Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - If it's any consolation for you, in four weeks I'll be out on my first half-iron of the season, and so far I have done one 56+ mile ride (it was about 58, and not at pace!) and maybe 10 or 11 miles as my longest run. I have become ace at 40 +/- rides and 6-8 mile runs.....buit obviously need to update and hone my skills at something closer to what an HIM will require. The problem: Next weekend has an oly Staurday am, a sprint Sturday pm, and then an oly Sunday am. The following weekend has a sprint on the Sunday....and maybe another sprint on the Saturday. So, with that race schedule, I'm not sure when it is wise to start adding lmies. It might be that the mileage push happens form August 16-26.......and we'll see where that gets me! One plan I looked at recently for IM had the long run at 16 miles, so maybe that will be a scheme that -- necessity being the mother of invention -- works for you and IMAZ. As I look ahead to possibly Beach 2 Battleship iron, I'm wondering about toipping at 20 - once. I'm still a bit raw about doing all that marathon training for Kiawah and then 10 days out, on my last of several 20+ mile runs, having my ITB go wonky and remove me from the race, so if I sign up for B2B it will be with the goal of doing too much pre-race damage due to running long, lots. Finally, when I called you Sun God a few weeks ago after I heard Phil Leggett say that they will be the new sponsor of what has been Saxobank, that was wrong. I later saw on someone's race jersey the word Sungard, but filtering that through Phil's British accent made me hear "Sun God" instead of the more likely suspect "Sungard". Those silly Brits, you know? And good luck on the 180-minuter today! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - Yes! Congrats on the long ride! As I just posted to Neil, I'm behind in my own training for Vermont, with just one 58-miler to my credit. I've been up in the Gatineau Hills a few times recently, and while those rides have not been as long, they have been Gats-brutal. I guess that is some prep for VT, but it's way too overkilly in one respect, and not long enough in the other respect. Maybe I'll get it figured out within the next 27 days! ![]() Any thoughts on Long Branch on the 14th? I haven't thought much about it and haven't heard from them, but USAT did tell me to just use one of the U.S.A. addresses to which I am vaguely attached. I'm not sure it;s in my best interest to do the race, especially if I do Lake Dunmore this coming Sunday, the day after doing both races at Fronhofer Tool Triathlon. Hmmmmm....... I just learned the new WTC rule about wetsuits, so I'm not sure about Eagleman. I mean, I'm not sure about it anyhow, but the decreased chance of using a wetsuit just makes me more unsure. I have little interest in going to Clearwater, and Hawaii -- were that even attainable for me -- isn't in our travel plans, so I'm probably better off choosing non-WTC races. Lisa mentioned Quassy, and I might look at that again. Well, I did in fact look at it yesterday. This was the race that annihilated Nathan (and many others) in '09, but they tamed it some for this past June. It's still kind of tough, but at least the run is kindler and gentler. (Couldn't've been much crueler and nastier.) By the way, go to the website at www.rev3tri.com and on the left dside is a list of recent blog entires. Read the one by Jordan Rapp on preparing for the Quassy bike, which is a great summary of basic facts of climbing hills. Of course, Ms. Billy Goat, it sounds like you could maybe write the book on that yourself! I just recently had someone tell me that I must be part mountain goat, so I can relate to the pleasure you must've gotten from the billy goat comparison! Baaaaaaahhhh!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Oh. Dear me. What am I to do with that visual you just lobbed out here --- the one about pink undewear. Oh, dear. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA again - About the shoes, then! As I became more midfoot/forefoot myself and started seeing my own wear patterns, I got to thinking that for mid/fore runners they can wear anything because their footfall comes after the point at which the torquing of over=pronation would be most harmful. For that to happen (harmful over-pron), it seems as if there would be the well-defined heel-strike, and then the foot would collapse inward, having lots of area in which to do it. But mid/fore not only encourages or promotes landing more laterally, but also allows that much less time for pronation to happen. That's how I see it, anyhow. So, on the 29th you'll be doing 140.6.....and Ryan will be doing 140.6.....and Jess and I combined will be doing 140.6. Ta-da!! No Quassy for you then, i guess. Rats. I had gotten kind of psyched about that, printing off all the gories. It will be pretty easy for me to contemplate Quassy or Moosey and Eagle at that time, with TTT being less likely. Tghe big problem for me and TTT is taht I'm struggling to get my training up to speed after our winters here as it is, let alone in view of the demands of TTT. I know it's not impossible, just more difficult. Dauntingly so? Not quite. but...... Back to yours to refresh my memory! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA once more - I don't know if its' a matter of knowing you too well, but I remember some stories -- one or two of being in races with Ryan, and he wants to talk or even just acknowlege you, and you glower and/or growl at him. (And yet at Reston, you were "cordial" enough to me on the run to tell me that you hadn't seen Joe O'G for a while!) Those team requirements (start and finish at same time) at TTT come at weird times -- like the last two races. Those are the times in which people are more likely to be stressed-out nd a bit fractious, and for soemone who is really looking to do something decent and personal with the half-iron, it's tough to have the syncronous start and finish requirement. For the second oly, the legendary problem is people cramping on the run, which directly follows the swim. I would be really curious to see if my swimming style (virtually no kick) would spare me that agony. I think it might, and I wonder how many TTT veterans employ that technique for oly #2. I frequently do swim/run bricks when I do my swim/runs in Ottawa, and I haven't had a problem with cramping yet. Yet. Yet. Enough of me blabbing! Besides, you're out on a 22-miler, WHICH I HOPE EXCEEDS YOUR WILDEST HOPES!!!!! Speaking of wildest hopes......any headway with Ryan on moving northward, like to LP and environs? And speaking of Ryan.......what color is he sporting for the LOO underwear run?? (Just trying to deflect my thoughts from the pink ones......) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() neil, injuries are incredibly frusturating. i fancy myself a pretty strong person, but the times when i have had injuries test me even more than the highest volume training when i'm healthy. when i had my hip issues in 2009 i was emotional. a lot. it's especially difficult when you associate yourself with people who are still training. i totally feel your pain. even those 2.5 weeks of no running last month wreaked havoc on my mental health. i guess the only consolation is that you are hopefully through the worst of it. it's also great that you can ride a lot now. bike fitness is really the key to the IM anyway, as you know. focus on that now, and the rest will come. you're registered for arizona again, right? what's the latest word on the dam? |
|
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() the run went really well. i'm so relieved. it was supposed to be 22 miles or 3 hours, whichever came first. i did just over 20 in the 3 hours. just shy of a 9:00 pace, and for most of the run i was solidily in zone 1. the course was also really hilly. we were either going up or down, with very little in between. the ankles starting hurting a lot around mile 13, but that is normal for me. ...and since they both hurt, i'm pretty sure it's not sprain related. it's just what they do. i came home and iced. i suggested ryan do the same, but he couldn't put his feet in the bucket for more than 30 seconds. i'm pretty sure he cried in the process. he kept whining, "it's cold". i'm pretty sure that's the point. guys are such sissys. anyway, have to go eat something. i'm starving. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Yup -- There's nothing that is more "testing" than injuries! I complain a lot about never having anyone to train with, but the upside of that is that I don't have associates who train. I felt very badly for you at LP, with all the FExy folk off running, and you not. That would've made me very miserable. more miserable than the injury itself, probably! Three cheers for the run, though!!! You must be relived beyond belief.......and now all you have to do is coddle Ryan with the ice. It's not that he's a sissy, it's that he's "sensitive". And think of all the poor starving women in the world who would love a "sensitive" man! See? |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() steve!!!! i wanted to report that ryan got his "outfit" for the underwear run yesterday. you know what underroo's are right? your son must have worn them. the kids underwear with cartoon characters on them. well ryan found adult ones in target yesterday, and they had the Ironman comic!!!!! so he now has a black and red pair of underroos with the Ironman character on his, um, package. love it. it's going to be fun |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - It's kind of frightening that they make those in adult sizes, as most adults do not od such things as underwear runs -- which are the perfect use for them for adults. You know, we'll need photos of all of this, at the time. I mean, without photos it just didn't happen, right? ![]() While I'm typing, tere is the endless two-part loop of the guy swimming in the Endless Pool, and you can really see his extended reach with his right arm in the one below him. Do you do that -- extend your reach? I don't, unless I think about it --- which isn't near often enough. And there you have my Technique Flaw #23, in a series. ![]() Watching him some more, there's the extention at the same time he is executed his final strong push, prefectly timed. Sigh...... |

Signed up for Eagleman today - shortly after 9am. Yay! I am excited. That reminds me - I should book a hotel room now. As much as I liked camping this year ... I don't know about Long Branch - kind of leaning away from doing it. It's a close friend's birthday that weekend, and I promised I'd go into the city with her for a street fair ![]() As for the billy goat comment - I quite enjoyed it! The rest of the conversation went something like: - Old guy: "You may be scared to go down hills, but you sure can climb them" - Me: "Just helps that I'm really stubborn." ![]() ![]() Really interesting blog post by Mr. Rapp - I really appreciated the recommendation to start with the proper gearing. I was actually struggling with my gearing this weekend - I dropped my chain TWICE going uphill ![]() Oh yeah, the following video pretty much convinced me that Long Branch is a BAD idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeL5t8RXB20 |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - My plan for this weekend is still to do both Fronhofer races on Saturday AND Lake Dunmore oly on Sunday. That would put me in a Rutland motel Saturday night, so I'll be able to do the drive to Lake D on Sunday morning and have an idea how much of a nuisance it is. (Hopefully, not much at all!) I will let you know all about this asap, probably Sunday evening. So, I have to get planning about THIS weekend, i guess! Good stuff on the eagleman sign-up. Revenge shall be yours! My two years there I stayed at a...........can't remember! ........in Easton. That made for a very gentle 15-minute drive to the race site; highly recommended! I will get to the E-man site later and find the name of that place on the lodgings list. It is right on the tip of my tongue -- but not budging at all. I will try the youtube video later, but those are notoriously slow for me. can you breifly tell me what it says that suggests Long Branch is a BAD idea? If I actually manage to do all three of the races this weekend, and with West Point on the 15th, I will pass on L.B. -- especially if you're nowhere within sight! Stubborn? You?? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Whadaya make of this: I think I told you at LP that I'm looking for a "system" for nutrition. Hammer served me well for years and probably still would, but I'm still in the midst of my snit-fit about them not listing all of the stuff in their formulations. I tried CarbBoom!....and would do that if they weren't re-tooling operations and actually had decent product available in a number of get-to places. Learning about Perform, i was psyched. That was the missing link in the PowerBar arsenal, and I bought those trial bottles with all the good intentions in the world. I saw that High Peaks Cyclery in LP has the tubs of Perform powder, and one of my goals on friday driving through there was to buy the flavor of the powder I like best. And over the past week i have even bought other PowerBar products, not swayed at all by the reports of gastric problems at IMLP. That's all preamble to.... Today I cracked my first bottle of Perform, the orange-mango one, which I carried on a bike ride. I drank about 2/3 of it during the ride, liking it well enough. I had a good 44.5km ride, and then went for a brisk 10.3km in which I was also feeling pretty good. I was real hot though and quite parched, as I had not planted any water beforehand. I finished the run and downed a bunch of water, and then onre big swig of the Perform. That was yummy......but then about 2 minutes later I had a strong stomach cramp, then another, and another, and another. This went on for about 20 minutes, maybe about 15 cramp episodes all told, and those were all about 2-4 inches below my navel. In all my years of doing this silliness, I have NEVER had cramping. NEVER!!! So, what happened today? Could it actually be the Perform, maybe soemthing to do with their proprietary combination of glucose and fructose? It's not like I went into the ride/run fearing some problem a la IMLP, and I wasn't even thinking about it. BUt something weird and unplaeasant happened, andit's hard not to attribute it to the Perfom -- which was the only "new" thing I did today. Needless to say, i will not bne buying the Perfom powder at High Peaks Cyclery on Friday! I have to re-think this little scheme of mine, as well as give a try to one or both of the other two flavors. Buit I'm sure not going to do anything radical before the weekend's aces, and for them I will stick with something more tried and true -- likely HEED. When you see Ken again, ask him about his symptoms, and I will do the same for sure when I talk with ian Fraser (likely Wednesday). Cramps suck!!!! |

Reserved at the Hampton Inn in Easton - I love Hampton Inn's (my favorite budget-y type chain) and we stayed at that one on Sunday night when I didn't feel like driving back after the race this year. Somehow, I sneaked in a AAA rate, and got it for $130 a night! What a steal ![]() The video: it's a video of a shark swimming up literally ONTO the beach at the Jersey shore last week (Seaside Park - I think). All over the news around here! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - I'm sure mine was a Comfort Inn - east side of the highway, looked nice, had great rooms towards the back that were soundless. But you did well with The Hampton Inn! I'm now off to book Saturday night in Rutland -- either Comfort or Red Roof. I've had good luck with both, although as you know it is all highly variable depending on this, that, and the other thing. Onwards!! |
|
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS again - I just booked th Red Roof in Rutland for this Saturday, and I guess if all goes well I will choose it again for Half Vermont. THere doesn't seem to be a Hampton in Rutland, so you just might have to "slum" somewhere else! For this Friday night I am tenting in the Lake Lauderdale Camprground, which I did at FTT in '08. It worked pretty well, and waking up at ~3am to hear three barred owls serenading was kind of nice. There are no viable breakfast options, however, so I guess it's grab a bagel on the way down and squirrel it away until Saturday morning. It's now off to try to reserve a spot at Canoe Island Lodge, which is the thing I won at the raffle at Lake George Triathlon last Sept --- that, and entry into this year's race. That along was/is worth $100, and the lodge will be even more value. I got lucky last Sept 19! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() that's really odd about the powerbar perform and the cramps. i wouldn't give up on it based off of one attempt. i'd definitely try it again and see what happens (but, maybe make sure you don't go too far from home I posted on the fexy forum so we can see what people say. Here's the link http://www.teamfexy.com/forums/messages.cfm?threadid=3FDC804A-BEC6-CE71-F65EB340D4332012 you don't have to be a member of fexy to access most of the forums. you can't post, but you can read. today was an up and down training day. i swam at noon and felt like i was going to drown. i really felt like i couldn't stay afloat. i've noticed in the last 2 weeks some major composition changes in my body. i can feel my body fat composition shrinking rapidly. i felt in the water today almost like i had buoyancy issues. ...maybe from composition changes? not sure. at any rate, i felt really weak and came home and ate a burger. i just felt like i was wasting away. then this evening at track we did a VDOT test. basically it's a 3k time trial at 100% effort. the time from this is used to calculate different paces for training as well as extrapolate what your estimated race times are for various distances. when i did this test in february, i did the 3k in 12:44 (6:50min/mile pace). I did tonights test in 11:45 (6:18min/mile). i was happy with the improvement. this puts my estimated marathon time at 3:16 and my estimated ironman marathon at 3:46. is that silly or what? it was hot and humid out during the test, i just ran 20 miles on sunday and haven't had a day off since last monday, so i was pretty happy with the results. all in all, i'm feeling like i'm as ready as i'm going to be for loo. i'm anxious to see how the chips fall. so what races do you guys have coming up this weekend? i've seen some back and forth about where your staying, but what are you doing? hope you're well!!!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() steve, jess saw this on facebook so i thought i would share my newton haiku from yesterday. My breath was rhythmic

![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Thank you for vetting (am I using that correctly?) that on the Fexy forum - those are some interesting responses. It still boggles me as to what happened, as that was a first. I haven't yet gone back to the other two bottles, but I will soon (or at least one of them ![]() I have never had trouble with protein drinks, be it Perpetuem, Sustained Energy, or Accelerade....and also my special formulation of Infinit. But I know Perform is not a protein drink; I'm only saying that because it came up in one (two?) of the responses. For Saturday, I am doing a switcheroo back to all-Hammer, just to see how that works. So it will be HEED on the bike, and Hammer Gel elsewhere. What that probably means is that I will up the ante for Half Vermont in three weeks, including Perpertuem on the bike and maybe a "breakfast" of Sustained Energy. I have done this for many half-irons, and it has worked fine. HOWEVER, I will hit Placid Planet tomorrow on my way down to FTT, and if they have EFS I will give that a try. Last time I was there, about two months ago, EFS was not in their arsenal. I'm also thinking of getting some Carbo-Pro, but I will probably postpone that yet again. Onwards! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA again - Jess and I will get together in three weeks, at Half Vermont -- the same day you'll be at LOO!! The talk about this weekend came from me thinking I would do a THIRD race, on Sunday, at the same venue as Half Vermont. Part of my plan was to stay in Rutland and see how difficult the drive is from there to the race site, and maybe think about staying closer for Half Vermont. But.....I twanged my achilles yesterday, so I will probably skip the Sunday race and just do the Double Tri at Fronhofer Tool Triathlon on Saturday. That will be the oly at 8 and the sprint at 2. That should be enough, you think? It also goes nicely with my approach this year to do over-race, and also not do races that don't really matter.....but then there were (are) solid reasons for doing Lake Dunmore on Sunday. In fact, maybe I should've chosen that one and just forget about FTT, but I know a bunch of people who will be at FTT, so there is that. Just as an aside, I dying without friends these days. Lynn is in Newfoundland for 16 days (3 down...), and I'm feeling pretty lonely. mostly, though, it just highlights the fact that I have no triathlon playmates. Same old story. Sigh. To make it worse, a meet-up tomorrow with an old friend won't materialize, and another planned for Sunday won't either. Boo hoo. Onwards!! |

![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA once more - That is very interesting about your body composition, and how you are feeling it in the water! It sure doesn't surprise me, given the regimen you have been on for months now. But I doubt you are "wasting away"; in fact, you looked fine at LP a couple weeks ago. I noticed no dramatic change in how you looked compared with at Columbia, or Reston in Sept.....but then again, I wasn't looking, period. Still, I think I would've noticed if you were looking a bit emaciated! How much has your weight dropped (rhetorical question)? I seem to remember you being at about 118, but I might be wrong about that. Anyhow, in my own experience I can undergo a loss of about ten pounds and suffer no ill effects -- which is my way of saying that the sensation of wasting away probably isn't a bad thing. The irony of it, though, is that for the IMLOO swim you probably want some extra buoyancy, given that it is non-wetsuit! But maybe yesterday was just a fluke, a reflection of being tired, and next swim will have you feeling that your body mass has re-distributed itself in a swim-friendly fashion. GREAT result with the VDOT -- you were flying!! What is good about it is that it was done at hot and humid, which will likely mirror LOO. I think it was brilliant of you to insist of doing your pre-Eagle runs at the height of the day's heat, because you are still proving that hot and humid doesn't beat you down. Finally, some people don't have a sense of humor, do they? I'm referring to the person on Facebook who kind of took you to task about stalking via Athlinks. You defended yourself very well, however! I remember you saying last year that you love a good scrap on forums and the like (was it something to do with Deremo?), and you certainly rose to the occasion today! Grrr! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I simply meant my training. I feel like I am getting back. After tommorow I will be up to 10hrs per week training...without running still, but that will come soon (next 5 days or so). Will try to pull out the TT tomorrow and get it ready, been strictly on the roadie and I am itching to find out how I am in the aero position riding right now. Will be a good assessment. I havn't been on it since IMAZ. |
