19 when the wheels simply came off. I really tried to rally a number of times, but I just couldn't find any more. Legs were done. It was all I could do to make it in with a Boston Qualifier ... which I did with 37 seconds to spare. We'll see if that's good enough to get me in or not, but with the raised standards this year, I'm pretty confident. I hurt today ... considering going into work just so I can have the support bars on either side of the toilet. As it always is on this weekend (my hometown race remains my favorite), the post-race cook-out was a blast with some great friends. I didn't drink enough, though, so beer is definitely on the menu today. ETA: Finish time was 3:24:23 ... I know I have better than that in me. Edited by BernardDogs 2012-05-28 7:25 AM |

You know you're pretty good when your BQ time disappoints you. If you could PR every race it would be no big deal. I have no doubt you'll hit your goal on the next one. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nicole, your opinion is always welcomed. I will always offer the eat what you want opinion. It's an opinion, take it or leave it. Troy, way to go buddy! I know you didn't set a PR but that is still solid! I hope you make it to Boston. A full marathon is an amazing accomplishment. I hope to one day tackle a few on my way to Kona. I set a PR this morning in the Chick-fil-a Spicy 5K race- 25:28 pushing a jogging stroller! I was happy with that. I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day. Take a moment to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It's not just a day to cookout and drink. Thank veterans as well.

I work at the VA so that one is easy for me. Thanks for welcoming my thoughts. I don't want to slam anyone's opinions here (I love our little group!) but just wanted to present a counterpoint. It doesn't even have to be an opinion. I think everyone has to find a formula that works for them, that's all. My approach is different than yours now but it may not always be. It's just what I need to do for myself at this point in time. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay. So I think I have a problem. I sold my garmin 310xt which was just hanging out on my bike as a power/cycling computer. I have the 910xt. (It was a present from my students; I didn't actually buy it myself.) I love it, but there is word that it is having mechanical failures when you put it on a quick release system. So what do I do you ask?........I ordered a garmin Edge 500 for my bike. I figured with the money from the 310xt sale and some rewards points I have, I only ended up paying $50 for an incredible piece of equipment.(That is the sound of justification) I think I have a problem...I should have saved for race wheels. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Isn't your 910xt under warranty? Take it back and say it failed and you'll have more money. Say you're not happy and put the money towards an edge. |

Halfway through your post I was going to text you and say no problem-pretty sure the check will bounce anyway-then I read the rest. Oh well, guess I'm in. So, instead of an easy run last night, I went to bed early. I can't workout on 4 hours of sleep. I don't even care if that makes me a wimp. I'm an 8 hour kind of girl and I know my limits. Anyway, I can double up workouts either tomorrow or (more likely) Saturday. Have a great day, everyone! |

Say you're not happy and put the money towards an edge. Yeah, my rant was really tongue-in-cheek. I think that the 910xt issue will be fixed with a firmware update. It was all just an excuse to get a better dedicated cycling computer. The 500, from what I understand, is better at tracking power. Anyway, I'm excited about the new purchase and will have to wait a bit longer for those wheels. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning all ... Feeling better today than I was yesterday. I'm still not sure what happened on Sunday, but it carried over to yesterday with a more painful recovery than what is normal for me after a marathon. I have to think the extreme taper I took with the ankle injury left me with enough fitness loss to really shut things down for those final 6 miles. I spent the day pretty much on the couch just trying to massage the muscle soreness out a bit. Normally, I like to be a bit active on the day following a race, but it just wasn't happening yesterday. Today, I'm feeling better, and I'll hit the pool after work for some easy yardage. I'm hoping my coach agrees that easy yardage is best. And I'm officially excited for my first Sprint at the end of June!! It feels like I can step away from marathon training now and really focus on all three disciplines. Onward!!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just joined team Red White and Blue! It's a charity that raises money to help wounded vets reintegrate into society. I have some experience with the difficulties they face both personally (loved ones) and professionally. I've been looking for a local (as opposed to overseas) charity but I was worried a time commitment might interfere with training. This allows me to use my races as a fundraising event so I don't have to worry about making a commitment I can't keep. So excited!!! No cool swag but I will buy some team gear to raise awareness and so I can look cooler at races (when I'm finishing last). |
