Subject: RE: Matt Gilmartin's Group- CLOSED~ we're swimming!

I've been having some issues post work out with gut aches lately.  I'm having a hard time pinning down the exact cause, but I have a feeling it might be the fish oil supplements I started taking a couple weeks ago.  I'll finish a workout and start to recover and within 10 minutes or so I have this terrible pain in my gut - well below my stomach.  I'm pretty sure it's not what I eat since I've been working with the Paleo Diet for a couple months now and have adjusted well.  Not the timing of my meals either since I'm fairly vigilant about spacing meals and training.

Anyone else have similar issues or ideas on what may be causing this?

It's the weekend!  Whew - what a week at work (but that would be a different forum!).  Got out of bed at 5:30 AM thinking I am in over my head (swim joke) in going to the local tri-team workout in the pool.  I am no longer the slowest of the slow.  The slow are getting faster and so am I but just enough that I notice and am encouraged.

I worked hard on form and technique this week but in the hour long workouts the endurance isn't there yet but I come away feeling great!

I did get the Zoomer gold fins and they are fun but a little tight across the metatarsals on one foot.  I have found that I kick when I have the fins (because it is fun, and I go faster) but without the fins I have to concentrate to kick.

I also have been experimenting with the pool bouy and it seems that when it adds to my "natural" bouancy (sp?) I start tipping to one side or the other.  Must look ridiculous but I must be doing something wrong.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!!  Melinda

P.S. You're scaring me Catie....I don't want to be swum over!!!

Just got done with a long afternoon swim of 3000 meters. Long for me at least. I didn't get my Zoomers yet and I worked on swimming more with my arms and less leg. My shoulders are a little tired but not bad. I also worked at maintaining a workout and not slacking at the end of the lane. I'm still exceptionally slow but the endurance is getting better. I'm certain the speed will come once I can do more than two laps without being winded I was planning a long run yesterday but the snowstorm thwarted those plans. I might get lucky tomorrow and take the mountain bike out on the gravel roads but the snowpacked pavement isn't going to see the tri bike anytime soon.

Drove to the site of our tri being held next weekend and oh-my-goodness!! That swim is going to be ridiculous! The water was SO choppy and cold and I have to swim a 750 in this?!?! It was also CRAZY windy and they are expecting wind gusts of 20mph. What was I thinking trying to do a tri this early in the season? (oh, that's right, I only have to May before we move and I may not have my bike for a month or two while it's being shipped)

Heading out for a 10-miler with my half marathon training group this morning.  It's a balmy 20 degrees here in the nation's capital with 20mph winds.  Most rational people are snuggled under their covers right now.  This is definitely going to be a shock to the system---gonna layer up with 2 pairs of running tights and my under armour cold weather top as well as gloves and a hat.  Should be fine once we start moving---the hard part is getting out the door because I really despise cold weather.  Been a pretty good week---work wasn't too insane and I managed to make it to masters swim practice twice and squeeze some runs in.  Need to spend some more time on my bike this week.  Went to the movies with my family last night and saw a cheesy movie with The Rock---Journey to something or other.  It was painfully lame but wonderful to have some family time.  Hope that popcorn isn't a lump in my stomach during this morning's run!  Catie, I never got a chance to thank you for the time you took to tell us all about your first tri experience.  You write very well and you really got me thinking about some of the things to expect.  Looking forward to hearing how everyone else is doing.

Robin - Good on you for getting out there even though the weather was less than inviting!

My husband, son and I did a Spinervals video indoors since it is really cold and was sleeting earlier. We did 19.0 Bending Crank Arms. It was a 50 minute interval session with off and on bike strength sets (a lot of squats and I added in some planks). Now it's time for a shower and then dinner!

Hope everyone has a great Monday and some great training workouts!!

Christian, how much fish oil are you taking?  How much time is there between your run and your taking the supplement?  I wouldn't think that fish oil could cause stomach pain in and of itself~ I've been taking two pills a day for years without issue.  Stomach pain during running is ultra-common as I'm sure you know- anything else change that you can think of?  You're in Iowa so I know it's cold- how much water are you consuming?

My wife and I participated in the 26.2 with Donna, National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer Marathon Relay.  Long name I know, Donna is a local news anchor and 3 time breast cancer survivor.  The marathon/half/relay raises money for breast cancer research.

My wife finished her 5 miles in 60 minutes and 30 seconds, and my 6.2 miles took me 46:13.  I slowed down at the end so the whole 5 person team could end together.  It was a COLD day!  My wife was the first leg, with as starting temperature of 29 degrees, I was the last leg it was 46 degrees.

I am very proud of my wife, she ran her first 5K less than a year ago, with at time of over 45 minutes, and today she ran 5 miles, over a bridge at 12:00/mile.

Hey Everyone!  It's your favorite mentor, back after another weekend of pure joy with my kids :D

This was one of those weekends that I realized I could not in good faith leave the kids to go to the kids club while I trained.  I call it the tri/daddy balance conundrum  I talked to Chris (SB Nut) about it- the constant need to keep at the physical while being a good Dad/family guy/in some cases husband... and how I deal with it.  My kids are still young (6 and 3- going on 30 and 31!!! LOL)  so finding stuff to do is pretty easy.  My lil' gal had gymnastics Saturday, and my boy had Basketball.  Basketball is easy- the constant marching up and down the sidelines while cheering the team on and 3rd party coaching is fun and keeps burning calories.

We ended up swimming both days- they did lessons while I did laps, then I decided to turn family time into aqua-jogging.  Pretty sure I ended up getting a lesson in barefoot running- with my daughter on the shoulders and my son sometimes swimming along, I'm pretty sure I put in 3 solid hours.  Nothing like making family time into training time.  I'm not sure if I should call it running, swimming, aqua-jogging, strength, or just leave it out of the training plan?  It was 100% fun, and I am 100% exhausted!!!

The more I think about it, this probably isn't caused by taking fish oil.  It was the only new thing I was trying and wanted to connect to the issue.  I've been taking the recommended amount - 2 soft gels per day with food - and I take them at least 4-5 hours before a workout.

Water intake is always good - at least 2-3 liters per day before working out.  I'm always careful to watch my water consumption about an hour before a workout and make sure I'm not taking in too much fluid during a workout - exercising with a water-belly is downright uncomfortable.

Not sure what else it could be.  I didn't have too many issues after my road race yesterday in the freezing cold - 5 miles and single digit temps at start time.  I suppose I'll have to be more vigilant as to what I eat and when and see if I can identify any patterns.

Just wanted to pass on a resource that was shared at one of the tri swimming clinics that I went to a couple of weeks ago. I've been receiving the e-mails and really like the workouts that he comes up with.  He also has a Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/freeswimworkouts

********************... Workouts from Dominic

One of the presenters on Sunday, Dominic, has been sending out long distance/ open water workouts over email for the past  couple of months to anyone that subscribes to the email list. He sends out one weekly email with two swim workouts. It’s perfect for athletes that can't make group practices but still need direction when they do get into the water. All of you are welcome to subscribe by following this link:: http://eepurl.com/gMv3D

Dominic’s workouts also include descriptions of drills.

Melinda, glad to see you are getting faster!  About your issue with the pull buoy- what do you mean you are "tipping" to one side?  Like your left or right hips are rising out of the water?  My first thought is that you are not using your core enough, but I don't want to start giving advice without knowing the issue.  PM me if you'd prefer~ keep up the good work!

Maybe I could have a running mentor group, but I still need A LOT of help swimming.  I think cycling will come along easier because of my running background, and because I grew up riding a bicycle everywhere.  My wife and I did go for a 13 mile ride on Friday, I got a saddle sore near the end, but felt better by the next day.

I cannot emphasize enough how proud of my wife I am.  This time last year she told her "crazy" co-worker who started C25K that she would only run if some one was chasing her, now she excited about our half marathon in 3 weeks.Cool

So I wanted to share some rules about swimming etiquette with all of you.  I'm sure you're all polite and kind-hearted, so maybe some lurkers that might pop in here can heed the following:

1) It's only fair to share your lane with someone you see waiting on deck.  When you share it, see if they want to circle swim or if each of you should get one half of a lane.  Trust me, when you are pressed for time you'll appreciate this!

2) When you want to share a lane with someone who is already swimming- DO NOT just jump in like you're entitled to 1/2 the lane.  You are, but it's pretty dang rude.  Be nice.  Karma pays back.  Try to get the other persons attention to ask.  99% of swimmers will share (see rule 1)

3) If you see someone with their gear out at a lane, and they are stretching or putting on goggles, etc, it's really freaking rude to jump into the lane they are getting into.  This happened to me this morning- this woman walks out on deck after me, sees me getting my earplugs in, and just starts swimming.  Totally rude, in my opinion.

4) When you're being passed during a circle swim, suggest that maybe the lane should be split in half.  Otherwise, at least be kind and let people pass you at the walls- we'll tap your feet, and it's not because we have a foot fetish.

5) When sharing a lane, please don't do backstroke.  I don't want your hand into my shoulder or head because you can't see where you are going

6) Use common sense.

Anyone else have something they'd like to add?

Re-reading what I posted I think I came off as a bit ticked off

I am now off the bully pulpit after I add one more:

***Never, ever, ever Aquajog or float along and occupy valuable lane space during peak swimming hours (5:00AM to 8:00AM)

I totally agree with those rules! They're very simple but sometimes people just don't get it.  There's a woman who always water jogs in the deep end of one of the lap lanes on Tuesday mornings, and the lifeguards never say anything to her. Sheesh.

Sounds like an awesome event. That's great that you guys can run together! My husband had knee surgery last year and won't run, but he recently started biking again and can already go faster and longer than I can after I've been riding for two months, and he hasn't been on a bike since high school (he's 34). Makes me want to smack him Smile

Anyone ever do an indoor tri?  I'm signed up to do one in a couple of weeks and the more questions I ask the less psyched I am.  It's a pool swim, bike on pool deck with bikes on trainers provided by a LBS (?!?!), treadmill run. Treadmills are one thing, but I'm somewhat concerned with the bikes.  I'm not exactly a tall guy and had a difficult time finding a decent bike that fit well.  Why not use an electronic stationary bike?  Position isn't ideal, but seems better than riding a strange bike.

The race sold out last year (50 slots and a decent waiting list), this year only 20 slots were filled.  The weather in Iowa definitely isn't nice enough to draw people outdoors and as far as I know there's not another event that weekend.

Anyone else have experience with a race of an indoor nature?

Good rules Matt.  Can I add if you are in the 'slow lane' don't pop on your fins and start swimming over the top of others.  Jump in the medium or fast lane.  The people in the slow lane feel intimidated enough without feeling people touch their feet or swim past them.

ps. loving riding the bike inside watching T.V.  Tonight it is 'Switched at Birth'.  1 episode down, 1 to go... my arse is going to be so much smaller by bedtime.

Christian,

Yes- I've done a couple and I am actually doing 2 more.  They are a lot of fun!  Don't sweat the bike fitting too much- here's what you need to do:

1) Get to the place where they are doing it before race day.

2) Find a spinner they're going to be using.

3) Get on that spinner and find a position that you'll be comfortable in.  Remember all the settings.

4) Make sure to get SPD-compatible shoes and clips- you'll be amazed how much better you will do when clipped in!

They give you like 10 minutes between swim and bike, so there's plenty of time to change and get comfortable on the spinner.  They also lock down the resistance so you don't need to mess with that.

I'm sure you're going to kick some butt- I demand a race report

Catie, that's a phenomenal point- anyone who is swimming over others should be burned at the stake.  Or better yet, they should have 50 pound weights tied to their ankles and be dumped into 12 feet of water!

So we've been at this for 6 weeks now~ time flies when you're having fun.  Anyone want to share the single biggest lesson learned thus far?  Anything you had a fear about and overcame?  Catie~ I can only imagine your response... since you've accomplished your goal I'm dying to know.
