My first Tri:

Swim: 8:04mins
T1: 4:01mins (1/4mile)
Bike: 52:27mins (15miles)
T2: 2:08mins
Run: 35:51mins (5k)
Total: 1:42:38

I placed 51 out of 53 in my age group (30-34 year olds).

Overall it feel good about my time. I was disappointed with my run bc my I kept cramping above my glutes. So I would have to stop and stretch so many times. The run to T1 was like 450yards and my age group rack was at the very end, so that is why it is so long.

Then after the bike my legs were so numb! They have never felt that way before, lol. Then I got to the race super early and had a nice spot. But after the bike there was a late comer who crammed right in my spot. So when I was trying to rack my bike, his bike (very nice and expensive) started to fall, so I caught it multiple times before successfully racking my bike.

Overall, I was happy with my performance and know where I need to improve and have something to compare to my next race!

This record breaking 100 degree heat needs to go.  For the last four days the heat index has been in the triple digits around here.  Normally we are in the 80's.  I managed to get my brick in, but I ended up only doing six miles of the twelve mile trail run I had planned.  I'm pretty sure when I finished that I would have been drier stepping directly out of the pool.  We now return you to you regularly scheduled programming.

That's really quite respectable...but I can't believe that you were only 51 out of 53!  That's some pretty stiff competition.

That whole transition rack thing is quite common.  I haven't run in to that in a while, but there will always be someone arriving late who believes they have a God given right to the best rack, even if it's already full.

When running REALLY sucks after the bike....it's a good indicator that you need more biking in your training.  But I don't see anything about your performance that you should be dissatisfied about.

Everyone, I had a crappy weekend after my ride up to the lake on Sat. morning.  Well, a crappy tri weekend anyway.

The short version is that I didn’t get any other S/B/R in, and my Achilles is now sore even walking.  The long version involves a tree branch accident, some minor boat problems, a work blow up, and some other whiney details.

The Achilles isn’t debilitating, just sore which it hasn’t been before other than right after running lately.  I have a 5k scheduled for Thursday, and my tri is in two weeks.  I am scheduled to see my ART guy tomorrow, so hopefully he’ll find and work out something in my calf, but I’m just frustrated.  Should I at least try to bike through this (biking doesn’t seem to bother it at all) and see where the races lead me?

That's interesting.  After my Saturday race I took Sunday completely off and lounged around the house all day.  That felt great!  But my achilles became more sore yesterday and this morning than it's been in weeks.  I actually believe it got more sore due to the inactivity.  This morning's run has seemed to relieve much of the pain.  I wonder if inactivity allows mild swelling to become increased.

You might want to try a slow, gentle jog today and see if it has a positive affect.

Definitely get on the bike.  It does a lot of good for my achilles soreness.  Just make sure that your cleats on your shoes are as far back on the shoe as they go.  (putting your heel closer to the pedal).  This alleviates most of the tension on the calf/achilles.

Thanks!

The fasted time was 1:07 and the slowest was 1:47. Here is a link for my AG results:

http://www.accustatsportstiming.com/results3.asp?ei=93

It was also a pretty big race. It was estimated there were over 900 people were there between the tri/du/5k, etc.

T1 sounds like another run!.  Some transition areas are like that.  Great race overall - get us a race report!  The first one is in the books, making you a TRIATHLETE! Congrats, welcome to the addiction.

Nice race.  Feels great to be able to push that hard and do something that a lot of people talk about but never do.  Walk a little taller, you've earned it.  Congratulation.

As Jonathon and Warren said, "YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE!"  Start jumping around a little.  Get excited.  Theres no turning back and only looking forward.  You can pride yourself in not being a couch potato and becoming more fit.  Speed comes with time and more commitment and there is all kinds of time to get there.

Congrats on an awesome race and a great experience!

So today is national ice cream day, that being said I've had a habit of eating ice cream every night before I go to bed. I recently started eating sherbet. It has a lot less fat and still gives me that cool treat at the end of the day.

I have my first Olympic triathlon of the season on Saturday. Bad news, I hurt my Achilles last Monday after a 5 mile run. It started getting tight at the end of the run and I shut it down. I thought it wouldn't be a problem and I went for a brick on Friday, 4 days rest from running and after the bike it was not having it. Since then I've been icing, stretching, and doing exercises. Now I'm unsure how hard I can push it on the triathlon. I've gone bike riding and swimming fine so we'll see how I feel into T2. I'm not one for a DNF next to my name so I'm hoping it relaxes and hangs on.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for Ben & Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk.  If it's in the house, I'll eat it in a couple days...if not in one sitting.  IT'S SUCH A SMALL PINT!

Ryan....that's a tough one man.  Keep on icing and stretching.  Do a good warmup on raceday so it doesn't tighten up too much.  You think the bike ride will be enough to loosen it up for the run?

I also have a race on Sunday...a sprint.  I'm honestly not sure how the swim waves go because they aren't listed.  I also have no idea how fast I swim in my wetsuit now.  I'm pretty confident, but should I just be going out hard and waiting for a faster person to come up so I can get on their feet?  I'm pretty sure I can get out in front of the whole field in the first 100m or so, but there's obviously no way I can hold that pace for the whole race.  I am not quite confident that I can hold onto the fastest persons feet either....maybe one of the top ten guys.  Any suggestions?  My previous method had always been just go out reasonably hard and hold the pace until I found someone faster about half way through.

Wow, it's great to hear this from you.  I thought I was alone on this obsession.  I eat a ridiculous bowl of ice cream almost every night.  My wife keeps buying it, so I'm just doing my duty to keep the freezer clear.

That blows. I'd guess you just have to see what it feels like off the bike, and make a judgment call.  That would be a full week of no running, so hopefully it will heal enough to get through 6.2.  After that you may want to really take care of it though - I know some untreated Achilles injuries can get really ugly really fast.  You don't want to be here a year from now dealing with a chronic pain deal.

I'm battling some Achilles pain, not as severe as yours but it's going to keep me away from running except for races for at least a few weeks.  I have a 5k planned for tomorrow evening, and I really don't want to blow it off.  ART guy thinks it's ok to do it - I'm thinking I'll give it a whirl and then stay off running until the tri in 10 days.

Sometimes I'll eat an entire half gallon of Breyers in one sitting.  But I need the calories to keep from wasting away...

It's one of the secret weapons in my nutritional arsenal.

Let's all eat ice cream!

Notice that Dirk is pretty fast?  See the six pack in his profile picture?  It's all due to ice cream.

English NAZI!

In terms of the race, I'd say get out there and avoid the scrum and draft the #2 swimmer.  Your swim puts you so far out in the front why not live on the edge?  When you run like we do, you have to build on your strengths!

At least you can get ahead on the swim and bike and try to hang on for the run.  Good luck, and rock it.  That looks like an awesome location.

Yeah...I may just do that Warren.  There's always a #1 guy that nobody can catch.  The guy swimming like 1:05 or something for the whole distance.  The chase pack of guys will be right around 1:15-1:20 I'm sure.  I'll see if I can hold that.  Yes, I did just refer to it as a chase pack....as if this sprint is the world championship or something.

I weighed in this morning at 187....I'm planning on eating healthy for the rest of the week until the race.  Just something I do to clean out the system I guess.  After the race I can't really eat, but when I get home Sunday night I'm going to teach Ben & Jerry a lesson they won't forget.

I am liking the idea of the official name of the group changing to "THE Ice cream Dream Team."  My fav is a local thing.  Zesto is a neighborhood type place that has an incredible flavor.  I always get the cookie dough "Razzle" made with yogurt because the yogurt is just a little sweeter.  And they put huge amounts of cookie dough in the cup.

I have actually only had Zesto once since it opened this spring BUT I am getting an itch for it right now.  I also tried the DQ flavor, Caramel Toffee cookie.  That was pretty awesome too, but it didn't have enough cookie dough in it.
