Veteran 1019 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread tuwood - 2012-08-08 11:31 AM Highway 92 should be opened back up before the race. So we'll just have one long climb in to Mt. Horeb, but it's not terribly steep. Though you will definitely be hating it the second time around. melle - 2012-08-07 2:29 PM So we are all on the same page, I will be happy with 17-18mph average for the ride. Keep that in mind when judging ability, I'm slow. With that in mind here's my description of the two options for the hwy 92 detour. Both, IMHO, are much tougher then staying on hwy 92. TH - crappy roads, several medium size climbs and one huge (steep, not long) downhill where you can coast to 40-50mph, followed immediately by a steep climb. I actually got a little nervous on the descent, that has never happened before. Malone - feels like one non-stop climb. A couple of short downhills that are not much of a brake. One longer downhill that leads to the final climb back up to Mount Horeb. I prefer this route over TH because the roads are a little better. When mapped out individually, TH adds 3 class 5 climbs and Malone adds 2. When added to the full map neither one has a classifiable climb. When measuring from the end of Messerschmidt Malone is longer and has more climbing (approx 20 ft) with very little recovery time. TH is just a pain, literally and figuratively, in the A*#. Malone will also allow you to make the trip through Mount Horeb. TH will cause you to miss it completely. Sorry if it was mentioned earlier. Is this detour just for riding the course now, or is it going to be in effect on race day as well? |

Extreme Veteran 451 Algonquin, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread cjr222 - 2012-08-08 11:00 AM Thanks for the heads up, a sticky mess for 112 miles would by annoying. Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but are those bottles of perform available at the beginning before the race to load up your bike or are you suppose to use your own at the start? Just thinking why throw away two decent bottles when I'm going to get cheap disposable bottles in return. I know water will be available. Don't know about Perform. You probably will not need to load up since there are more refueling stations than you will need. I forget what the distance is between them, but definitely more than enough. I have taken my down post bottle carriers off the bike and just gone with the two on the seat and the one with the straw in the handlebars. I try to keep the handlebar one full when I pass through stations and pick up an extra if needed. The other bottle is my fuel for the ride.... 10 or 12 scoops of Hammer Perpetuem. This has worked for me. Of course if you want to carry 5 bottles, thats up to you. not saying that I have ever seen anyone do that.. ok.. yes I have. |

Regular 57 Boulder, CO | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread I'm doing MOO (aren't we all in this thread?) and it turns out my family, who're coming from about 90min away, would like to stay to see me run in. That will be _late_. Last year I didn't make it -- crashed at mile 100 on the bike and got an ambulance ride and a couple days in the hospital with some broken body parts instead of a chance to make it to the finish line. Last year my family watched, but went home as planned after the ride (which was just as well, as I couldn't be seen on the run course :-). There are no hotel rooms showing up in Madison at all. The hotel where we're staying said they thought there'd be some rooms for that weekend freed up yesterday, but there weren't. Does anyone know of somewhere in (preferable downtown) Madison I can get my family a couple of rooms for the 8th-10th? Are there hotels where rooms should free up soon because people are cancelling for that weekend? My dad is an old farmer who could use a nap during the day, and they can use our room downtown during the race, but it'd be great if they could stay downtown as well. Thanks |

Welcome to the broken wannabe ironman club. As a new member let me introduce myself. I'm Mike and so far this season (starting in late may) I have had a torn calf muscle, diagnosed with stage 2 hypertension with reduced kidney function (now on high blood pressure medication) and last week I crashed my moped and broke a bone in my foot (pictures in my profile/blog thing). Other than that training has gone very well. On a brighter side, in 4.5 weeks we will all be Ironmen, albeit not as quickly as initially anticipated. |

Who is peaking next week? I am! 6 hr bike, 3 hr run, and 75 ows scheduled. Wondering if anyone wanted to get together on the course or around the area to train? Not Dodgeville! Walinda |

Yep, it's a tough course. I've done the 150K the last three years, but opted out to do the REV3 HIM Aquabike instead. Lot of hills up here too! Rest up and enjoy your peak week! |

16 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread A couple of first timer questions.
1. Im staying at the Doubletree Hilton. I will have Zero family or support. As far as getting to the venue race morning, should I plan on driving or would hailing a cab be easier (wasn't sure of the parking situation?)? 2. As far as post race, can you pick-up your bike Mon. Morning or how will that go for me getting it back to hotel? 3. When your coming up the terrace with your wetsuit, just curious as to where you put your wetsuit so as to find it post race? Do you place it next to your bike in transition? Thanks everyone.

Wetsuit goes in your bag inside T1 (not by your bike). You pick those bags up after the race. |

I think there will be a main parking lot for people to park at with a shuttle back and forth from the finish line. I think you have to pick up your bike that night. you would likely be able to fit your bike into the trunk of a cab - they have massive trunks. I used to have to take my bike places by cab before I had a car in university. (by places, I mostly mean the lbs). your wetsuit gets put into your T1 bag, which you will pick up with your bike. (and T2 bag) |

1. Im staying at the Doubletree Hilton. I will have Zero family or support. As far as getting to the venue race morning, should I plan on driving or would hailing a cab be easier (wasn't sure of the parking situation?)? The shuttle won't do you any good, it's coming from a whole other area. I'm staying about a block west of you and I just plan on walking. What's another mile? If you don't want to walk, a cab is a better bet. Otherwise you'll be fighting through a lot of closed off streets. 2. As far as post race, can you pick-up your bike Mon. Morning or how will that go for me getting it back to hotel? You have to pick up your bike after the race. They actually say by midnight, but there's obviously a little leeway with that. 3. When your coming up the terrace with your wetsuit, just curious as to where you put your wetsuit so as to find it post race? Do you place it next to your bike in transition? With Ironman, everything is in your transition bags. You can't store anything at your bike, not even shoes or a helmet. If you manage to get a volunteer in T1 (depending on when you're there it can be pretty crowded) they will pack up your swim gear in your bag after you've left. Otherwise just stuff it all in your bag and take off. Thanks everyone.

Same here. I have a room at the clarion suites @ alliant energy center. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Won't be needing it so it's open to anyone who wants/needs a room. 2.5 miles to the race site. |

After your race, you'll need to pick up your bike, transitions bags, and your dry clothes bag that you'll drop off the morning of the race. Volunteers will have tied your three bags together and they will fetch them for you. Monday morning you can go pick up your special needs bags if you want them. You're on your own to dig through the piles to find them. |

New user 40 Chicago | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Rode the course this weekend with a detour via Town Hall. Kind of liked the new (compared to 2010) route via the Messerschmidt Rd (much better than the piece on HWY 92 where it would go otherwise). Town Hall piece was pretty nice too ... the race day will be easy compared to training. Back for more next weekend and then Taper time! |

Does anyone know if we can get the special needs bags back? Yes, you can search through all of them on Monday morning. They put them out in boxes in front of the Terrace. They do a reasonable job of getting them in some order based on your bib #, but it is messy to dig through the rubble. I got both of mine back last year. |

Probably Friday You can go in anytime, but like Rob suggested, it is best to do it very early due to boat traffic and ski practice. Our group is usually out there at first light, 5:45am ish. My PSA is don't go alone even earlyt. We have a lot of fishermen on the lakes before dawn. |
