Expert 745 Bethesda, MD/Northern NJ | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Alright! Steve - did you get that email today? Very thorough! Sounds like the pre-race dinner is at Mister Ups, we get our bracelets ahead of time, and should try to get a reservation. I think I'll just be plus one. No law clerks tagging along - those friends have to work the Monday and Tuesday. Technically, our contract runs through August 31, but my Judge will be going on vacation the week of August 30th, and I have enough vacation to use those last two days. So yes, lots of driving for me. Up to Vermont on Saturday, back to NJ Monday, and up to Montreal Tuesday evening As for my plus one, it will either be Mark or my brother, Chris. Mark was supposed to come with me, but he got a temp job today that starts Wednesday. He obviously will need to be back in NJ on Monday morning, so it's whether I want to ride back to NJ after the race or crash in VT for the night. If Mark doesn't come, then I'll recruit my brother Chris to be my support crew Chris graduated from UVM last December. He was up in Burlington for the summer working for the Burlington Lake Monsters (minor league team). |

Expert 745 Bethesda, MD/Northern NJ | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL I am feeling a little better this evening. Still felt kind of sickly all day, but I tracked down some Emergen-C and took that, and I've been consuming Vitamin C lozenges at a rapid clip I got in an easy 5 mile run, and that contributed to a better mood. Early bed (as in right now) will go a long way to making me feel better. My new job - working at a large law firm here in New Jersey. It's actually a really great group of people (I spent a summer working there during law school) and there will be challenging and interesting work, so I'm sure everything will work out fine. I just want to be settled and know what I'm doing! Transition periods are always tough. Today was drizzly and cool - it just smelled like fall. I cannot wait to be running in the fall weather |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL LISA - That was just a test of my system; a few times recently it has taken a long time to post due to some security alert upload offer blocking the way. Or something! VERY exciting times for you, to be sure! This morning I was thinking wistfully about you and Ryan being there, and me not. The irony of this is that my qualms really came down to a fear that I wouldn't be healthy and would have to bail, and it turns out that I have had a remarkable healthy season. (Of course, had I signed up for IMLOO I would've been besieged by injuries.....) Instead, I live vicarioulsy through you for a day or few.......BUT then again I have my own little challenge on Sunday with Half Vermont, along with Jess! Halleloo! We will be sure to toast you on Saturday night at the pasta feed, and again with water botles on Sunday morning! When do you hope to hit the water, which kinda means when do you plan to add yourselves to the line? And it's eastern time zone for Louisville, yes? More to come in a moment. The door is knocking. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL LISA again - Well.........you are in such good hands with Scott, and the Fexy crew, and your ace wingman Ryan, that I have nothing much to add by way of advice -- except for one small matter. I told Neil this before IMAZ, and it's what Erik told me -- Expect the Unexpected. Or, at least be prepared for it. At IMLP it was the yellow jacket flying into my top and stinging me a couple of times (on the first of the ascents into Keene, past the long skinny pretty lake to the right), AND my chain driopping once on each loop, just a mile or two beyond Wilmington. At The Canadian Iron, it was my neuroma taking on a new life on the run, which was a sensation of acute burning. this is textbook, but as mine was never really textbok this hadn't happened -- until maybe mile 19. I stopped, massaged it as I had read, and it didn't flare up again. ANYHOW, that's not to see that the unexpected will befall you, but if it does try not to let in throw you off your game. Other than that, your various support and learning crews mentioned above have your covered, and that's all I have to say! We hope to hear from you between now and then, but if not.........holy crap? NO! Nononononono! Holy Great Race! Holy Memorable Day! Holy Game Plan Followed! FWIW, my thoughts will be with you more on Sunday than they'll be on myself. You and Jess and Ryan -- numero un, deux, trois! Me? ??? That's it from here. Holy Stress-Free! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL JESS - Yup, got the email and feel confident that it will be well-run. A woman who I see frequently at the eastern NY races I seem to prefer has also done a few of the Rushton races, and she has high regard for Jerrod -- and I think she is a tough one to please! This series has been there forever, for years and years as Vermont Sun. It became Rushton Sports a few years ago, but their ties with Vermont Sun still seem strong. I just wish it had a few more people in it, but for a half-iron there is a lot to be said for smallish numbers. I gues the ideal for me would be about 300, and 4 or 5 in my age group, but..... I will try to do something clever and pro-active about Mr. Ups, such as make a reservation for six. Maybe for six, at six? I like the idea of eating on the earlier side, and plus for us we have the drive back to Rutland. I guess you know how godawful tedious the traffic can be on Route 7, and while that shouldn't be a problem on Sunday morning, it might be a slow crawl Saturday after the dinner. Ideally, i will get there around one, pick up my stuff, scope out the course, lurk, try to ride the run, lurk some more, and whatever until I meet up with whomever, whenever. Are you hoping to do anything with the course yourself? I guess you have to think about what Mark/Chris will do while you do what you do, so that might get in the way of any adventurous plans? But! Let's keep talkking! I am working through (A) bike problems, (B) car problems, (C) S-I joint problems, and (D) tooth problems these days, so I'm feeling ab bit addled and dissipated. I think (A) was solved yesterday, and (C) should be solved this afternoon, and (B) will be addressed tomorrow morning. As for (D).........I'm working on it?? Maybe by Thursday, then, i'll have a better idea of how I plan to orchestrate my departure from here and my arrival there. Finally, your new job sounds ideal -- familiar environment, good people, interesting work! (And can I assume there is a bump upwards in pay??) Do you have to move, or do you just add to your commute? And as for ideal jobs, Chris' sounds wonderful! Is it beyond just the season, or does it finish any day now? Let's keep floating ideas about Saturday!!! |

Master 1547 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Lisa...don't get sick. Be cautious of the yuck. It may help to keep working out. At least 45 min each day to keep the immune system in check. Doesn't have to be hard, but I'm sure you know this. Have fun at the gatorade swims...they are worth it. |

Veteran 481 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Lisa, sending lots of good mojo your way! I know you're going to have such a fantastic time - all your training geared toward this moment. Can't wait to read all about it. Sorry about your friend. I saw the FB posting and wondered what had happened. Jess - congrats on your new job. The fact that you are sad about leaving your current one is a testament to the good job you've done and the relationships you've made. How much better is it to be sad than to be wishing it was over and wasting a year!! I'm slowly ramping up my miles for my 13.1. Should run 16 this week and 18 next. Small peanuts compared to all of you, but still an accomplishment for me. It's been brutally humid so running outside has not been pleasant. So far I've had to run the treadmill for most of the runs and hope I can get at least a couple of long runs outside before Oct 3.

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL MINDY - NOT "small peanuts" at all -- compared to anyone else or otherwise! And if you want comparisons, heck, I' going into this Sunday's half-iron with one run over 13.1 miles -- maybe 13.2. So if you're there knocking off 16s and 18s, that's putting you into range of a full marathon! You are taking miles and not kilometers, yes? If it's km, then you are close to being ready for the half marathon. If it's MILES.....you are way over what you need, and the task now will be to not burn yourself out with the race still about 9 or 10 weeks away. That, and also try to avoid some of those pesky overuse injuries. I'd say that if the 16 and 18 refer to miles, you will be best served by dialing things back and keeping your long runs no longer than 15 -- and maybe that only every 2nd or 3rd week. What do you think? It's BIG peanuts, Mindy, BIG peanuts. (Maybe even coconuts, in fact!) Never dimisnish any of the accomplishments you are working towards, as they are ALL valid! |

Master 1547 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Steve...we are in the USA...it's miles ;-) So today I found myself keeping up with the Peleton. I think I realize one of the reasons I could never hang is I never started when they started, so I was always trying to sprint to catch them. Next time perhaps I will show up at 5pm...from reading the website thats when the pelton starts and the first lap (1 of 10) is nice and slow for warm up. But tonight, oh tonight...I was finishing up my last of 4 "30 second sprints" and as I was coming down from about 30mph in the flats I heard the swarm coming. Not only were they coming, but I was in perfect position to join as I was about to crest the small hill. BAM>>>>>there I was, right in the middle (ok to the right slightly) as 75-100 riders swarm by me...I managed to hang on somehwere arounf position 50 and held almost the exact same position for 2 laps (6 miles). I was flying and my HR was through the roof. Dripping with sweat I just wanted to hang on....all while not giving up so much as a smirk to show my pain (which I imagine many were doing). We were on the fastest part of the course aprox 33mph when I felt the small girations you get when riding on a flat tire at 33mph! I yelled "flat" as I got spit out the back. I surprised I kept it upright, good I was going straight I suppose. So that was my ride...33mph and a flat tire while smack in the middle of a 100 man peleton! Much fun! |

Veteran 481 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Maybe I should clarify - those are weekly mileages. I plan to peak at 25 miles (with a 10 mile long run) a couple of weeks prior to the race. That strategy has worked well in the past. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL MINDY - Got it! And it makes perfect sense and also sounds sensible. As goals/attainments go, those numbers for current weekly mileage are much better than as I had wondered -- long runs in EITHER miles or kilometers. You should be a highly peakized form come October!! Kids in school yet? I'm guessing yes, with maybe even this being their second week. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL NEIL - I'm not fully buying that "in the USA" comment, as what do you more commonly run in a race -- 10km or 6.2 miles, and is it a 5K or a 3.1 miler? Ha! That's a nifty story about being engulfed and then expectorated by the peloton. Very well done on keeping up with them, and especuially well done at not bringing down the back half of them when you flatted! that was probably a pretty close call, and much of it has to come from you having the presence of mind to yell "FLAT!" I can't help but notice that none of them offered to help you -- another piece of evidence that roadies are ultra-anal. (That can be viewed in a couple of ways...) Were you on your road bike or the tri bike.....and do you figure that whatever you were on made any difference in your ability to stay with the peloton? |

Master 1547 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL road bike...bad form to bring the TT to the peleton ride. Although there was a true TT roadie type guy off the back about 10 yards (ha...I said yards!) I had a spare, so it was no big deal. Being at the rose bowl there were hundreds of people to chose from to help me out in the parking lot. here is a short clip to show you #'s...sometimes many more (usually once it starts cooling down). This was a clip on the uphill portion just before it gets fast. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL NEIL - Yeah, I thought I would try to count them, and that's about when I gave up -- maybe six riders after the guys on the whachamacallit, the two-on-one bike. That was nifty! I usually don't try youtube stuff because it takes so long on our dial-up, but my instincts said to give it a try and I'm glad I did. it took less than 10 minutes to be all there, and I just came back to experience the merriment. I am reassured that it is not a big tightly-packed thing such as at the TdF, just because I think of inexperienced riders causing regular pile-ups. As I have evolved into a better-than-decent tri cyclist, i have wondered how that equates to being a better-than=decent road cyclist. I suspect not very well. And, i have no interest in trying straight cycling; no Wednesday night crits for me! (Although I'm not 100% sure what a crit really is.......) Thanks for that clip -- it was fun! |

Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL i definitely am going to try to get in the free ART. I did that twice in placid for my ankle and i don't think it was a coincidence that it was much better soon after! my run yesterday went well. it was just an easy 30 min run. we were able to get to the swim start and the swim finish. the swim start looks very benign, but that is without 3000 people there. you basically jump off a dock that looks like it could be a part of any kids summer camp experience. the river is pretty disgusting. there is a lot of debris. we saw a decent amount of drift wood and trash. blech. oh well. we went to the 4th street live area for dinner last night. what an amazing finish line that will be! it's a covered area of outside bars and restaurants. there are multiple levels so i imagine there will be spectators on the ground as well as above. the coverage will enhance the noise. it's wired for live music because they usually do outdoor concerts there. it's going to be wild (i hope ) steve, the expo isn't outdoors like it is at placid. it's in one of the ballrooms here in our hotel. we're in the galt house and it is a monstrosity. giant. everything is right here. the expo, the store, check in, massages, everything. that's convenient. right now we're getting ready to drive the bike course. we will stop at a segment about 18 miles in where there is a 5 mile out and back (10 miles total). this out and back is supposed to be the most challenging segment from a hill standpoint. we were advised to do this segment to get comfortable with the descent and then the climb. we'll take it easy. we'll follow it up with an easy 10 min brick. we'll then drive the rest of the course. it will take us through a town called La Grange, which has a big spectator festival on race day. you pass through this town twice. once at mile 40ish and then again at mile 70ish. we'll have lunch there and try to gain favor with the La Grange gods. then this afternoon it's packet pick up, hopefully a massage, the ironstore, maybe and then tonight we have a group dinner. there are 23!!!! of us here and going to dinner. those are all people from our area and their spectators. ...and we have another party bus cheering crew of 5 that are heading down on saturday and my mom, who is coming in tomorrow. whoa!! we definitely won't feel lonely on the course!! k, gotta head out. more later.
steve and jess!!! are you feeling ready for this weekend?!!! when are you heading out?? |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL LISA - Once again, huge thanks for the reportage. You sound incredibly loosey-goosey, and that's the best news there can be! But all that stuff you mention -- 4th Street Live, LaGrange, the skanky river, and so on -- that was all part of my vision for IMLOO, last fall. I thought I had come to peace with not doing it....but now I'm not so sure. HOWEVER..... Having told you the other day that I'm feeling as healthy this season as I have in years, things have kinda taken a downturn. After a run two days ago my left knee started to hurt, and while initially I thought it might be ITB, I doubt that was the problem. I then rode for two hours yesterday and felt it every pedal stroke, but it never got worse. After that, I decided to shut down both the run and bike until the race. Then during the night last night the hamstring started twangy, and was abit sensitive this morning. The maybe-good news is that both are feeling pretty much all fine now, but I will continue in "bubble-wrap mode" until Sunday --- just in case. If I had been heading to IMLOO with these things besetting me, I would be in full freak-out mode. It's bad enough facing the prospect of them for 70.3, let alone 140.6! To add to that there have been two separate car issues and a chipped tooth problem, all of which have needed addressing. In short, it has not been a restful week! But you!! It's all peaches and cream there, with lots of friends and associates, and all the thrills of the ever-growing vibe. I envy you some, but mostly I am just so pleased that you're in the catbird seat*. Give Ryan a hug from me, okay? *I hope I'm using that correctly. Better go check! |
