Good luck Lovey, just do whatever you are the most comfortable with.  We'll be looking for a race report on Monday Smile

Lovey, overheating is my first concern.

But if you feel most comfortable in it, then wear it. You will be swimming slow anyway so I think you will avoid the overheating. And your goal is not to place, it's to gain confidence and finish.

Whatever you decide- have a great race.

I can't wait for Monday.   I'll be looking for a race report on Sunday night.

Take your wet suit with you and let it be a game day decision.  Do whatever you are feeling.  My first tri, I had signed up for a time trial start to the swim and then changed to the mass start.  Its all about your comfort level on that day.  I have to admit, I love my wetsuit.  I've only done 1 tri without it.  I have overheated at one tri though and that is not fun. Really makes you slow on the bike when you can't see because you feel like you are going to pass out.  Not good.

Think of your tri as separate races.  1st-survive the swim.  Once that is done, celebrate!  Breathe a sigh of relief then get on the bike.  Survive the bike and just spin easily up the hills, don't pound. They make granny gears for a reason, us. Celebrate surviving the bike and then the fun begins, just run.  Be happy, you just have a 5k to run and you are done. WOO HOO!!

Good Luck and we'll all be cyber-cheering for you!

My goal is to gain confidence and finish.
I have to decide which is better: an earlier start, or the flotation of the wetsuit?

I think the earlier start would be better than waiting until the end. I will swim without a wetsuit BUT if by a fluke of nature the weather cools and the water is cold, I will use it. I will still pack it.

There is a practice swim tomorrow at the race site so I am going to go for a short swim with no wetsuit.

Sorry for disappearing after my race. You can read my long race report for details but here is a summary.

I survived the swim!! I was terrified, panic attack when I jumped in the water but calmed down before the horn. Freestyle to each buoy (100 meter apart) then breaststroke for a few strokes to rest then freestyle to the next buoy and so on. I chose to skip the wetsuit and go with my wave.

The bike was a nice ride with great views. Definitely a much easier ride than what Iron Girl is going to be. I enjoyed it.

The run was good with 2 hills both of which I walked.

SWIM: 45:38
T1: 5:53
BIKE: 1:03:28
T2: 5:05
RUN: 1:08:35
TOTAL TIME: 3:08:39

I made my two goals of:
1. survive the swim - done
2. complete the race - done

Now to push harder on the next one.

Joyce - Celebration Sprint news:

As of 7:00 am EDT on June 21, 2010, the water temperature in Centennial Lake was 83° F.

the Potomac River was 81 degrees and I thought the temp was perfect. With this unusual heat we are having, a lot of races have warm water temps.

Sorry to hear about your hubby. I hope feels better and the sugery goes well.

Joyce, just a heads up:
Wetsuits disallowed for Celebration Sprint
Friday, 25 Jun 2010
As of Wednesday, June 23rd, at 6:30am, the water in Centennial Lake was 84 degrees F. Extreme heat is expected on race day with air temperatures in the 90's and high humidity dominating the weather. Heat advisories are expected. Therefore, race management, in consultation with the medical team, has determined that WETSUITS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES as their use would constitute a clear medical and safety danger (hyperthermia) . Those wearing wetsuits will NOT be allowed to start.
However, athletes may use a USAT-approved skinsuit or speedsuit. For details on USAT-approved skinsuits and speedsuits for use in any water temperature, see USAT's complete list.
OUR GOAL IS TO KEEP YOU SAFE WHILE PROVIDING A GREAT RACE EXPERIENCE.

Sorry to hear that.  I know he's really been fighting this for a while.  Hope this finally gets it taken care of and he can get back to doing what he wants to do.

GREAT JOB, LOVEY!

Thanks for the updates too on the Celebration Sprint.... guess that wetsuits gonna have to stay in the closet til the Fall (assuming I ever do another one of these... lol)

I'm getting the butterflies in my stomach, you know......keep telling myself "I'm ready"

My goals this time are to survive too!  Don't know if there is a chance to find each other there, but I'm staying at the Sheraton...gonna drive down early Saturday morning and catch the 1pm talk.

Thanks, Lovey...

I am planning to swim in my biking shorts and a jogging bra... is that weird?  That way, I just have to throw on a lightweight jersey for the bike and run...I figure it'll help me stay cool.

What do you think?

Is it regular biking shorts or tri shorts?
I have only swam in trishorts and I couldnt tell if they were wet. My regular bike shorts padding is thick that it would feel like I am wearing a wet diaper. If youve swam in it in the pool and it felt ok then go ahead. Nothing new on race day.

I will try to stop by the Sheraton on Saturday. I am going to get some new running shoes after my kids swim meet ends around noon. I will stop on the way and look for you.

Are you staying overnight?
Are you going to pack the wetsuit just in case?

JOYCE-

my first tri season I always swam in bike shorts and a sports bra. Yes, the padding gets wet, but it squeezes out during your bike and will be dry by your run. Good idea!

Then, if you decide to do more triathlons, buy some tri shorts. I finally bought some this season.

Good luck to both of you next weekend!!! I am not dropping out of my races but am worried about fitting in training.

I did a 5K this morning.
My friend picked up my packet for me yesterday. Neither of us verify the contents of the race bag. Today, I just put on my bib and went to the race. When I checked the wall at the race for results, I noticed my name or number wasn't there.

It was not until I unpacked the race bag after I got home from the race that I noticed that it wasn't my name on the envelope or the bib!! I checked the results for the name on the bib and her name wasnt there either.

It was really hot, in the 80s. I was on pace until mile 2 when I felt sick and queasy in my stomach. I had to take reall deeep breaths not to throw up at the end because m stomach was so queasy. I wasnt going faster than my normal pace but a queas stomach and high heat wasnt going well for me.

I emailed the race coordinator.

Oh, Lovey!  I wish I saw this before the race... I didn't realize you were stopping by the Sheraton. I would have looked for you too.

The shorts i used were biking shorts without any padding.  they worked well.  And instead of a jogging bra, I opted for more coverage in another tank I have that is coolmax with a built in bra.

Sorry to hear about feeling queasy during your run.  That happened to me SO much during training.  I found that I have to avoid eating anything for 2-3 hours before I work out, and only to do gels and gatorade diluted at 50%.  It sounds like the heat may have gotten you.  Have you ever felt queasy before?  Hey, just getting out there and doing it in the heat is a victory!  Good job!

That stinks about the bib mix up.  I don't know how these race coordinators do it.

I really feel bad about not knowing about meeting you on Saturday.  I would have loved it.  The event was really fun.... and over half of us were women... and over 48% first timers!

I just love vacation bible school. I get to drop my kids off and go get my exercise on. For the first time in almost 3 months, I will get a full week of consistent workouts.

First time back in the pool since my tri. In my tri, it took me 45 slow minutes to do 850 yards using freestyle. Today I did 1000 yards in 50 minutes. A slight improvement since I alternated each length with freestyle and breaststroke. My breaststroke is even slower than my freestyle.
Alternating strokes allowed me to not be as tired. My arms were still a little tired from my lunch hour bodysculpt class.

1x600
rest 30 seconds
1x300
rest 30 seconds
1x100
TOTAL - 1000 yards (pool closed)

Because of my work schedule and end of year school activities, I only got to week 4 (sort of) in my "Swim Zero to One Mile" program. What I really got to was doing 800 yards nonstop.
Today I restarted at week 4 but didn't finish because the pool closed. Even then I wonder if I would have been able to push myself further.

My next Iron Girl tri is a lake swim of 1100 yards on august 22. That gives me about 7 weeks to master the distance, improve my strok and definitely get some speed. There is a strict 1 hour limit on the swim at Iron Girl. They will pull you out.

Below is week 3 and 4 workouts. Should I back track to week 3 or push thru on week 4 or maybe focus on doing just the 1000 yard set of week 5?

WEEK three:
400 yards...rest for 12 breaths
200 yards...rest for 10 breaths
4 x 100 yards...rest for 8 breathsbetween 100s
4 x 50 yards...rest for 4 breaths between 50s
total: 1200 yards

WEEK four:
600 yards...rest for 10 breaths
300 yards...rest for 8 breaths
4 x 100 yards...rest for 6 breaths between 100s
4 x 50 yards...rest for 4 breaths between 50s
total: 1500 yards

WEEK five:
1000 yards...rest for 8 breaths
4 x 100 yards...rest for 4 breaths between 100s
4 x 50 yards...rest for 4 breaths between 50s
total: 1600 yards
