Expert 745 Bethesda, MD/Northern NJ | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Had a crazy week. The Judge's secretary was on vacation, so I was playing secretary and law clerk all week. Barely stopped moving. Add into that birthday celebrations (I can now rent a car!) and I am completely and utterly exhausted. Had to get up early this morning to be in the city with Eli by 8 for Packet pickup for the IAMS DOGGY DASH!! I am excited. It was soooo tough getting up and leaving the house early though. Eli passed the first vet check, and we checked out the competition I think there were generally two groups of competitors - those who are crazy dog people - who are doing this because they think it would be a fun event to do with their dog. And then those who are actual runners just bringing their dog along for the ride. I think I fit more into the second category I don't think I've trained Eli as well as I should have - he can certainly run 5 miles, but probably only at a 9 min/mile pace. I think the 'winners' will be doing 7:30ish. I might have to seriously train him so we can go back and really compete next year - the top three places get these ridiculously awesome red fire hydrants, haha. Anyway, race starts tomorrow at 8 am. Apparently they'll start us right after the Pro and Elite men pass mile 1 on the run course. I am excited! Edited to add: I think I might try to do the NYC Tri next year. I got the NYC tri goody bag (and there was a special Doggy Dash goody bag for Eli) and it was pretty good. Edited by ThatGirl 2010-07-17 6:33 PM |

Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL ...if you guys haven't gone to jess' facebook page, there is the cutest picture of eli post doggy dash. so cute. i didn't think i would want another doggy addition to our family for a while, but i'm finding my grieving for belle has come to a halt. i don't cry a lot any more, but it's really just a sense of emptyiness....it's the only way i can describe it. i feel like the piece of me that gets joy from having a dog around, just isn't getting fed. i had (what i thought to be) a brilliant idea of looking for a new dog after imloo and naming her looloo. ryan isn't too keen on the idea. he really doesn't want to get another until we're out of our condo. my feeling is that belle had a great life and got plenty of exercise regardless of where i lived....and the alternative is that she would have been euthanized in a shelter. we'll see how it plays out. there is a part of me, though, that almost feels like getting another would be betraying her. ...actually getting emotional writing this. it's crazy what those little fuzzy faces do to your heart. |

Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL stevebradley - 2010-07-17 7:10 PM LISA - Root around in your closet and find your Inspector Albrecht hat -- you know, the one you wore when you figured out who Joe O'Gorman was! Only this time, use it to figure out if ANY of the Fexy folk at Placid are "capable" of swimming 2.4 miles in around 85 minutes. I know the guideline says 80 minutes, but in the case of you and Ryan I strongly suspect more like 65-75 minutes, tops. I don't mind being the last one out of the water, but I don't want it to be last by too much. Both of my irons featured swims that were 1:25 or 1:26. Yech. I guess you've heard about the buoy line underwater at the IMLP swim course? If not, the course is the world's skinniest rectangle, going waaaaay out, and then across for about 20 feet is all, and then waaaaaaay back in. But anchoring those buoys is a continuous underwater rope, which is magificent for sighting for people who swim close to it; it's a real incentive for staying right close to the buoys! (And still, my IMLP swim was only 1:25! ) When do you figure the swim will start? And the pm run? (This is for Thursday, BTW.)
hey steve, while the schedule might look formal, we are not uptight about it at all. a few of the people in the house are putting together a scheduled agenda of start times for all this stuff. i've already told them i will not be following it. while i plan on getting training in, it's also a vacation for us. so, i guess what i'm saying is, anytime you want to start the swim, we'll start the swim. anytime you want to run, we'll run. when you want to go to the expo, we'll go to the expo. makes no difference to me. we'll just be happy to see you! if it takes you longer to finish the swim, then i'll swim more or be sunning myself. whatev. i have heard about the swim cable. i'm interested to see it. i'm not sure about the status of the internet in LP, and we are leaving tonight to head to pa and then tomorrow am to go the rest of the way, so your best bet is to call me on my cell 703.371.1540 or to email me at [email protected] i can pick those up easily from my phone. did you get the email i sent? is that the right address? if not, can you just send me a quick email so i have your email address? thanks!!! on the ankle front, i tried to run on friday and it did not go well at all. i didn't make it 5 steps before i got intense pain. i'm going to try it again tomorrow when i get to LP. if that doesn't go well, then i'll make an appt for an ortho when i get back. keeping my fingers crossed, but getting a little worried. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL YO! GANG! Are we alive? I sure hope so, although after six days of inactivity here I feel the Heimlich maneuver might be in order. What will follow are some updates: 1.) I visited Lake Placid on Thursday, and spent a few hours with Lisa. What had happened was that we took our planning talk over to the world of email, so that end of things was not carried here, "live", with the group. 2.) Even as I type, Lisa is out on the L.P. course - somewhere! - serving as a volunteer. 3.) She loves Lake Placid and vicinity, and wants to move there. Seriously. 4.) Tomorrow at about this time she will be in the volunteer's Preferred line, waiting to sign up for next year's IMLP! 5.) Her ankle is still bothering her, but hopefully now, after a few more days, it is fine. 6.) Her ankle, my back --- actually it is more buttock, and I think specifically the piriformis. But piriformis problems refer pain and ache up into the low-low back, and down into the leg. I have had hints of it before, but this is the worst bout. I haven't run or biked in a few days, will try one or both today. When my A.R.T. person gets back from LP herself in a day or two, she can probably fix it pretty quickly. I'm exactly between races now (2 weeks since last, 2 weeks til next), so this isn't too bad. For me it is mostly a presisitent ache, low-grade, but with hints of nerve issues -- the piriformis muscle, when inflamed, will often compress against the sciatic nerve. 7.) Lisa's Team Fexy house (actually, a gorgeous chalet) in Placid is gorgeous, and the dynamic there is quite intriguing. There are 17 in the house, and an indeterminate number of various hangers-on from the Reston area who are in Placid themselves and are spending time at the house. there are dogs, some of which run away and need massive Fexy search parties to track them down. I have told Lisa that this is prime materail for a reality TV series. That's it from here, i think! Edited by stevebradley 2010-07-25 7:36 AM |

I hope it's as nice there as it is here, and that you're having a great race! Any thoughts on Long Branch on the 14th? Any thoughts on Half Vermont? I signed up for it! Steve! I am alive I had a great race, I think Time was not as great as I wanted: 3:01. I was hoping to be in the 2:50's, at least beat 3:00. I missed that goal, in part because I stopped on the run course to help a runner that was going down. Leg by leg: Swim: not very good. Kind of disappointed with it actually - 33ish minutes. The way back in was difficult because the sun was in my face and I could NOT see where I was going. Frustrating! Oh well. T1: 2:44 - not bad. Passed a couple in my AG in transition I think... Bike: Another great bike!!! I am so excited with my bike progress lately. I did the 25.5 mile course in 1:24 - approximately 18.2 mph I've realized - I need about five miles before I start really hitting my groove. I was spinning along at 16-17ish for the first 5 miles, even though I was really trying... Then, all of a sudden my speed starting increasing with the same amount of effort. I don't think it was hills - the course was very flat. Just a matter of me getting warmed up I guess. T2: 2:43. Do I get an award for having nearly identical transition times? Run: 57:34 (9:17 average)- Hot! And this was a windy/annoying run course very similar to Bassman. Loop upon loop upon out and back I'll have to upload the Garmin info later to see how I fared on a mile by mile basis. I stopped for about 2 minutes at around mile 4 to help a guy who was about to collapse. Young guy (20ish male) was coming down the path a la Julie Moss - REALLY REALLY scary. One girl in my AG that I had been leap-frogging with started yelling at him to STOP and lay down (actually, at Bassman this spring I was 2 in the AG and this girl was 3 - I totally recognized her!). Another guy stopped and was physically holding the young guy down. I gave him my cold towel, and the other girl gave him some water. He was totally incoherent - he literally could not speak. He was mumbling something. I haven't been so scared for another person in a race. Eventually, I started running again, since two other people were staying with the guy and I figured the best course of action was to find and tell a volunteer so they could send an ambulance. The next person on the path I saw was a photographer, and he didn't have a walkie-talkie, so he called 911. I kept running - picked up the pace as much as I could until I reach the next water station to tell them what happened. The other girl in the AG stayed with the guy until the ambulance came - I talked with her after the race and she said it took a few minutes for the ambulance to get there, and that the EMT's thought he was showing signs of heat stroke. So so scary. Anyway, my final time was 3:01. I wasn't too pleased with the time, but it was a rough day out there - as reflected in my placement. I was 88 out of 299 women, and 15 out of 39 in the AG, both of which I am VERY pleased with. Top 1/3 of women is absolutely great for me Steve - Half Vermont then? I will sign up tonight!! |

Well, quick on that one -- the most reasonably-priced accoms seem to be in Rutland, which is about 40 minues from the race site. That is probably what I will do, figuring that driving in the early hours of a Sunday morning will be a bit quicker. I'll give you the anmes of a few places I have contacted that have pretty good rates. Nicely done at NJST, especially the bike!! More later! |

Veteran 481 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Jess, I think you can give yourself credit for beating 3:00. Your stop to help the runner in distress clearly added a little time, so you should deduct slightly when trying to compare against other performances and not penalize yourself for doing a good deed. I hope the runner was OK, clearly he needed assistance! I've had 2 weeks in a row of steady running, so I hope I am back to my routine and on track to do the 13.1 in October. We head back to the beach for the final summer trip next week, so I hope I don't backtrack too much. I'm also breaking in new shoes, which I don't seem to like very much right now. All in all, I'm happy that I'm starting to get my weekely mileage back where it needs to be (so I can seriously start training for th 13.1.) Hard to believe summer is almost over. Picked up the kids from camp this past weekend. Head to the beach for a week, and then when we get back, Fall softball starts back up again and school is not far behind. Summer seems too short these days. I am looking forward to getting some relief from the heat, but we are probably a couple of months away from that still. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL MINDY! You southerners! I keep forgetting that your summers are over about a month before ours, at least in terms of the kids heading back to school. I was just thinking yesterday that it's at about the halfway point of school-vacation, and then along comes your note about one last gasp of summer before school starts again. Oh my! That is super that you're now back in the running groove -- and with a few months until the 13.1, too! If you can keep this up until then you should be in great shape. I think I'll continue my role as Full Service Mentor and give you 4am wake-up calls while you're at the beach. To my way of thinking, that's the ideal location for early-morning runs --- salt breeze, pelicans and terns cruising and zipping nearby, and planned so that the eastbound leg of the run coincides with the sun creeping above the horizon. Perfect! Do it! Don't backtrack! Which shoes are you in, and how are they agreeing with you? I went for a run in Newton pair #12, first time ----- and forgot to put BodyGlide on my feet beforehand. Oops! Two little blisters on the right foot, first blisters in ages. That's what I get for running without socks AND forgetting BodyGlide WITH new shoes. Doh! Send us all postcards, or better yet -- post a photo or two each morning from your early morning runs. Thanks! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL JESS - Well, you're looking at the telling indicators for a race on a tough day -- the placements. And as you feel, your placements were very good! Moreover, i would give yourself a few minutes for helping that guy, at least one solid one tacked on just for getting back into the flow of it from what must've been an upsetment for your psychologically; I guess "shaken" is a word to describe how you might've felt. I've seen people "down" in races, but never in the process of going down, which is what you saw. At Boston '04, which was a real heatfest, Lynn and my bro-in-law saw lots of people around mile 20-22 who were ashen, ro staggering, or salt-coated, but for some reason I never noticed them myself. I saw lots of people who were being attended to, but I was never in the situation where I felt I should stop and help out. (Truth is.........I might not have helped. I was in pretty good physiological shape, but at that point of that race on that given day, I don't know if I could've statrted up again had I stopped to offer what could be prolonged assistance. Hmmmm.....) Was the NJ swim no-wetsuit? I was thinking that that might've affected your swim time some, but then I quickly remembered that you made it through the rigors of Eagleman sans-wetsuit, so you were probably unflapped with no wetsuit at NJ if it turned out that way. As for the time you take getting "up to speed" on the bike, maybe try some different gearing right from the start. Try the obvious -- if you're usually in the big ring, try the small ring, and vice versa. And if you spend a few moments trying to take in some water or drink, postpone that for about 10 minutes and focus on getting your rhythm the way you want it. Do you consider yourself a heavy swim-kicker. If so, that might have an effect; as a non-kicker myself, I wouldn't know! Because my feet are 99% along for the ride during my swims, they are very fresh when I get out of the water. The rest of me may have been working hard on the swim, but the legs were just dragging along back there. I usually like the concept/image of blowing out of T1, and I'm in my rhythm within about 100 yeards from the mount line. But were I a strong kicker, I'm not sure I would be able to do that, or even close to it. ANYHOW, very good race for you, and I'm sorry I couldn't be there myself. Is ee tat the '10 Athletes Guide is on the webiste, and I'm tempted to print it off just for further incentive for the future! Places in Rutland! Try these: Comfort Inn 802.775.2200 (There are two in Rut, ask for the one nearest routes 4 and 7.) Red Roof Inn 802.775.4303 Ramada Limited 802.773.3361 THerea re others, but these all gave me decent rates, especially with AAA and seniors addded in. I haven't committed to one yet, but will go with either Comfort or Roof, just because those palces usually work for me (altough all you need is one wild wedding party just down the hall...... ) |

Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL hey steve, a quick update on our fexy people........ ken delraso, unfortunately, had major cramping issues on the run and did not have the day he was hoping for. scott baldwin had a great race, but, again, didn't have the run he was hoping for and didn't K qualify. kristin andrews, the girl i mentioned too look out for....broke the AG womens record by 10 minutes and finished 6th overall INCLUDING pros. ridiculous. she isn't fexy, but she is friend of fexy. this was her first IM and her first Marathon!!!! just silly. Fexy teammate, Leslie Knibb, won her AG and K qualified. i'm pretty sure she also broke the record for her AG. ...she was a later mother too. i believe she is 47 and has a 12 year old. inspirational. all of our other teammates finished and some had really break through races. it was fun (and exhausting) to watch!!
So funny story. you met Ernie. he had gray hair and a mustache. the day after the race i was looking up results on my phone and he asked me if i would look up a friend of his to see how he did. the friend? steve bradley. i almost fell out of my chair. He works with him. the same guy from our area. he did LP this year. didn't have a great day. i thought that was hilarious!! so, i did sign up. i am officially registered for 2011 IM USA. i currently have mixed feelings about it. i'm a little nervous that i am registered for my second before i've done my first....and, i'll be honest, i'm also a little disappointed about postponing the family thing. although, being registered doesn't mean i can change my mind i guess. in general, though, i'm excited. when i did the full course on wednesday, i averaged 17.6mph. in that ride i did the second loop on my own at 18.8 mph average. the first loop was in a group of teammates and we had to do a lot of slowing down for the slower riders. i also soft pedaled up most of the hills. the last women to get a k slot in my age group did a 10:46. most intriguing was the woman who places one spot ahead of her. she did a 10:43. this included a 1:03 swim, 5:58 bike (18.7mph) and a 3:35 run (8:14 min/miles). i definitely think this is more than doable for me for next year. the fly in the ointment is that i know 2 women who signed up for next year from my area that are stellar athletes. it will be my focus this next year to surpass them. ....ryan just got home from grocery shopping. i guess i should do do something to help him, eh. oh, i did go to get ART twice while i was there. the first treatment was really good. i really liked the guy a lot. between that and giving it a few more days, i had a good run today. i'm cautiously optimistic. i definitely felt like i had lost some run fitness, but i hope there is time to get back to at least where i was. fingers crossed. less than 5 weeks left!!!!! |

Jess? Jesus, I just looked that up and I do not think I'm qualified for that... haha Sounds like a ridiculously awesome race though - I'll let it marinate. Apparently, like Steve - I'm a marinate-r. Here we are - a month and a half after Eagleman - and I still don't quite know how to shape the rest of my season! BUT, after lots of thinking - here is a rough sketch for the rest of the year (and NEXT YEAR!) - Half Vermont Journey: August 29 - I haven't signed up for this race yet, but I will tonight. Will post when I have STEVE - my only reservation about the race is the fact that I will be one of the last finishers, looking at last years results. So you better stick around to cheer me on to the bitter end!! I want to do one other fall HIM. I think it will be either Bassman, Mightyman or Belly of the Beast HIM. Bassman and Mightyman are both the weekend of October 2-3. My only problem with that weekend is that I THINK Mark's older brother is getting married that weekend. (I say *I think* because there is a bit of family drama with that, so I'm not quite sure when the wedding is or if it will happen *gulp*). So I'm still playing out that weekend by ear. If he is getting married that weekend, I'd prefer to find another race on the next weekend (October 9-10) but I don't know what's out there. I have pretty much decided that I *won't* be at B2B this year. I just won't be ready, and this isn't something I want to rush. Work has been really crazy lately - I work in a division (Chancery) that has two judges. The other judge was recently elevated to the Appellate Division, so she officially left the second week in July. For the past two weeks, my judge has been handling almost every emergent matter coming into the courthouse (i.e. special medical applications - when a person can't consent to medical care and a judge needs to be consulted, applications for random temporary restraining orders - not the kind you think of like on TV with family drama, but immediate, urgent relief... for example, the other day he issued an order preventing someone from being cremated or tomorrow we have an application to remove someone from their house and another to stop someone from violating the terms of a restrictive covenant...) Anyway, it's been intense. With that much on my plate - plus the new job coming up, etc. I'm just not going to be ready. And I'm cool with that!! So, with B2B off the board (unless I felt compelled to pay the charity fee for the HIM ), I'm back to planning my first IM for next year! I am torn between the following two races: either IM Louisville or IM Cozumel. Honestly, I'm leaning towards Louisville, because I don't want to have the stress of major travel associated with the race... I know it would be hot, but I could prepare with that knowledge. While I found the runs at Eman and NJ State difficult (both 95+ degrees) - I wouldn't say I majorly imploded on either run. I think with lots of mental preparation, I could be ok in the heat. And since for me, the race is more about finishing than time - I think I'd be ok with it! Anyway - so I'm leaning towards IMLou 2011! My only reservation there is ... I may have some major "family planning" of my own to work around next fall Not of the kind Lisa is talking about ... The kind I'm thinking about only takes one day (probably a weekend), involves a really awesome party... don't want to jinx anything, but I'll just say that Mark and I have had some serious (ly awesome!!!) discussions lately So - if I'm at IMLou - I think the rest of the season would work out as follows: - Bassman/Devilman - IM RI 70.3 - IMLou Uh. So. That's where I am. I've been sitting on that for a while, but I think that's it! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL LISA - Last things first....don't get spooked already by the fact that two very goiod women in your a.g. are also in for IMLP next year. As you can tell from Ken and my Ian (if you followed his race), on any given day IM can be a very cruel mistress. Ian, posed and hoping to go 9:46 or so, finished in 11:42 or so, with a very dismal run. I don't know where it all went sour for him, but as the bike splits came up I was wondering if he was having an off day. He is a very experienced racer, and all he was hoping for was for naught. I saw Ken's bike splits come up, and I was wondering if he was making the classic LP mistake of hammering the hell out of the first lap.....and then I saw the second one looking about the same! So, i was concerned for him, and then getting home that night and seeing his run told me that bad stuff stuff had happened on the marathon. Is he in for next year. I followed your other folk, too, being very impressed with Scoot's bike as it was unfolding. Kim had a great swim (all those SEAL years, i guess!), but his bike was a bit behind the others. Leslie \was doing well enough early on.....but the real blow-me-out-of-the-water was Kristin, just killing the bike. I had similar thoughts about her as I did about Ken, although you had raved about her so much that I figured she was going to keep it together. And then I got home and saw her marathon time ---- YOWZERS! I didn't see how much she had taken the rest of the a.g. by at that point, but what you say doesn't surprise me at all. And I saw the other Steve Bradley's results, and it did look like a rough day for him -- 14:20, maybe? Look at the results from M60-64, and see how close Steven Smith came to James Dicker, having stalked him throughout the run! The one time I raced against Smith he beat me by about 3 or 4 minutes, and that was an oly. He is a great swimmer, but as I've looked at our results the past couple of years I see my bike as being stronger, and our runs abot the same. As for Dicker, I know him by (1) he has done Triple-T each of the past two years, and (2) he placed a spot or two ahead of me in USAT rankings last year. He too is a better swimmer than I am (so is the rock by the driveway of the Fexy compound in LP.... ), but our bike and run times are very comparable. I NEED TRAINING PARTNERS!!!!!! Are you soloing Triple-T, or doing it with.....whom? More later, Lynn is breathing down my neck! |

Was having a hard time getting out of bed and onto the trainer this morning, so I signed up Now I'm plenty motivated to get on that bike (ps- I'm bummed that it's going to be the trainer It's been staying dark until like 5:30 lately - absolutely negating the possibility of any morning rides ) |
