Think I'll try this tomorrow.... sounds like a good idea.

[
QUOTE]brick94513 - 2010-04-24 11:09 PM How frequently you sight depends on how straight you swim. The next time you're at the pool, push off from the wall with your eyes shut and see how many strokes you take before running into one of the lane lines. Do this several times and you'll likely find a consistent number. If you hit the lane lines every 5th or 6th stroke then sight every 5th or 6th stroke. Remember, every stroke taken beyond your "number" without sighting is a stroke taking you off course - one you'll have to retake to get back on track.

So I played with this a bit today.  I did some 50s with my eyes closed and only opened them on sight breaths.  It was a little tough at first, but actually started to feel comfortable and relaxing.  I had to sight breath every third breath (9 strokes) to keep fairly straight.

The other people in the pool probably thought I was drunk or blind!Embarassed

I got a pair of Zoomers back in Feb. They gave me blisters the size of walnuts. Almost gave up on them till yesterday. I rubbed the tops of my feet down with Glide before putting on the Zoomers. It worked! No blisters!  Of course.... if you keep the Glide in your gym back with your deodorant..... pay attention after you shower or you could end up with the Glide in your arm pits..... not that it ever happened to me.

Can you elaborate on what the fins are, why you use them, and what the benefits are?

I have Zoomers which I use every once and a while.  They are a short, rigid swim fin.  Basically, the use of fins help exaggerate the swim kick and reinforce the feel for the water.  But, fins also help with body position, kick strength, and ankle flexibility.

As with any training tool, occasional use is good, but care needs to be taken so you don't become dependant.

Just checked the weather here.... winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts over 30. Looks like I'll have to spin at the Y today. For those of you who need a good weather report each day.... Google NOAA. Once there, put in your zip code and you'll get a weather summary for your location. Scroll down that page until you see  Additional Forecast & Information. Click on Tabular Forecast and you'll get weather details broken out in one hour increments.... like windspeed and direction...etc.

Been there with the blisters.  I used to get them on my little toes.  I wear a pair of running socks now.  Seems to work, but pretty funny lookin'.

Hope everyone is doing well and having a great weekend!  I'm back from a week of work in the National Capital Reagion.  It's always good to visit the beltway to remind myself how much I love living in San Diego (no offense to anyone out there...).

Had a great training session yesterday morning and attended a very cool Transition Clinic in the afternoon.  Then got my A$$ kicked in two rounds of miniature golf by my yougest.  Of course we play hockey rules when we play so it gets kind of physical!

I'm all caught up on my Training Logs and looking forward to a long ride on the Pacific Coast Highway this afternoon.  This time next week I should be enjoying a cold frosty in the beer garden with everyone else who did the San Diego Spring Sprint.  SHould be an interesting week!

Cheers~  M

Made best of the day this morning.  My son had a baseball game in Danville at 9am.  So, I left early on the bike and my wife drove the kids to the game.  I was planning on a good long distance ride for the week, but I got there at only 36 miles.  Oh well, it was nice to have my ride done so early.  Plus, I was still able to watch both of his games.

Now out to dinner for my wife's birthday!

Thanks

Curt

They are TYR flex fins.  They are supposed to make your kick stronger by working on strength and flexibility.  I bought them because I have a weak kick.  I noticed that in my masters swim class when we do kick intervals on the kickboard.  I'm way slower than most people.  I have long legs and a short torso which seems to create a lot of drag in the water.  I'm hoping working on kick strength will help me overcome that.

Do any of you take anysupplements for joint pain, something besides ib profin?  My knees tend to get really sore when I run and I was thinking of trying something.

Glucosamine is a common suppliment used for joint health.  GNC or any vitamin store will have several joint formulas but the base for all these is usually Glucosamine.

Have looked at your shoes?  when my joints hurt, I need to replace.  I tend to get about 300mi.  Some say they get 500, I certainly do not. Also, are your running shoes "right for you"?  More cushion, etc.

Just wondering if there is a root cause...

So race season is starting...

What is your NEXT race?  Whether "A" race, "B", training race, etc.

This could be a tri, bike TT, run eg 5k or marathon...whatever

Are you doing anything special to prepare for it?  Or is it just part of the grand plan to test fitness, on way to a more important race?

Banged out what should have been a nice ride up & down the Coast.  Headed for Oceanside from 15th St Beach in Del Mar around noon with a gnarly headwind and Beach traffic... then had to go around the Encinitas Street Fair... there was a road repair detour in Lucadia... then congenstion from the Interscholastic State Surfing Championships in Oceanside.  Reverse all that coming back (X2) and my cadance and average speed just sucked... but it was still awesome to be out on the road alongside the sea.  Training Log posted.

After my ride I attended a memorial in Solana Beach commemorating the 2nd anniversary of TCSD Club member Dave Martin who died from a shark attack at Fletcher Cove on April 25th.  Although I was not into Tri back then, Fletcher Cove is my family's home break and my Son and two of my Daughters surfed that break the evening before Dave was killed by the great white.  Sure makes me me want to make every day count.

QOTD:  Pre-Race workouts are far different for a simple SPRINT TRI.  Althoug mental preparation and nutrition are still key success factors, obvioulsy due to the short distances a "Taper" is not really required.  That said, however; How would you prepare for a SPRINT TRI in the final week leading up to your race??

Just thought I'd poke my head in for a sec and report back from Lonestar.

The sprint and oly swims were cancelled due to bad weather. Water was white capping and the decision was made to cancel for safety. I wish they would have waited an hour for the storm to blow-over, as an hour later it was beautiful. This knocked me off my emotional center as I was really looking forward to the swim - it's my favorite sport out of the three.

It was then announced that we would move immediately to the bike. There would be a 3 second delayed start for every cyclist. My thoughts immediately flashed to the problems I was having with my new pedal system (I crashed again during a ride Thursday) and I started to feel panic rise up in my stomach as this meant there were going to be a LOT of people leaving the gate at the same time and it would be congested. I did some deep breathing while gearing-up for the bike. When it was my turn I calmly walked myself outside the start gate, got on my bike, clipped in and off I went. Beautiful ride along the seawall, with 25+ mph winds.

I pushed hard during the bike, although my time doesn't exactly show it. This really spent my legs. I had to start walking within 10 minutes of the run - my HR was zone 5. After a few minutes walking I started running. Had to walk two more times, but eventually finished with a time that I can live with given I am totally new to tri as well as self trained.

I'll post a RR when I return home. Thank you everyone for your support!

CONGRATS on your race Trina!

Not much any of us can do about things outside your sphere of influence or span of control.  Sounds like you adapted to the challenge and overcame with mental strength.  That's Awesome.

We are hearing from the Race Promoters here in San Diego they are expecting rain next Thursday, Friday and possibley Saturday.  For Ocean swim races they require no rain for 24 hours prior... and a clean water test (due to polution run-off and possible sewage issues).  This could change the complexion of my first Tri too.

Hope I'm as adaptable as you were...

Cheers~  MW

I'm a huge proponent of glucosamine.  About 5 years back I tore up my right hip (destroyed the cartilidge / diagnosed with arthritis)  playing touch football.  Went to a specialist and he gave me 3 options -- arthritis medication, cortisone shots, or a hip replacement.  At that time I was on 6 doses of ibuprofen a day.  Really ugly.  Ignored the doc and did some research.  Started on liquid glucosamine and stretching.  Today I'm pretty much normal / only have occasional discomfort.  Notice more pain in other parts of my body!  Every AM, I put the liquid form in my OJ and it works great.

Can't recommend this enough.

Sorry you didn't get to do the swim, but it sounds like you and the pedals got along well!

Thanks for letting us know how it went.
