Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL JESS again - The foot/feet are getting incrementally better. The bunion is less of a problem, the neuroma hintings are still there but not as threatening, and the metatarsal tenderness is not quite so acute. I see the doc on Tyesday evening, but maybve should've scheduled with my podiatrist -- just in case one of these conditions eventually warrants something invasive. I haven't run in nine days, but that's okay as I'm convincing myself (or at least trying to....) that now is a GREAT time for my off-season recovery! (I just bought the new issue of Triathlete, and I see that there is a big article on just this topic. May it preach to me!!) (And, how rattled are you by the mid-term elections? Thank god some of the real wackos were denied office.........but there are still plenty to go around. ) |

Expert 745 Bethesda, MD/Northern NJ | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL Steve- Now is the perfect time for off-season recovery! Plus, there is no time for training, what with all the virtual spectating you'll be doing next weekend Right now, obsessing over the weather forecast is fun. Current forecast is: Sun
54° 20%
54°F Could it get more perfect?I think that's shorts weather right? A low of 40 means it'll probably be 40 when we start (7 am) and since I hope to finish around 11 (FINGERS CROSSED) maybe we'll get up to 50 by then? So we're thinking shorts? I am going ninja style. All black. Black shorts. Black shirt, black headband, black socks. Only non-black thing will be my new arm warmers: http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodSU_99920U_1.html Hiya! Too cool. Ok, off to enjoy the beautiful beautiful day. 64 and sunny here in NJ! I already did a spin class this morning, and I'm going to forego a run. Extreme taper time. Reading outside it is |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL JESS - Holy moly -- it doesn't get any better than that! may this be one forecast that manages to maintain its integrity for a whole week! Growing up in MA, the line was "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change." And for the most part, it worked that way! So, along comes Boston marathon '04, and a week out from the race the forecast was for hot, into the 90s. I panicked quickly, and then realized it's Boston....in April....and of course it will change by race morning. Monday turns into Wednesday -- same forecast. Frdiay comes along -- same forecast. I head down there for a couple of days -- same forecast. And sure enough, at the start it was 83 degrees, and made it up to 92 or 93 by the end. Son-of-a-gun!!! It NEVERS hits that high in Boston on April 19, and of course forecasts there never keep their integrity for a whopping eight days. ANYHOW, here's hoping the sweet forecast for Philly next Sunday comes true! And, most definitely, shorts it is. I really think you'll be fine after a mile or two, and maybe just top speed the warming process you could have a top on at the start that you discard almost immediately. But even without that, you'll should be comfortable enough. Now to go and check out those arm-warmers, you woman-in-black-otherwise, you! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL JESS again - "Hiya" is right -- mini-skulls, who'd a-thunk it? I was amazed at the variety of arm-warmers they carry; did I even know there were that many species and sub-species of arm-warmers? Uh-uh. As for those wild bolero thingies -- are they for riding a bike, or painting the town afterwards? Fir anyone who really wants to step out some in their workout apparel, I guess teamestrogen is the place to look for inspiration! I've done a few races each of the past two seasons in a black tri jersey and the satndard black tri shorts, and I'm rather struck by how dashing I look. Not quite sinister, but.....edgy, perhaps? Well, whatever, it's a real departure for me, and I just sort of like it as a change. And seeing as how blondes almost always look terrific in black, it ought to be a great outfit for what should be a great race for you. Hiya! |

And, it was cold, so a mini-sufferfest! Chris Wren, who probably did IMLP in about 1:05 each of his years there, was 1:12 at B2B. John Martin, who told me it was his worst iron-distance swim, was in the water for 1:34. Another reason I'm glad I decided not to do it! |

My oh my, it's awfully quiet around here as the three of you head off in 72-96 hours for your very big Last Race of the Season. Just sayin' ---- I hope all three of you are feeling great, with no wiggles or wonks to mess with your head, and good weather forecasts that will come to pass when you're out there, doing your thing! My happy-thoughts are with you, and will continue to grow over the next few days! |

Master 1547 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL I actually do have a wiggle. Its my lower back. I don't know what happened but my lower back is very tense. I have already seen the chiro to no avail. I am skipping most of my taper this week in lieu of just rest. I figure it can't really hurt. When I get to Tempe Friday I will do a lap of the bike and on Sat a practice swim, so that should be enough. Other than that I am feeling good. Packing up the car tonight and heading out in the morning. If you get a chance to track me on Sunday I will go ahead and put this out there in the universe Perfect Race Option 1hr24min 3min 5hr59min 3min 4hr30min 11hr59min Finish Less than perfect, but still a good day...a repeat of last year 1hr28min 7:02 6hr11min 3:52 5hr04min 12hr54min Anything wildly slower and theres problems. So, in a nutshell: Relax and take care of myself up until race start. Swim first 100 yards faster then settle in, find someone that passes me and look for a draft. take a second at turnaroung and look for 42min on the watch...then draft back to the dock. Skip the socks in transition and move fast. Don't worry about warming up the feet, just like last year they will thaw out in 10 minutes. On the bike take the first lap easy, 2nd lap aim for +/- 2min split, 3rd lap negative split slightly. Pee on the bike if you wish...even though you have never practiced it. T2 same thing, just move quickly, try not to sit down. On the run...look at the Garmin. Do NOT go faster than 10min pace for the first 10 miles, actually, 10 to 10:30 is goal through 18miles. only at that point speed up...don't try to be a hero and run 9 pace...even though I will feel like I can. Note: you can't...not yet. WIll be much more fun speeding up last lap anyway. take a moment and smile at the finish for the photo...also, take a second and look into the camera for the live feed and through a thumbs up to the gang watching from BT. ps...and don't get two speeding tickets driving in Tempe like last year from the photo vans! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL NEIL - Oops with teh back, but other than that you sound fully in command of what you want and the pathways to follow to get there. I'll bet if I went back about 360 days ago (which I just might do!) and read your thoughts, I'd see nothing even half as definitive. Everything you are planning is reasonable, and within the borders of challenging and conservative. The contingency plans (either way) should provide all the cushioning you need. (That is, barring anything catastrophic -- but we're not going to go there!) You can bet your bottom dollar I'll be following you on Sunday -- at least as far as my dial-up system cooperatives. (It's been pretty good this year, so it just has to perform on Sunday and I'll tkae back many of the hurtful things I've said about it.) As for those speeding tickets......I don't think you confessed that last year! Enjoy Tempe, of course, and keep babying the lower back! |

Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL so my report is that my body is revolting. shortly after the ultra i did on the AT, i developed issues with my achilles. when researching my symptoms, i keep turning up achilles tendonopathy. most likely caused by a sudden increase in mileage and/or a change of terrain. hmmm. could an ultra on the AT have qualified? i actually have only run twice in the last 10 days. i've tried to get into our local ART guru, but he can't see me until 11/29. at this point, i'm going to start the run and see how it goes. if i feel like i'm doing damage, i'll stop. at this point, i'm really hoping it doesn't get worse. i'm ready to be done with it. it might just be a fun day hiking in the woods. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: stevebradley's Mentor Group FULL LISA - I guess you know from your reading that achilles problems can be persistent, although many people also just feel and a tweak and an ache, and rest a bit, and it's over. I sure hope that's the situation with you! At some point in the past couple of years (was it shortly after this group started?) I agitated both of my achilles doing some high-knee strides at the end of an otherwise same-old run. For me they did NOT resolve just like that, and I ended up taking a fair chunk of time not running. Since then I have not done anything resembling true "speed work", but every so often at the end of a run I will kick it home for the final hundred yards or so.....and one or both achilles will hurt and worry me for a few days. Thank goodness there has not been a full-blown occurrence since the more serious episode 2-3 years ago. I've seen Tina about my achilles.....but I can't remember how she treated it. I think it was working on the calves, and maybe my posterior tibial tendon; maybe? As you know, bloodflow to the achilles is very poor, so many standard therapies don't work well with the achilles. As for causes, I agree with tha mileage implication, and as for the change in terrain consideration, I say why not. My high-strides kind of qualify as change-of-terrain, or at least how I was making my legs and feet function at the time it went over the edge. I would love to be one of those off-road runners, but as I have said before, i am terrrified of the effects doing so might have on me. It's just another example of how I believe that as long as I keep within my regular range-of-motion activities, I'll be fine -- but god forbid I should skate-ski, or bowl, or kick a football, or try to throw a baseball on a line from center filed to home plate. OMG!!! ANYHOW, I like the contingency plan -- "a fun day hiking in the woods". Of course, I want it to be more for you than that - like the whole Stone Mill experience. (That's what I'm paying vicarious admission for Saturday morning! ) I too am struggling with aches -- the bunion and some metatarsal/neuroma problems. My sports doc told me to rets the bunion for a while longer; as it is, i have run once in 15 days. I can handle the layoff, it's that time of year anyhow. But of course, my injuries always get magnified mega-times in my head, and get to worry about my '11 season, even. Seriously! The little voice in my head tells me that I've gotten through all other injuries before, so why should this episode be any different, but when "in crisis" I just can't get that voice much beyond a whisper. Bah! Please drop back Saturday evening with a report (of course, ANY time you drop be here is a good thing!), as I will be fussing about you between now and then. Promise? But however Saturday turns out, I hope you have a great day and go on to have a fine old weekend. (USA Today has the Giants losing again. Oh my!) |

Way to go Lisa!! Yeah Lisa! Awesome! Cannot wait to hear the details. All set here. We're staying at a hotel in Mt. Laurel (south Jersey) tonight. Should be an easy 20 minute drive in the morning. Weather still holding strong. I'm setting up a perfect iPod playlist right now. Planning on going out with the 4 hour pace group, then trying to pick it up for the second half. That's what I did at CIM last year - started with the 4:15 group, picked it up after mile 14, finished at 4:10. I would like a similar result tomorrow This is the first time I've ever really ran with a hard time goal before. I can't say that I'll make it - but I'm going to give it a good shot And if I don't? We'll try again in a few months! Congrats Lisa - and Neil, best of luck! I'll be thinking of you - pre-dawn transition set up when I start, and how you'll be swimming when I finish. It'll be like passing off a baton For Steve, Mindy and Lisa - tracking from the safety of their homes, I'm number 6951... I'm not sure if they have online tracking updates though? |

While I blanched-n-bailed (wisely, it turns out) at extending my training to prepare for B2B this year, on Nov. 13, the end of October is doable for me doing the half. Probably not pleasant, but doable. It would be my last long ride before the 15th, and then tapering that part down for a couple of weeks. About the same for the last OWS, although that would stop even earlier and would not be a full 1.2 miles. |
