Brian

Great Race.  If I could walk part of the run and still finish that fast I'd join the Elite group.

I am down with another major sinus infection that has happened once again (said frustratingly) after a long open water swim.  I swam a 1600 in Open water on Sunday and once again "BOOM".  I am heading to doctor this afternoon  to get some drugs.  This cold is now in my chest.  I am probably going to switch to pool swim training.  This is much too frustrating.  it has happened each time after a long OWS.  Has anyone had any experience with this????????????????????????????????????? HELP!

Anyway hope everyone is doing well.

Tom

crisi13 - 2010-07-26 8:30 PM 5 days and counting!  I'm starting to get a little nervous!!  Any suggestions on tapering, preparing, food this week?

Chrissy, keep your workouts brief, but include some bursts of race pace intensity in each.  Keep your nutrition balanced and don't do anything drastically different.  The day before a race, I try to take in water all day, carry a bottle and sip regurarly.  There is much controversy about "carb loading" the night before, and for a sprint distance race, definitly not a necessity, but I do it anyway (whole wheat pasta, veggies and grilled chicken)  because it is easy to make, I don't have to think about what I'm going to have for dinner and it tastes good!

Relax, get some sleep and remember to have fun!

one other good thing is to stick to familiar foods the days before, nothing new.  If you can drive or ride the bike course before also can make a difference.

Morning all!  Well, another month is just about in the books!  How did July treat you?  Did you meet your goals for the month?   What lies on the horizon for August?

Pretty much only 2 months left in tri season, well at least for me.  Not much goes on in the North East after September.  I'm already thinking ahead to October and wondering what I'm going to do when I don't have to get up at 5:30am and wondering if I will be able to keep the lbs at bay when my volume drops drastically and there is football on the TV, wings on the table and beer in my glass!  This is a conversation for another time, still lots of hard work in front of us!  Many of us still have our A races left.

Crisi, are you ready and excited for your race this weekend?  You have been working so hard, I am very excited for you!
Tom, any progress on the sinus infection?
Noel, I know you have 1 tri left, did you decide to do that 1/2 marathon?  You had a serious running breakthrough recently that is very impressive!
Gerardo, seems like you've had a nice stretch of time in 1 location recently and put in some good training!  What is your progress on that tri-bike?  I want bike porn!
Robin, When we 1st met, the Cleveland Olympic was a big decision for you, can you believe it is a week away?

Hey Brian
I am doing better although was out of work part of Tuesday and all day Wednesday.  It is only my second day of work missed this year.  I am taking anti-biotics for a bacteria infection in sinuses and I am never again going to swim in the local (&^% hole.  This just plain sucks.  This infection is much worse this time and now I don't really know which way to turn.  I am going to try nose plugs and possibly ear plugs to see if that helps.  I have talked to others and it seems as though this is a common issue.  Anyway I am getting better.  Hoping to do a short run tonight and back full swing by Friday/Saturday.
Hope all is well with everyone.

Hey guys, I hope you all are well!

July was a good month for me training-wise.  I've already logged my most mileage per month running-wise.  And it shows as I've seen my running times move from 10:00 min/miles into the high 8's.  I was looking at doing a half marathon in late August, but my wife asked me to wait until she's given birth (her due date is in less than 5 weeks!) so that she can train and do one with me.  So we'll likely do one together next spring.

I've only got one triathlon left this season, a pool based sprint August 15th.  Then its onto baby duty!  Hopefully I'll be able to fall into a routine workout-wise once the baby comes and work starts back up.  I'm likely going to move to 4 days a week (with sometimes 5 if I can squeeze it in) of working out through the fall and winter.  Though I think I might go stir crazy because I've been doing 6 and sometimes 7 days a week now for almost 5 months!

I've got my eyes on doing a half iron man next year... what are everyone's long term goals with triathlon?

Also, anyone up for a challenge in August?  My goal is to run 3 times a week (one long run, one short run, and one interval run) and to log the most miles per month running, which means probably more than 70 miles!  Anyone want to join me?!?

Thanks everyone for all of the good wishes!!  I am so excited and yet sooo nervous!  We just got home from picking up our packets and finally have everything packed (the hubby is doing it too, so I'm excited about that)!  Now, I have to try to get some sleep!  I'll post my race report tomorrow!

Tom - Have you ever tried nasal irrigation?  It sounds gross, but I live by it and I have severe sinus issues.  Here's a link to my favorite irrigation tool http://www.amazon.com/Nasaline-Nasal-Irrigator/dp/B0001C0FLG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1280539324&sr=8-1   I also wear a nose clip and don't seem to have issues from the chlorine or icky river water!   Good luck...I know how horrible sinus issues can be!

Nole...I'm in on the challenge.  After the race tomorrow, I have to make sure I'm back on track for the Olympic in September!

P.S. - I HAVE A CAR AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!  I'm so happy!!

Thanks Crisi.
I am going to take a look at your sinus irrigation plan.  My wife picked up NetiPot for me.  I am going to try that also.  I missed some work this past week and have not touched a workout.  I mowed our lawn just to get out one day and almost could not finish.  I guess you just have to swing with the punches.  Depending on how I feel I am probably going to cancel the Cleveland or switch to the sprint instead of the Olympic.  I am now on 10 days of antibiotics and my chest feels like it is filled with water.  Anyway I hope everyone ids having a great week.  My son Jacob is sick also so we are are home watching Toy Story I and II, Cars, Polar Express and Walle while wife works the weekend at the hospital.  I hope to try a short workout on Sunday.
Take Care All

Congratulations to "Crisi the Triathlete" on your race.  It has a nice ring to it!

Nole, I am in for the challenge this month, I still need to come up with my targets though.

Brian, the bike search is still on going.  All the LBS are running short on inventory, something about bike manufacturers underforecasting for 2010.  This is good, I can stick to my plan of not getting a new bike before I can drop some weight.  As for race season, I still plan on doing a sprint in September and a half Marathon with my wife late november so I need to start ramping up the run part

OK, so it looks like we've got Crisi and Chezz so far in on the running challenge for August.  Who else is in?  And what are your goals?

Here are mine:
  • Run a minimum of 3 times per week
  • Run a total of 75 miles for the month of August

**This is all totally depended on my wife and when my daughter is born.  My wife is due August 27th, so unless the baby is born early I'll almost the entire month to complete the goals.  If the baby does come early, well, then who cares about the goals?!?

Oh, and I went for a long run this morning, so 6.06 miles down... just 68.94 miles to go!

Noel,

I'm in!  I have to tailor my goals based on my training plan, so here is what I am going to work with:

-1 run of 10 or more miles each week
-total run volume in august to surpass 80 miles
-Average 20 miles per week - recovery week coming up, so I might fall short next week

Hey guys, FINALLY got my race report up:

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=220462

We had our vacation in San Diego the week following my race and I went pretty computer silent, was nice.  Ate like a pig and did zero training, looking forward to getting back to it.

Here are my July totals.  I haven't been ignoring you guys, I've just been in a zone focusing on my 3rd and last race.

Bike:

13h 49m 17s  - 169.88 Mi
Run:10h 33m 14s  - 71.08 Mi
Swim:7h 21m 06s  - 21500 M
CRT:1h 00m
Stretching:40m
Walking:1h 43m
Yard Work:3h 05m

I have days until my OLY in Cleveland.  Trying to be calm and relaxed, BUT...  my sister and her family are in for the week and life is hectic.  We have one 6 yr old, one 5 yr old, and two 3 yr olds at my house, Gretchen's husband and my mom.  Steve (the DH) is taking off Wednesday through the rest of the week.

I'm still keeping up with my taper week, and the only alone time I get is typing here or training.  BTW- I LOVE TRAINING! especially now!

I'll get back with you on my August goals.  Right now, I need to focus on Sunday!!!!  Tom, I hope you're healthy enough to be there!  I hear the latest report is that the weekend is supposed to be cool--upper 70's?!?  Does this mean a north wind with lots of chop in the water??????????

I'll be back to check in later this week.  I may have some more last minute questions for the professionals in our group!

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Ok, Mchubri's professionals-- here's a question.  What is your opinion?

As of now, the temp. of Lake Erie is 77 degrees.  The USAT rules state you can wear a wetsuit up to 78 degrees (and still place).  I'm a competitor and will compete as such, even though my first goal is to just plain finish.  Anyway...  what would you do?  Wear the suit?  or not?  It's that funny borderline temperature.  I did practice Saturday with and without the wetsuit in an OWS.  The temp was the same here as it was in Lake Erie and it wasn't too warm for me.  It may be choppy on race day, too.  Does that influence your opinion?

-of course this question could be moot on Sunday when they tell us the actual temp of the harbor-

Robin,

I would wear the wet suit.  For an Olympic distance you are going to be in the water for a while and wearing the wetsuit helps you swim faster and do so without getting as fatigued.  I felt like I could swim significantly faster with the wetsuit and helped keep my legs from getting so tired.  The time you'll lose in transition wont be more than a 30 seconds or so and I'd bet money you'd gain that in the water by having the suit on.  Hope that helps.

My July totals:

Bike:13h 00m 20s  - 223.96 Mi
Run:10h 29m 55s  - 70.69 Mi
Swim:6h 23m 12s  - 17728 M

I'm down on swimming numbers because I really want to focus on running as it is by far my weakest sport.  This is the most time and mileage I have put in for running to date, and I'm hoping August will crush it!

Pretty good July for me, considering I had one week where I nearly blew off everything and another weekend out of town.

July's totals:
Bike:19h 52m 01s  - 341.39 Mi
Run:11h 12m 45s  - 79.7 Mi
Swim:6h 44m 52s  - 18180 Yd

Really happy with my bike and run volume, howeverI wish somewhere I put in an extra .3 miles to have that number read 80! I've been blowing off swims here and there and I have mixed feelings about it. I'm not a fast swimmer and I know it and I feel like putting in an extra 1000 yds per week isn't going to help me get faster.  My swim fitness is good and I can cover the distances I need to at a rate I am comfortable with.  Also, my plan seems to be very swim heavy, so I'm really not beating myself up over it.
