Temps are going to drop to low 40s (wind chill in low 30s with winds in excess of 20 mph) for my bike ride tomorrow morning, and to low 30s for my swim (outdoor pool) wednesday morning....BRRRRR

Any advice from my cold friends up north? What do you wear for a bike ride?  Guess for most of you this will qualify as good weather, but I have NO cold gear, so planning to wear a light sweater or windbreaker with my usual shorts. Actually, more concerned with the winds than the temp, I think I will be practicing staying in my drops a lot. Its going to be a fun ride!

Samy, if its too cold for the Wed. swim, I would recommend replacing it with a bike ride or a run.  In Florida cold spells don't last too long and missing one swim won't affect you vs. the alternative of getting sick...

Thanks Gabriel, thought about it and will run tomorrow. I think that during the run I will pretend we are going up "The Hill" during winter time...those walks were never painful (although alcohol might have been involved).

PS: "The Hill" is fraternity row at Lehigh university, a place were Sir Gabriel and yours truly spend many a nights before joining this healthy lifestyle.

You're very welcome Jen, I actually tried many saddles before I chose those two. But also keep in mind that the saddle is probably the most rider specific part of the bike, everybody has different bottoms to put it nicely. Women's saddles should be ALL split design to be able to use the sitbones and not the soft tissue. At least that is what I hear from all the girls that I ride with and those girls put some serious miles in, they also swear by the "hoo-ha ride glide" chamois which is also very specific for girls. One day (please spare the laughs) I used it myself because I forgot my Butt'r chamois and I found it not greasy and refreshing. I guess I don't use it for the obvious reasons... Laughing

Ernesto:

Would those two saddles (ISM or John Cobb) work even for road bikes without aerobars? Don't feel comfortable enough with my control of the bike to add aerobars just yet, and was wondering if the saddles are good for regular road bikes or are better for tri-bikes.

Samy- I ride a road bike and for Christmas Scott bought me clip on aero barsaero bars (it was that or a new Coach purse).  Ernesto had recommended those saddles and I believe one is on his road bike.  The local bike shop that I go to, knowing the bike I have also recommended those two saddles for comfort and fit.  I looked them up online and it is an investment for thousands of miles...  Not positive which I'm going to order but the guy and the bike shop also has the John Cobb and even though he can't order it for me, he recommended it.  Even if you aren't in areo bars now you will be soon enough.

See now we are getting the dirt.  I better be careful though.... Scott and I have been friends since high school...  He was a runner then and when I tweaked my ankle...  I was just trouble... LOL...

When I started base training (141-151) in November, I had a blazing 13:00 pace. I was cheaping away and saw 11:30s a few weeks ago.  Now, I'm back in the 12:15-12:30. GRRR...it's going the wrong way.  I ran 16 yesterday and avg 149 with a 12:00.  I'm eating the same, weather conditions are the same, I'm not sick.  What could it be?  I just started reading the Big Book.  Is the answer in there?

Man....these challenge posts buried my post about base training.  I had to resurrect it.  Anybody have any advice?

How long have you been at it? It can take three weeks of consistent 180-age heart rate training for the effect to kick in. And it can be inconsistent in between then.

And, yes, the answer is in there.

Sorry, missed that. 141-151 is a big range. What is 180-age for you? There are also adjustments you possibly need to make to add or subtract from that. (It's in the book.)

I second that..  The answer is in the book.  When I started I wanted to cry.  I ran a sub 7min 1 mile and then gave into the book.  I was running in California at a blazing 15min pace to keep my heart rate in check I would have to walk any elevation.  Then I moved to Colorado Springs and had to start all over.  Not everyone will be text book to the 180-age.  I'm a bit off right now because to run anywhere I face 5% inclines and the altitude adjustment.  It's been six months that I've been here and still some days require a bit of walking.  Keep at it.  You are not alone and it will pay off!!!

146 if I use 180-age.  I know that is formula to get you in the ball park.  I did a 30 minute lactate threshold field test where I went all out.  Avg HR was 172.  I used Joe Friel's formula and Z2 was 141-151.

Can I squeeze in here?  I actually started about 2 weeks ago.  I'm only down 2lbs since then, which is about how I want to do it.  I'm cutting about 300 calories a day, hopefully will work out to be a lb. a week.  I'll start here with my weight on the 1st.....

I had a good indoor trainer bike ride tonight after work (Spinervals 5.0).  23.03 miles in 1:26:20.  I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever averaged 16 mph for that workout so I think that's a good sign.  Hopefully the legs will be able to manage tomorrow's hill running workout.

Last 2 questions Ernesto and Jackie

Jackie you mentioned having a ISM saddle.  how do you like it?

I was going to jump in and just get the John Cobb Vflow Plus but I keep toggling back and forth between that and the ISM Prologue.  Both seem like great saddles but it is turning out to be a real tough choice.  I also found the ISM on ebay for $135 but that would eliminate all chances of return.

Ernesto- Tomorrow is my hill training.  Last week I didn't use my lap and once I uploaded the workout discovered I ran most at a sub 8min pace but I could only hold it on the hill (7% incline) for 60 seconds.  For the 10k, my goal is to get as close to 50minutes as possible but to be honest anything under 54minutes would make me thrilled!  What pace should I be running the hills and for how long (60sec to 90sec)? Planning on 7 repeats, if that helps.

I am on-call tonight so only had time for 30 minute swim between office and going on call.  to try to get in a bit extra for strength and calorie burn,  i attempted to do a crossfit session in clean utility room.  While doing box jumps using preemie formula boxes as platform a nurse came in -- ooops -- rather embarrassing.

Jen, I love the ISM Adamo race saddle.  Before I got it, I was really getting a lot of chafing in the front.  Hoo Ha Ride Glide didn't work for me at all.  I use Buttr.

Cason, it's in the book.  It was very frustrating for all of us Maffetone converts.  Go back and look at our last two mentoring archives.  We were all griping about having to SLOW WAY DOWN.

Woohoo, this is fun!
