Had a nice 40min trainer ride today, used my new Garmin 405CX to check my intervals/HR patterns. Also tried running on my brothers minimalist shoes, Saucony Kinvara's, for five minutes or so on the treadmill. Ran very well and loved how light they were, but I think I am maybe a month or two away from being able to run full time on even shoes like that. are your calves sore yet? I heard they do a number on your calves until you get used to wearing them for a few months. |

Regular 103 Alameda, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group adamamelia - 2010-12-29 3:01 PM I check in here multiple times daily and really enjoy hearing about the details of training/gear :-) Today was a 5 mile treadmill run for me. I know I should embrace the 20 degree MI weather, but I actually find treadmill training to be a beneficial part of my base winter training plan. I work on form, balance, cadence, intervals, etc... and find the precise tolerances of a treadmill to be very beneficial. Despite what I read to the contrary, I find my outdoor runs are much improved having spent time on a treadmill. Indoor biking, on the other hand, SUCKS! I think I might try to do it again. I haven't had to run inside yet because the weather outside has always been good enough to run in. From what I remember running on a treadmill wasn't nearly as bad as biking on a trainer. The only thing I found hard is that if I am running and feel really good I start running into the front of the treadmill hah, then I up the speed, get tired and start to lag behind. I guess I like the freedom of being able to change pace quickly with outside runs. Make way for all of the new people joining the gym next week everyone! I hope the pool lanes are still semi-free. Most of the gym fills up in the weights and cardio area anyway. |

I've done a 7mi run with pretty quick pace in the Newtons and despite actually kinda feeling rough in my calves during the run I haven't had soreness after. To mitigate I did buy a pair of compression socks, just to make sure I look like an idiot everywhere I go. I started with a few 1-3 milers but feel ok...could just be that I'm young. |

Expert 977 Huntington Beach | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group jaegee - 2010-12-29 2:44 PM Had a good swim today. That's all that was on my agenda...so I guess it was a pretty light day. Yesterday I had a 30 min run and 1 hr bike. Well it was downpouring so I jumped on the trainer. Yet again, it wasn't very great, but it was better than the last few times. I only managed 30 minutes. I'll tack on the rest of the bike on the next bike workout outside. I figured out why my hands were so sore. When I bike outside the bike is level, so I just had to angle the nose of my saddle up slightly to not put so much weight on my hands. But on the trainer, even with the block for the front tire, it still is at a decline, which puts weight on my hands. I'll get a book or something to put under it to make it more level. After I lose more weight I doubt it will be an issue. Are you on week 14 of the plan? Your workouts always sound close to mine. haha. I was really proud of myself for getting through an hour on the trainer. It is only the second time I have managed to stick it out. Problem is I know I am just going light on the trainer. I figure the workout is the mental part of being on there and I will leave the real pushing for the street. |

When it starts to taper I will start over I am on the fence about signing up for Rev3 Cedar Point. I think I am going to do it, but I'm still pretty worried about making the commitment this far out. If/when I do sign up (which will hopefully happen before the new year, for the price drop) I'll start the new 20 weeks out from that race date. |

Lol..they really do look ridiculous. I try to keep them under my tights now but sometimes I can't avoid wearing them with shorts. My girlfriend is pretty embarrassed to run with me...I look like an old guy they'd make fun of in a sitcom |

Have you thought about doing the Wildflower Long Course? Your plan ends one week early but I'm sure you can carry over some light tapering workouts. I did the Short Course last year as my first tri (ever) and had a blast. BTW, I live/train/work on the Peninsula if you ever feel like heading out over the SM Bridge for a change of bike/run scenery. |

Expert 732 | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group I'm on the train on my way from DC to NYC to spend New Years with my girlfriend in Manhattan. My next two days of training really conflict with this schedule unfortunately...have 2 swim days and my 90min run. Going to try and get the run in between my meetings and girlfriends arrival but I think i'm just screwed for the two swims |

Veteran 118 Washington D.C. | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group So, put alot of thought into a New Year resolution and I think I came up with a pretty damn good one. Accumulate 2500mi in one year, combining distances from all three sports. If my numbers are right it seems that if you stick to this training plan for about the full year its possible. The odometer starts Jan. 1st! |

Make sure to have some intermediate goals so you don't feel like your working towards nothing, and if something happens (injury, or other interruption) you have something to hang your hat on. |

I checked out the course description and got afraid, haha. I think I'll have a hard time completing the course distance let alone the difficulty of hills. But training with you sounds really fun. I could just duplicate the current week I am in so we line up with our plans. You are probably faster than I am. I bike around 17mph, swim around 8min 1/4mile, and run around 10min miles. How does that compare with you? But I can try to push myself over those limits. Those 20x50m really sucked didn't they?! Ugh, I thought I was going to let my lunch go in the pool towards 17-18... We will see about wildflower though, I might be a game day decision, depends on how well the following weeks of the plan go. |

Wildflower's a challenge but certainly worth it (just make sure to throw hills into training).

During the 400m continuous warm-up it was kind of a nice break during the set. But overall it is hell. And adam - I agree with you. When I do a HIM I plan on using my legs as a flutter to keep my balance and help me keep my speed in control. But because of how much the kicking hurts in the training drills it seems that the extra strength/control the drills give will make your legs that much fresher during a race, by using them the same amount as you would before the kick drills. |

Bought a bike trainer yesterday but they didn't have a riser for it (well they did but it was $75 and I would rather cut a piece of 2x4 than spend that on a riser block) so it'll be in play as of tomorrow or Monday. Kids go back to school and then I'm back on the road to run and in my living room to ride. Woo hoo! Edited by lamb_y2003 2011-01-01 9:36 PM |

What kind of riser costs $75 was it molded from a fine metal or something? I have no idea. It didn't appear to come with someone ready to sponge off my forehead so I said no go. LOL. Truthfully I was really excited and I probably could've been convinced to buy it even at the inflated price but the saleswoman clearly didn't want to be working on New Year's Eve and had no interest in selling to me. So I told her that I'd take the trainer but everything else in the store was too expensive and didn't even get a box for the trainer (it was on display), I just paid and carried it out. Which I regretted since it weighed about 10 tons and I was walking to the bus with a 7 & 4 year old. I'm an idiot but I'm an idiot with principles. |

Expert 732 | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group Agreed- The kickboard is brutal and I never do it unless I am in a lesson...which is very infrequently. My week of training was pretty bad, for the first time yet in the training plan. I was on vacation and didn't really have the means to get a good swim or bike in. I ran 6 days for 24.5mi but almost nothing for run and bike |
