do we want to have a BT group swim and breakfast on Friday morning?  I'd be up for it, I would like to do a short swim and orient myself around the swim exit and running up the helix.

I think the helix is still open to traffic on Friday morning.  I might advise against running up it.

It looks like I'll be heading up from Chicago on Sunday am to ride the whole course.  Anyone know of places to park, for free hopefully, at the start of the bike course?  Thanks.

The main area people have been parking is on Bruce street in front of Fireman's Park.

Looks like they posted the 2012 Athlete Guide.  That IronKids race on Saturday is great - will give my kids something to do instead of stressing me out haha

I feel as if all they ever do on these athlete guides each year is change the dates on the schedules.

So here's a question:

There is an "Unauthorized Equipment" rule that says no communication devices.  What is inherently unclear is whether that's USING the device or simply CARRYING the device.

I'm just curious if anyone knows, because I can certainly see scenarios where a person would want to CARRY one if they're high risk for a DNF so that they can contact and coordinate with their family should they indeed drop out.  So it if it stays in the jersey pocket the whole race, is it a violation?  And if yes, then do you have to carry 3 cell phones to be DQ'd??  (Three strike rule.)

And just to play devil's advocate, the rule says "communication devices" except that GPS's are allowed and those are communicating with a satelite.  What if I just want to use the GPS in my cell phone and track my race with Strava?

I may have found a partial answer--rule 13 in the run section clarifies that "use of such devices may result in disqualification."

You cannot carry a cell phone at all, even if it's just set up on your bike for gps. With that being said, nobody is going to be searching you. A T1 volunteer is the only person who would have any chance at finding it in your bike jersey. Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk. Even if they give you a time penalty instead of a dq, they're going to take your phone. No guarantee you'd get it back. Aid stations are pretty frequent, and the officials and mechanics are all over the bike course. If you have to drop out, you won't be waiting long before someone comes by.

2012 IMWI Participant list is up...

I conveniently converted it into excel for you to manipulate and to be able to spy on your competition by sorting by Age Group, State, Bib#, etc....

There are over 2,770 registered athletes...

Enjoy...

PS:  Feel free to make a small contribution to help me reach my IM Foundation goal HERE

Download the Excel list here

Are we allowed to stay on the beach until the gun goes off for the swim and then head into the water?  I have a friend who said he did that last year.  Does anyone else do that?

If you're not in line by about 6:30, you'll be on the beach when the gun goes off whether you want to be or not. But if you're just worried about the contact, might as well jump in and just head to the back of the pack. That way you can spend a few minutes getting acclimated to the water.

I wouldn't recommend this but last year there was a guy who showed up 10 min after the gun went off.  He casually walked in to the water and had a clear swim, at least until the 2nd loop.

Couple of Questions:

1) Race Day Parking – How do participants get their bikes to their cars after the race if they park at theAlliantEnergyCenterand take the shuttle to the start line?

2) I noticed in the Athlete Guide you cannot have your shoes clipped in to your bike pedals before the start of the bike.  Are you allowed to dismount your bike at the end of the bike course and leave your shoes clipped in as you enter T2?

Yes.  Last year, there were alot of people who waited on the shore and started to go in when the gun went off.   I made the mistake of starting just ahead of that area and got clobbered by a few of those people.

obvious first timer questions...

1. real time athlete tracking?  Is the go-to gps rental from My Athlete?

2. From reading some race reports it sounded like there was a "board" where spectators could put up inspirational notes to athletes.  Is this true?  If so, would it be something friends/family could do from home or just on location?

3. Yay or Nay on the Athlete dinner on Friday night for a first time IMer?  Anyone else planning on going?

1) They'll let you take your bike on the bus back to the stadium.

2) You can, but you're going to stay clipped in while you climb the helix and the dismount is just past the top of the climb.  So you'll need to be quick if you want to get your feet out.  Unlike T1, it's a pretty short run from the dismount line to the changing tent.
