Here is some free therapy: 1. Self-conquest is the greatest of all victories (Plato) 2. ...this thing we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down. (Mary Pickford) 3. There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and after that,to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second. (Logan Pearsall Smith) 4. Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you. (Aldous Huxley) 5. Do not think your truth can be found by anyone else. (Andre Gide) 6. Very little is needed to make a happy life. It is all within yourself, in your way of thinking. (Marcus Aurelius) 7. ...when you're not thinking about yourself a lot, you're usually happy. (Al Pacino)

I hear therapy, like all good medicine, free or not, works best when actually taken.

Okay, I'm stepping off the soapbox and making an important phone call.

Wise advice. Part of what has got me set off is having to Christmas shop for my children, pack the stuff and send it to Savannah. And I have no idea whether their mother is going to cooperate with a holiday visit. Oh well - if she doesn't, when we have the hearing on April 7th the judge will take care of the visitation issues then

There's no question that having to do that is terribly painful, and I'm speaking as a childless one who would have no idea how painful it is.

None of us like thinking of you going through this stuff alone--that's why we're here (online and on call) and encouraging you to find someone to walk through it with in real time.

The reason I won't swim... is knowing I'll always be compared to my children's mothers whomever guy it is of the moment being better at that, or something else...

I still hurt from the time I did a cycling omnium, I was getting roasted in the crit part, she brought the kids over, and I was doing my best to finish and not DNF, I was last, and yelled (jokingly) "Hey, I'm last!" Aftewards, she lambasted me for saying that, saying "WHY would you be proud of that?" And saying I shouldn't bother to race if I could not compete.

Of course, her BF places and wins his AG at sprints.

If I didn't hate being fat, I would drop all of this right now.

Why are you doing this? (By that, I mean running, biking and swimming.) For yourself? Or for your ex? 'Cause if you're doing it for yourself, then don't pay attention to her latest "guy of the moment." I think that what you said during the crit was a good thing for your kids to see. It showed them that you weren't giving up, and that you were enjoying yourself. (Yes, winning is fun. But if you're enjoying the challenge, that's a good thing.)

I agree. Finishing is very important. I'll never win my AG, but my goal is to finish and beat my own time. Who cares what everyone else is doing. Your kids I'm sure are proud that you are even in a race.

At almost 8 and 6 (Jan and Feb 08 respectively) they're not quite even old enough to GET what a 'race is' yet.

But they do get that Dad can play guitar

Yes you can!!!

I happen to agree with you that its important to show that one is not giving up. But she is one of those people that thinks - and this is hilarious, actually - that you can't be 'competitive' by some arbitrary measure, that you shouldn't participate in an activity.

But what's even funnier is, for having such an elitist attitude, she'll lie about stuff that makes her personally look bad. Such as lying about being a college graduate, which, until recently, I thought she was - until I called her "alma mater" and found out that she DID attend, but never completed her degree. But her school lets people walk if they're close to finishing.

It blows my mind someone could attend a good college for 4+ years and NOT graduate - especially when someone else, her folks, were footing some of the bills.

But you're not with her now. So if YOU like running and biking, do them. And if you even manage to tolerate swimming, and want to do it so you can participate in tris, even though you won't be setting world records, then why NOT do it?

You'll also be setting an example for your kids - namely that physical activity is important and healthy, and is something that can be done your entire life. --> Even if one is not a professional athlete.

And yeah. Colleges will let people walk if they are close to finishing. They don't want to embarrass people who may have friends and family in the audience. They'll give everyone walking a blank diploma holder, too....

Are you able to have any contact with your children at all? (Letters and phone calls?) I'm asking because I know of some barracudas out there that make any contact almost impossible for their exes.

Yeah, but that blank diploma holder is no good without the diploma.

Do the activity for yourself.  If you are happy with your results, then your true friends and family will be happy with you.

But they do get that Dad can play guitar

which is exactly why they need you to teach them

teach them that it's about

  • fitness
  • friends
  • being the best you can be
  • always striving to be better
  • discovering how tough you really are
  • trying to better than you did the last time, but if you don't being ok with it
  • feeling happy for others in their success

well, that's what it's about for me anyway

Scott, make sure you send the kids letters addressed to them and include pictures of yourself.  That way they will always be reminded of what you look like and you wont' be a stranger to them when you do get to see them in person.  Even include some old pics of you with the kids.

Not the same thing, but I send my grandsons cards and letters addressed to them and my daughter says they love getting the mail that is just for them.  It will have been 7 months by the time I get to see them in January.  They were here in GA for the last almost 3 years, and now are in CA.  I miss them lots.
