I am planning on participating in the Pacific Crest Half Ironman June 2011. So I have a good 25 weeks of prep time. I have run many races, swimming and biking will be new for me though. I am excited about the challenge and so looking forward to doing something new. Laura Welcome, Laura! Thanks for joining us! |

Elite 3223 Hendersonville | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group lalexander - 2010-12-25 1:52 AM Thanks JG - I ended up doing the run right after the swim due to time constraints. I felt good while doing it but I was definitely whooped at the end! To your point, I set the incline to 2.5%. Hopefully I got an accurate result! Actually, I am concerned that you did NOT get an accurate result because your incline was too high. The 1.0% is meant to mimic running a flat course outside. While doing a test, you should try to find a relatively flat course for best results. The 2.5% you used meant that you did a test on a completely uphill course. If you find that your numbers don't feel right as you start training with HR, you may need to test again using 1.0% incline or outside if at all possible. |

This group will connect you with others starting or already training on this plan. Post your introduction, background, ask questions and get motivated! Hi Starting training today for 1/2 IM. Its on 14th May. Done one olympic to date, 2.36hrs, what time should i reasonably expect for 1/2IM? BTW I'm 47 ....... Welcome! Thanks for joining us. It's very hard to predict what your time will be this far out from the race. Assuming you follow the training pretty strictly, you should expect a competitive time based on your Oly time of 2:36. Once you get 1-2 months out from the race it should be much easier to predict a finish time, but you never know...so many variables. I think it's best on general to focus on finishing as strong as possible any time you are trying a race distance for the first time, rather than trying to accomplish a time goal. Save the time goals for your 2nd HIM. |

Member 28 Foster City, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group Wow - good to know. Thanks Jessica. The problem is that my body tends to adapt to whatever I throw at it so I won't know if the numbers don't feel right. As I think through this, wouldn't I increase my speed to achieve the same "all-out effort", and therefore achieve similar results? I can certainly re-take the test to compare the results, but shoot, that means I need to re-take the test... Edited by lalexander 2010-12-27 2:52 PM |

Veteran 266 Mandeville, la | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group Ive done a few sprints in the last three yrs. But after watching the Hawaii Ironman race a couple weekends ago, i got inspired by a certain 40+ mom that trained and finished her first ironman. So that following week I did some research on HIM races in the U.S. And i desided to find, sign up and commit myself in training, and achieving one of my bucket list items. To do my first HIM by the end of 2011. Im happy to say ive found one in Wilmington, NC and have signed up for it. And on top of that found a great coach near me to assist me in my training. Im so excited and modivated that anyone can compete in an ironman..half or full. If properly trained anyone can do one. So I plan to come to this forum often to get any tips, tricks and advice in preparing myself for this race. It might be over ten months away..but still I have it in my mindset that I CAN!... rock on for all that plan to do the same this coming new yr. Cheers Dawn |

Regular 103 Alameda, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group I did a 4mile run with strides a few hours ago. It was a 40 minute workout. Oddly whenever I do 20 second strides I always end up running faster during my non-stride times. It said to go RPE 2 or 3 during the non-stride times, but I end up going at like RPE 6-7. Dunno why, but oh well. I also have a swim workout today. It said 40 minutes so I expected to see the normal 3x500 with some warmup and cooldown, but instead it is 4x200 warmup, 1x1500 main, and a regular cooldown. Wow, I have never swam 1500m freestyle continously before. Hopefully it goes well. I'll report back later. |

Guess I will have to count today as my rest day and go strong tomorrow. What did you all get done today? My brother is in town from Zurich, CH and is an awesome runner. He is a sub 3 marathon guy and just an all around fun guy to be around, and we ran together. Left me in the dust. Was too cold and windy for outside but we went to the gym and got on treadmills next to eachother to do intervals. He did stepups from 7mph-11mph with 4 min at each, then down, with warm up and cool down both at 7. His workout lasted 41min and ran 6.8mi, I tried to keep up, but ran like 5.2 in the same time. Was supposed to swim but am gonna do it tomorrow, I was just too happy to see him not to run! |

Tried to use it today but it wouldn't work with my brother wearing one on the treadmill right next to me. I was picking up his heart beat! Doing an outdoor run tomorrow and excited to use it for sure |

Regular 103 Alameda, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group Awesome JG, I love my garmin. Have fun with it! Well I just got back from the gym and did my first freestyle mile ever! I'm pretty happy I was able to do it since I haven't been swimming too often. But to be fair I used to be on a swim team when I was growing up. I did the mile in 34:12, does anyone have any clue if that is good or horrible? I figure it probably isn't too great since it was my first mile, but if anyone has any comparison I could do it to, that would be great. On to tomorrow's run and bike. |

Not sure how old you are but looking at the past results from Cali 70.3 for men age 30-34 the swim times range between 26min-40min. |

Regular 103 Alameda, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group Had a good swim today. That's all that was on my agenda...so I guess it was a pretty light day. Yesterday I had a 30 min run and 1 hr bike. Well it was downpouring so I jumped on the trainer. Yet again, it wasn't very great, but it was better than the last few times. I only managed 30 minutes. I'll tack on the rest of the bike on the next bike workout outside. I figured out why my hands were so sore. When I bike outside the bike is level, so I just had to angle the nose of my saddle up slightly to not put so much weight on my hands. But on the trainer, even with the block for the front tire, it still is at a decline, which puts weight on my hands. I'll get a book or something to put under it to make it more level. After I lose more weight I doubt it will be an issue. |

Expert 732 | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group For some reason I do just fine indoor biking. Had a nice 40min trainer ride today, used my new Garmin 405CX to check my intervals/HR patterns. Also tried running on my brothers minimalist shoes, Saucony Kinvara's, for five minutes or so on the treadmill. Ran very well and loved how light they were, but I think I am maybe a month or two away from being able to run full time on even shoes like that. |
