...hey all....i swear, i will catch up with missed posts, but i wanted to give another quick update...

i've really been struggling with training lately and really am not interested in "racing" any more this season.  i'm just over it.  it's been a long season.  so, i've decided to bail on clearwater.  i'm not motivated and given that i cannot justify the expense for ryan and i to fly down there for 3-4 days, probably spend $1,000 (at least) on airfare, bike transport, accomodations, food, finishers gear, etc.  instead, i've followed my gut and have registered for the stone mill 50 mile ultra

 http://stone-mill-50-mile.org/

i've wanted to do jfk for years and have been bummed about missing it all year.  i just learned of stone mill.  it's the first year for it.  the registeration fee is only $35, and it's local.  no major expenses or hassle.  it's fate.

i love the fall and some long, slow distance running actually really appeals to me.   i talked to scott, and he sees no long term issues with it (i.e. turning into a slower runner).  there's plenty of time after that to work on speed again before the 2011 season kicks off.

so there you have it.

jess, are you interested?!

steve, to answer your question about sable, being a foster means its our job to love her and work with her to improve her manners so someone will adopt her.  she's been in the shelter system for a YEAR because she is just so depressed that she didn't really react to people.  she's not aggressive, she just didn't show signs of life.  2 days with us and she's a different dog.  she and i have really hit it off and it's going to be really difficult to give her up.  she's really a great fit for us.  there's nothing but our own selves stopping us from adopting her.  the thought was that we didn't want to because we had such a busy year coming up next year....that's the only thing stopping us.  i'm supposed to be taking her to an adoption event on friday.  i have to prepare myself for someone to take her.  it's likely too because i took her to a starbucks today and sat outside with her and people were very interested in her and liked her.  she was very interactive with them....this from the dog that was lifeless 2 days ago.  she's not going to last long unadopted.  it scares me.

....gotta run.  i've been SO bad at working since i got her.  we've just been playing

LISA -

That sounds like a great option for you. I loved the transition last year from triathlons to marathon training, just plugging away at the longer runs from about Oct 5 until Dec 5 -- when the ITB inflamed. But while that was a disappointment, it does nothing to diminish the pleasure I got from all those marathon-geared training runs.

For you, Clearwater will always be a very viable option; I just can't imagine you not qualifying for it whenever it suits you. As for the expense, well, that's a very obvious downside, and my attitude to Clearwater is that aside from the caliber of athletes there, it just doesn't have the "grab" of Kona. I mean, Clearwater, for god's sake? Come on!

You have sounded flat about training, and I'm sure that once Stone Mill is past and '10 turns into '11, tyou'll be fully recahrged for next season. And I like the idea of "fate" playing a role in all this. Sometimes those things just fall into place.....and it seems like fate!

I'll be thinking of you Friday at the adoption event. Is part of the next 60 hours or so wrestling with the possibility of adopting her, or is that pretty much decided that you won't? I couldn't quite tell from your comments, but suspect it's still up for consideration!

No need to answer the following any time soon -- especially if you need to work more because you have played with Sable so much the past couple of days! BUT......did you buy finisher stuff at LOO, and what exactly do you think of it, about a month after the fact?

On a final note, I am still trying to decide between Pinehurst and Washington Half, with B2B just about out of the picture. Washington has been slow to grow, and now today there is mention of new bike and run courses, with details to follow. This was supposed to be an April race, and then got bumped to the fall, and has only 88 registrants. (That's beyond the ones that will be competing as part of some consortium of university triathlon teams.) So, i don't know. And as there are still about 320 spots left for Pinehurst, there's no big hurry for that, either --- beyond the fact that it is happening in another 18 days! But mostly I'm trained for that, whereas for Washington I still need to get some distance in. Blah, blah, blah!

Great race yet again Steve.  Congrats.  I did not have time for my long run last weekend. Good news is that the temperature here has dropped about 20 degrees in the last couple of days so I'm hoping for a cooler race.  Anyway, I'll keep you posted.  Don't have too high hopes for this one so will just try to have fun.

Lisa, I saw your FB post about planning to run a 50 miler...that's awesome!

Totally would be, if it wasn't the same weekend as Philadelphia! I love their website. Also, the area is guaranteed to be beautiful.  We adopted Eli from a family in Darnestown, if I remember correctly.

So.... I signed up for Ironman Louisville today. I had kind of been planning on doing it for a while, just hadn't quite pulled the trigger. I did it today

I decided on it for a bunch of reasons - but mostly timing. The November races intrigue me - Arizona, Cozumel, B2B. BUT, they are just waaaaay too late in the game for me to keep up motivation and avoid burn out. So it had to be earlier. Back when Lake Placid sign up happened, I had contemplated it, but decided I didn't want to deal with major hills (and --- descents) for my first. I've heard that Louisville is more rolling hill, which I do well with.

So? Bring on the heat Lisa - I will certainly be picking your brain with a fine-tooth comb as we get closer!

And that's that?

Another prospective IRON(WO)MAN!!!  Congrats on taking the leap.

Steve,

Can you believe it?  When we all came on your mentor group we were just beginners.  Since then 2 of us have completed Ironman and now we have a 3rd!

We have come along way.  Thank you for mentoring.

Between Neil and Lisa - the enthusiasm is overwhelming and infectious! Yay - I'm so excited

And Neil is right - alot of my love for this sport comes from the support I've gotten right here in this group. And Steve started it all, so I (we all) owe him a lot. Plus, if I hadn't gotten out and done a second HIM this summer at HVJ (due to his peer pressure!), I never would have considered this!

JESS -

All RIGHT!!!

You know, i was thinking a few days ago about whether you were thinking that way -- not IMLOO per se, but more serious thoughts about an iron. I know we had kicked around B2B thoughts, but that was then and now is now, with HVJ behind you and Philly ahead of you...........and what then might be further along the trajectory? Beyond that, you just sounded comfortable with the new apartment and the new job, and you certainly seemed comfortable (enough) after HVJ, so......

Anyhow, that is all very, very cool, and as the Neil and Lisa and I all know, that act of signing up for an iron changes one's life. It was all very positive for me, thinking a full year ahead, and I'm sure it was for them, too. There will be pressures and worries along the way, but at least in my case it was all part of a big, unfolding process that was 98% positive for the 362 days leading up to the race itself.

Started accomms searching yet? That was one of the really nice things about IMLOO in the several months i contemplated it -- all of the motels available and few of them requiring anything more than a two-night minimum. And, in fact, very few even required that. Need it for just Saturday night? Sure thing! Cancellation policy? 4 p.m. day of arrival, no problem!

You have a couple of big positives working for you with regards to LOO. You have made it through two HOT half-irons, and one of them was a non-wetsuit swim. I think the heat and the sans-wetsuit swim at LOO are the two big psychological bugaboos, and you should just breeze past those, thumbing your nose at them! (And thinking about it now, wasn't your Chicago Marathon a hot affair, too?)

Welcome to the first full day of your Iron Life!

NEIL and JESS -

Many, many thanks for the kind words. I have indeed tried to be useful, imparting a little bit of my knowledge and a lot of bit of my love for this stuff along the way. It is incredibly nifty to watch you all grow and push your limits, but on the other hand I look back and see you as verging on being mostly "fully-formed", anyhow. Or something like that.

I know from the two groups how easy it is for people to fall away, to drift off, to give up, so it is even more pleasing when the ones who stay with it continue to love it. Of the 13 of you all originally, there are just the four left, but each of you is carrying on and working hard to get better -- and mostly seeming to enjoy it in the process!

It's been about 21 months now.........and where will will all be in another 21 months? What will be under our belts midway through the '12 season? I'm really excited to find out! Stay tuned!

Big day tommorow.  Should get 90-100 miles in.

If I can manage to make it to the expo tommorow before they close I will sign up for the sprint.  Havn't done of those since 08.  Figured it would be a good thing to do after my long ride.  And if it works out well...I will sign up for an Oly after my next 100.

NEIL -

"Tomorrow" must mean today, because you posted yesterday, so....

(1) Did you mange the 90/100-miler? If so -- outstanding!
(2) And did you sign up for a sprint, as in doing the sprint itself tomorrow? That would be very cool, if that's the case! I guess I can now amble over to the L.A. Tri site and see if that's what's happening this weeknd!

As for me and long distances, the pressure is off to do a few century rides as I decided to pass on Beach2Battleship. We wil need to spend about $5000 on a new furnace, and Lynn bought a new car today. So, it's hard to justify spending $425 for the race plus about $350 on accoms coming and going and right there, plus gas, plus meals, plus, plus, plus.

I have pretty much decided that going to Pinehurst NC for an int (.9 - 30 - 6.2) isn't worth it, so that's out too. What is left is Washington Half-Iron on Oct 30, which is only $120......but then there are accoms and meals and gas to add in. I could do a few road races, and maybe look at Rehoboth Beach Half-Mar on Dec 11 to finish it all out, but I'm not quite ready to pull the plug on Washington.

Decisions, decisions --- never my strong suit!

Not ready but doing it anyway! Getting ready fo r a restless night of no sleep. At least weather will be nice tomorrow. Starting around 50 degrees probably. High in 70 s but should be done before then. I made the mistake of realizing that at about mile 9 and right before the last really big hill I can turn right instead of left and be home in a mile. Will try not to think about that tomorrow.

Oh I am in.  Not sure if you read the race info but it is a point to point race...so that will be a first for me.  T1 closes at 7 and my wave is at 8:50...so I will have plenty of time to sit around.  8:50 suits me better anyway, I never am quite up for the earlier stuff, well...except on 140.6 morning.

Due to going to the race expo and I guess getting a late start I did not quite get the 90 in.  Got in 68, rode the last 15ish minutes in darkness so I am glad I turned around when I did.  70ish still good though, I feel fine right now.

Next post will be in the am when its all done

Point to point Sprint Course:

  • Swim: .4 miles at Venice Beach
  • Bike: 14.1 miles through Venice, the Fairfax District, and into Downtown L.A.
  • Run: 3.1 miles through Downtown and ending at LA Live

LEAD YOU NOT INTO TEMPTATION!!!

That's a hoot, though, and I hear your sense of unpreparedness loud and clear. The weather gods are finally winking nicely in your general direction, and that's a good omen right there. Heck, isn't tomorrow about the first decent running day you've had since about May 8?

Lots of good mojo for you, but not the whole mass of it -- Neil'll need some for his zoom-zoom tomorrow!

Sounds too cool! I for one would not like the loooooong wait, but as you say about yourself, that works to your advantage. I will now go back to the site and see if there is a handy-dandy map so that those place names make sense to me. I mean, I know them all by name, but where they ar in the grand geograhical scheme of things....I haven't a clue.

Have a blast -- sprints are the cat's meow!

I will be giddy with excitement awaiting your RR, which will complement Mindy's rather nicely. I can't decide, though -- which of you has the yin race and which has the yang?

I survived!  Actually surprised myself by running the entire race.  It was slow, but given my unsuccessful attempts at a long training run, I'll take it.  The course was very hilly.  In fact other than a couple of miles in the middle, the entire race felt like I was going either up or down a hill.  I think my time was around 2:35 - my worst yet.  Oh well, I am glad I was able to run it.

Starting around mile 8 my hips really started hurting.  I told Ivan the silver lining was that I did not think about my feet, which had been hurting on most of my runs, because of it.  Right now, post race, my hips are still painful but should be OK in a day or two.

Ivan ran pretty slow as well - a little under 2 hours.  He did no hill training and felt that was the difference.  The weather was great.  I am definitely a cool weather runner and feel that made the difference for me.

Thanks for the good mojo.  Definitely felt it during the race!

Congratulations on a goal set way back when.......and struggled through en route.....and attained nevertheless!

So, you learned about hills, and the need to relocate to a cooler climate zone. As I've said before, I think you could find running nirvana not too far from Lisa!

And EXCELLENT work on avoiding that homeward turn at mile nine, given that your hips started hurting at mile eight. You must've heard the clarion call of home loud and clear -- or were you totally and irrevocably focused on the finish line at that point?

Okay, now what's next??

All is well here - actually had a great "first" week of marathon training. Put it about 46 miles, which is killer for me. I think I barely hit 51 at my peak training for CIM last year. Did 5 Monday, 8 Tuesday, 5 Wednesday and Thursday, 8 Friday, off day yesterday (Mark's brother's wedding!) and then 15 today.

It's insane how much more 'found time' I have with this new commute. Last year, on the week I finally broke 50, I felt like all I did was drive, work, run, eat and sleep. This week, I only did 5 miles less, but I still had plenty of time to relax, watch TV, hang out with Mark and Eli, etc. I could not have even contemplated IM training with that old commute - I think the new commute (20 mins tops) is going to make it possible. Difficult - but within the realm of possibility!

Also, I feel great despite the big-mileage (for me) week. No aches, no pains, doing great. I love being 25 he he.

I've got a plan in the works to figure out a bike commute come spring I only live 12 miles from the firm, so it will totally be doable. I just have to find some more suitable roads than the roads I normally drive. Shouldn't be a problem to work it out with a little snooping! Also, rumor has it that there is a shower on the fourth floor, so that could be great.

Anyway, headed to my parents house now for dinner Since I had such a good 15 miler today, I'm thinking that I'll be doing the LBI 18-miler again next week. I LOVE that race. It is possibly my favorite race in NJ. Flat, straight - one end of LBI to the other. Weather forecast is perfect - sunny, and high of 68. We'll go down Saturday during the day, go mini-golfing, out to our favorite Italian restaurant, stay at a cheezy motel. Lisa- you interested? hehe

Oh yes, racve is done/ It was actually pretty fun.  I managed 16th place in AG...which is a big improvement for me.  Granted it's been a few years since I have done a sprint...but my math shows 16 out of 47 as either the last of the FOP or the first of the MOP.  Right on the border!

But it was a great race.  I may do an Oly next weekend.  Although I might not...I paid $200 for todays sprint which seemed a bit much.

Here are the results from my division: Results M30-34

My swim was middle of road.  My Bike was 4th fastest. Run was 21st.  So I made up time on the bike but lost some time in the run and swim. Perhaps I can improve on the swim...but there just is no fire in that run tank...I felt like I was pushing it.
