dangitdake - 2010-09-29 8:00 AM I didn't spend any money on a swim coach, but I did swim 10-12 K per week in my IM training and it paid off. I felt fresh coming out of the water and my pace was similar to previous Half Ironmans even though I was doubling the distance. I had underestimated how much the swim was taking out of me due to poor form and fitness. The great thing is that it didn't take that much extra time for me to get in an extra 3-4K a week. It's only 45-60 minutes per week. Wish I had taken the swim more seriously a few years earlier.

It's not like I'm avoiding swimming.  I still swim 6-10K per week depending.  My next race is IMFL in a little over 5 weeks.  Wetsuit swim and I expect to finish in the 1:10 to 1:15 range depending on conditions.  I will make a concerted effort to become a more efficient swimmer over the winter with the 2.4 mile non-wetsuit swim looming on May 21st.

GMAN 19030 - 2010-09-29 7:13 AM Despite all my flaws, I'm still a way better than average non-wetsuit swimmer.  I just prefer the ease of a wetsuit swim.

I'm not willing to spend the time and money necessary on the portion of an Ironman that only accounts for 10% of my total time.  It sounds dopey to me when I hear people talk about how they have swam 12,000 meters per week and spend $1000 on a swim coach and improved by three to five minutes. Working on my transitions is free and arguably just as effective.

I agree that winning positions in the water does not define the race, but you can certainly loose a race in the swim portion. Good swimming volume will give you an aerobic engine that you'll not get from running or cycling. That being said, the gains you get from paying attention to the swim (often the most neglected) will far exceed your time savings before hitting t1. Otherwise, why do you think the pros swim 5 times a week but only cycle 3? Also, you don't have to spend lots of money in coaching. Here in Dallas there's a swim coach that will get you 10 secs faster or better per 100yd in two sessions, just by filming your swim underwater and later talking the details with you.
Just an idea...

Anyone doing White Rock? I'd like to do the full, just because I've been wanting to keep a tradition of doing one a year... wouldn't do another full until IMTX. Maybe just take it easy? Thoughts? Seems doable since it's so early in December.

Chris McCurdy (former olympian). His email: [email protected] and he'll charge you $265 for five 30 minute sessions (one on one).
Shannon, I'm doing White Rock but just the half, I did the full before and it will tax my training too much for that part of the season, so I'm just going to shoot for a fast time.

GMAN 19030 - 2010-09-29 7:56 AM In all fairness, I already lost the race when I registered.  Tongue out

I'm never going to be a podium contender.  My running is what holds me back far more than my swimming.  My swim and bike times are in line with folks that finish a 70.3 in 5 hours or less in my AG (M40-44).  Then I run 20 or 30 minutes slower than they do and give all that time back.  That's where I need to work.

My swim times are usually in the top-25%, wetsuit or not.

Swim another 5k a week and your run will improve too. It made me 15 secs faster a mile.

Or I could run more.  That will improve my run too. Cool

My "slow" running is more a mental thing than a physical thing.  I have a comfort zone and don't like deviating from it.  I just joined the Endurance Nation team so I now have some accountability with my run training.

I hope I didn't come off as critical. Not my intention, just relaying my personal experience in the hopes that someone may find it useful.  You may not be avoiding the swim, but in the past I certainly was and I didn't realize how much it affected my race. My big workouts in the past were 3K and this past year I was doing at least three 4K workouts a week and also started doing flip turns (which I thought were going to kill me, but I'm glad I forced myself to adjust)  leading up to IM Loo. What that translated to in training was that I would swim 1:15 instead of 1 hour. I did have a respectable time of 1:06, but that wasn't important to me. I wanted to feel good on the run, especially since it was my first IM. I felt great on the run and didn't have any fatigue problems on the bike. I have no statistical way to measure the impact of the extra swimming on my run as a previous poster did, but I'm convinced that it helped and the time spent was worth it.

Have fun in FL! I have just enough time between Louisville and now, to be bit jealous of people racing an IM in the near future. I'm at the point where I'm really excited about IM Texas, but I know I'll train that excitement away come May 21st.

I am doing the Califonia International Marathon on the same day as WR. I was suppose to be doing it with a buddy with the plan of BQing. Unfortunately, he needs knee surgery so I am solo. It is almost 6 months before IMTX so I am not worried.

Hey Craig,
The CIM is an awesome marathon. I ran it back in 2003 and it's a definite PR course. I'm sure I'll have some friends running it this year (I'm originally from CA) so if you want, I can get you in touch with them. Just so you know someone.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Price goes up at midnight. Have 2 more hours to decide! Ha!

Hey everyone, thought it was about time I joined the thread.  I signed up for IM Texas about a month ago.  Will be my first IM, coming from a distance cycling background.  I've also run a few marathons and Trail Ultras, so the cycling and running doesn't worry me much.  Don't get me wrong, not discounting the difficulty, I just know what it will take to be ready for those.

However, the swim is in my head.  I've been swimming 2K 4 times a week and have just started with a Coach this week.  Once I'm comfortable with my form, I'll be looking for a place to swim open water around Dallas (Rowlett).  Anyone aware of a local club that swims regularly around Dallas?  Lake Ray Hubbard is closest to me, but I wouldn't mind a drive if needed.

Looking forward to talking with you all.  Pretty nice group you've got here.

Steve

My group swims out of windsurf bay in ray hubbard regularly along the buoy line. Sometimes we do it with support, sometimes is just us without a kayak. Shoot me a PM with your number and I'll keep you posted. Usually it's friday evening and sunday morning.

I'm starting to get ready for my first ironman!  Just taking a couple weeks completely off after Augusta 70.3  Wanted to let everyone know my plans and to see what you think about my pre-season race schedule.  I'm currently in Western, NC but am moving to Austin Dec 1 - March 5 to train and enjoy the winter off before golf season begins again in NC and I have to get back to work!  If anyone wants to get in longer rides/runs on weekends or anytime for that matter I have no schedule restrictions so i'll be able to drive and meet some people in Texas while im living there for 3 months.

Jan 30- Austin, TX Half Marathon 13.1
Feb 20- San Antonio, TX Calveras Duathlon 3.1/21/3.1
March 19th - Cary, NC Long Course Duathlon 5/31/5
April 23rd - Aiken, SC  Intl Distance 1500m/24/10k
May 21st - Ironman Woodlands 2.4/112/26.2

I'm following the supercoach network plan and it will be modified a bit.
http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/ironman-workouts/

I'm looking to improve run and swim speed while in Texas and would love some input on Master's swim people might recommend or a gym/pool I can join.  Bike will be base endurance as I am happy with bike fitness.  I would like to hear your comments on preseason races and also who/where I need to go to train.  Thanks for the help!

From the Rules and Regulations on ironmantexas.com

"13) “No Pass Zone.” Athletes are required to ride at a reduced rate of speed and maintain a static position on all Palani Road descents. This includes the descent from Queen Ka’ahumanu to Kuakini and the descent from Kuakini returning to transition. Both descents are approximately 2/10 of a mile and include sharp turns with an immediate left turn at the bottom of the hill. Failure to comply will result in a penalty to be served at the transition area. Disregard for this rule that places other athletes and/or race officials in immediate peril will result in disqualification and a one-year suspension from all licensed and qualifying Ironman events."

I think the swim from Texas to Hawaii is more than 2.4 miles.

My parents did that for a couple of years at IMLP.  Basically, you give out the finisher's medals, and escort the athlete to medical/food/massage depending on what they want/need.  You're mainly keeping  an eye on them for the first several minutes after the cross to make sure they don't crater.
