I was just curious to see if anyone had heard of it... since I hadn't until recently....

I was just hired on to be one of the leading R&D scientists for the company that makes it.  I will be designing nutritional supplements/vitamins for them.

Let me be the first to volunteer to test this stuff. My 53 year old partner is interested in "herbal boner pills" if you make those.....

Ha ha ha!  You guys crack me up....

Leslie:  The new avatar is smokin' hot, girl!

Kirk:  Boner pills.  Check.  Get right on that.

Heather:  Nope, I am a biochemist/chemist/molecular biologist (depending on the day).

Training question:

Today I'm supposed to do a brick, but the bike portion has a big gear drill, which I've never done. Am I right in thinking if I'm supposed to do a 12x 1min big gear drill. I go into the biggest gear I can keep moving in and just mash for 1 minute then drop down into a lower gear to recover?

Wow. I always wanted to be a scientist. I ended up as a geek instead.

That is how you would do it.  Are you sure that's supposed to be a brick though?  It seems early in the plan for Mike Ricci to be throwing that in, plus it doesn't seem like he would add a brick on top of that drill (it will really stress your legs).  I didn't see the brick listed in the description, just that it was bike and run day.

You should probably be sure to walk around a bit and stretch before you start the run - and take the run easy!

Thanks. I just figured if it said bike and run that it should be a brick....what you're saying is that if it's meant to be a brick it will say so, and that on these days I could do one rest a bit then do the other?!?!?!

Trust me, I looked at what I was supposed to do today and it made me kind of queezy just thinking about it.

Kristen - I just looked through the plan, and I was wrong about this being early in the plan for a brick.  Sure enough, today is not a brick, but in 5 days you do have one (Day 14).  The big difference you'll see though is that the run is only 10 minutes on that day.  I think the next brick after that isn't until day 35.

The easiest way to see it is by going to the listing of all the plans, then selecting "Complete Plan Quick View" for your plan.

Kristen:  Actually, you don't ever want to mash... you'll want to ride your big chain ring but still keep a moderately high cadence.  Don't just mash the hardest gear you can... Ride a gear that is challenging for you and puts a little burn in your legs, but you shouldn't be cranking away in a gear that isn't doing anything for your power or endurance.  It should be harder than your normal pedal stroke but not so hard that you completely toast your legs.

This is a strength exercise, but you are still looking for the endurance here.  Lactic acid = bad, remember?

Jorge might have something to add to this.... Coach?

And yes... if you are meant to do a brick, it will say so.  Most two-a-day workouts are done with several hours in between each session.  This is really important for proper recovery....

Since I am basically slacking this week, I am thinking when I start up for real next week (minus the kids ) that I might like to try some "speed" work. I am hoping to be selected for a PT instructor course at work and the first day I have to do pushups/situps/ and a 1.5 mile run a little quicker than I can muster as of today. Any ideas??

I've been doing my workouts together for awhile....no wonder I'm so exhausted at the end. LOL What a dope.

OK, lesson learned.

OK..I'm frustrated. I'm trying to learn the Total Immersion swim thing, and I"m to the part where you are blading and looking down, then rolling back up past the sweet spot to breathe.

It all works fairly well except the fricking roll up part. I roll up and try to breathe, but the corners of my nose are still partially under water and I end up with water in my nose.

And, when I'm skating, I feel like my feet are kicking in front of me to one side or the other.

I'm moving really well, and I feel balanced, but I have to wonder if I'm doing this wrong.

Any tips?

Make sure you are breathing out your nose when you roll. Also, make sure you are rolling past sweet spot to get a breath.

As Dan said before, you move your head separate from the rest of your body.  You shouldn't be rolling to breathe, you should be rolling to stroke through.  You should be turning your head to breathe.  Its that simple... just turn your head.  Your entire face should be out of the water.

>rolling vs turning.

I'm not to the part where I'm swimming yet. I'm still "skating" on my side (more like my back for me) and looking down at the bottom of the pool. My next step will be to take my upside arm and touch my forehead.

Make sure you are breathing out your nose when you roll. Also, make sure you are rolling past sweet spot to get a breath.

Does that mean I should feel off balance since I'm "past" my sweet spot?

No, you should not feel unbalanced. You need to roll just far enough past to be able to breath comfortably. I have this down to a fine art breathing and rolling past sweet spot on my left, but I still have trouble on my right. It just takes practice.

I got a new bike today!!!!!!!

I'm still trying to figure out how to post a picture of it. I'm not sure its sexy enough to be considered bike porn, but I'm sure excited about it. After riding around on my old Trek Hybrid for so long, actually having a road bike is awesome!!!!!

It's like riding a race horse..isn't it?

I'm doing my first OWS tomorrow morning. I haven't trained at all this week except to do those drills in the Total Immersion book. I feel like I haven't done anything in so long.

I plan on taking it slow and easy and try as much as I can to Totally Immersion swim.

God help me.

Good luck with your OWS. Just remember to breathe and take it easy if you start to feel panicky. You will not drown!!!!
