Member 60 Athens, GA | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED I believe that it was a 5k run, 10m bike and 1000y swim, if I am remembering correctly. Your 26m time is still quite impressive. I would kill to get into the 35-39m range |

So I am going to work on the challenge spreadsheet today. What we will do is have 4 categories - Swim, Bike, Run, and Weight. Over the next 3 months, pick 1 a month. This way if you can do one thing or don't have a bike or access to a pool, you can still participate each month. Durning the first couple of the days of the month, do a TT or weigh yourself. Then at the end of the month, do the say thing. The person with the biggest % gain, or weight loss in each category wins. At the end, we will take the average of all 3 and there will be 1 big winner. How does this sound? Let's do - 5k for run 10 miles for bike 1000 yards for swim. There's the info for you! |

The problem is that I haven't actually swam that distance in over two decades, LOL. I guess you are in for a real laugh!! |

Veteran 195 | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED I cannot believe it!!! Every college is closed except mine. Michigan State is even closed! A satelite campus of my college is even closed due to "Snowmeggedon" as they are calling it. But I have to drive an hour for a 7-10 pm class. Well, got to get the animals brought in before I leave and get them all set. You know what, I bet they call it once I get there. Schools are already closed for tomorrow(Venting) Better yet, I will wake up and there will be 3 in. of snow. |

Veteran 612 Kennebunkport, Qatar | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Josh, my time wasn't listed for the beginning run TT, I did a 28:26. Not sure when I will get the end of the month TT done with all of the snow? I forgot that I was going to do it today and instead got in a short bike ride as the snow was falling, 17deg can I keep my Mountaindan name? Then since the roads were getting really bad I decided to do the P90X plyometrics workout in my basement, the legs are a little tired right now! Jackie, sorry to hear about the bike accident, but very happy to hear that you weren't hurt!! I know around here it is safer in the winter than the summer, last year I was nearly hit by cars at least 1/2 dozen times, I thought about taking a spill and get a new bike out of it, but my conscience got in the way, or maybe it was I don't like pain? I can't remember which? Good job everyone that got their runs in, I hope I have even the slightest increase! |

Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Not sure when/if I'll get to the TT -- pretty locked in to the training program now and there's not really a slot for it. Day one of week 3 today -- starting to get more challenging as the interval lengths are increasing as well as the overall time. Still doing OK, but starting to feel it afterwards / legs are tired! By the way Itzia, about 99% certain that I'll win the "slowest" swim. If I can put up a time under 30 minutes for the 1000 yards I'd be ecstatic! Fact is I've only ever done 1000 yards 2-3 times and think the best time I've seen is around 35 minutes. |

I’m not telling how much more LOL. It’s too embarrassing!! I didn’t swim slowly (I think), but I had to stop to take breathers a lot. So... that title will be mine!!! Although there is hope. Today I did 6 x 100 yds and kept each interval below 2:30. Of course my son was happy to let me know that he did 900m yesterday in 12 minutes in PE. My bike was a beginner road bike that I bought used for $500, so I'm not terribly sad to see it go. Gives me a good excuse to upgrade. Just trying to decide what's in the budget now. Great job to everyone on their Jan times. I think my beginning of the month time was a little over 28 mins fro the 5K. I'll get on the treadmill in the next few days and see what I can do. Looks like I won't be doing the century. I doubt I will have a bike ready in time, but we'll see. |

That said, would not advise attempting to recreate. |

But the bike shop said the frame is cracked, so it's unsafe to ride. I'm meeting my friend Mark at the bike shop tomorrow to look at new bikes. I think I'm just gonna spend the money and get something decent. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Jackie -- have fun w/ the bike shopping. What are you looking to get? TT/Road bike? Are your pedals & Shoes from the crashed bike OK to use? Had a good swim workout today -- 2450 yards, including a 1 mile swim (1800 yards) at a surprising pace for me (1:45/100). I seem to have found that once I get past the first 400 or so yards, I really find my groove, and feel like I could keep going for a long time. I stopped at a mile due to time, but felt like I could have kept going. I've been struggling with my swimming recently, and doing a big set like this reminds me I do know what I'm doing, I just need to realize it, and not let the frustrations get me down. I find the biggest key to it all is breathing rhythm. |

It will come with time, practice, and instruction. For me, 7 months ago, I did not really know how to swim in any recognizable form. I could not do 25 yards w/o hanging on the wall to catch my breath. My stroke count per 25 when I first counted was near 30 (yes *30* - in a 25 yard pool!!!). My swimming when I started could be best described as "knows how not to drown". Best thing I did was take a few 1:1 lessons with a good instructor, and practice what I was taught. Also, reading BT swim threads, and checking out video on this site & YouTube of demonstrations of drills, and proper stroke form. It takes time in the pool, emphasis on form, and practice. As of now, I'm an OK/serviceable swimmer, but always feel like I could be more efficient and smooth in the water. Just working toward that next breakthrough. |
