LadyNorth - 2011-02-02 2:03 PM SteveB/ and Anne and anybody else,

I've only done sprints so never had aid stations for the bike leg.  How do they work?  Do people hand you bottles of water(I assume not cups)? What's the biker protocol when getting the water?  If it's a crowded race, it seems it would be dangerous..  Please help me with all you know.
Thanks, Denise

DENISE,

I found the few races I have done to be just as Steve described.   However, I'm not as confident and so far I have just stopped; straddled the bike and dumped the water into my own water bottles.  At HVJ, they had so much water left the volunteers kept asking me if I wanted a shower and they proceeded to dump 3 bottles on my head.     It was much appreciated.   I have never really found it too crowded.

lufferly - 2011-02-01 9:55 PM Woohoo, finally got back in the pool tonight ... no swimming for me since September, yikes.  Did a easy continuous 600y swim and it felt SO GOOD.  I don't know what kept me away for so long.  Hope to get another swim in on Thursday evening before driving to Fort Worth on Friday morning to meet my daughter. And, of all things, we have a 60% chance of snow on Friday. It was 70 degrees here this morning, the temp dropped to 40 degrees in a matter of 15 minutes, and it is now below freezing with temps tonight into the teens and wind chill of 0. We have the craziest weather around here!

LISA

Nice swim Lisa.   If I had been away from swimming since September, I would have been hard pressed to swim 600 continuous on my first day back!

I thought our weather has been bad lately but haven't had the drastic changes you are experiencing.    Hope you have some warm clothes.

stevebradley - 2011-02-01 7:42 PM ANNE again - Got it! Australia! Jane was sent there by her company to conduct some training of the people in the Sydney office, so she's there until March 19 (arrived Jan 4); that's the reason for this. It bugs me that I'm not going, but (a) we don't have anyone to take care of our sweet, aged dog, who gets homesick when we're gone for more than 4 or 5 days, and (b) I get terribly uncomfortable in airplanes. It was bad enough for me flying to and from Newark/Madris 2+ years ago, and those were just a six- and an eight-hour flight. From anywhere on the west coast to Sydney is 12-14 hours, and my hip/groin continuum would be badly compromised. Planes don't really come in Steve-size portions in economy class, I'm afraid! So, Lynn'll be going with a dear old friend who lives in Lethbridge, and I'll stay home here with Luna. She'll be away from Feb 21 to March 19, giving me lots of time to contemplate this golden opportunity passing me by. Also, it's bloody expensive, so if I stay here then Lynn will have more financial freedom to play while there. And seeing as how she's the bread-winner, she much more richly deserves this than I do! Boo-hoo?

Oh, I'm SORRY.       I didn't want to make you sad.   I clearly understand the reasons you are staying behind.   I don't like sitting more than 3 hrs at one time.   12-14 hours would be a killer.

Any closer to getting races lined up for the season?

Steve/Anne

Thanks guys.  I plan on practicing like crazy but if I'm at all in doubt I'll use Anne's stop method.  I'll be in the back so shouldn't be crowded.

Are the tops on the bottles? I don't think I could unscrew while riding.

Denise

Steve - do you cook just for yourself when Lynn's gone?

DENISE -

It depends on the benevolence of the RD and the volunteers. If it's high, you will get a bottle on which the seal is broken, but the lid is on. If it's not so high, you'll have the break the seal itself. (So, this is a good skill to work on -- sticking the bottle top in your mouth and using your teeth to unseal the cap. Seriously!)

Of course, if what you get are cycling-style water bottles with the thingie on top, then all that's required is just the gentle yank with your teeth --- which are already used to some of the work involved in breaking the seal of a store-bought water bottle.

(See, if god hadn't meant for us to break the seal on a bottle cap with our teeth, he would've made us all "gummers"! )

To ease your worried mind, why not write the RD right now and ask what sort of bottle they're planning to provide?

As for cooking while Lynn is gone, well, it'll be minimal; "maintenance" comes to mind. There will be nothing at all creative, unless I get either highly bored or surprisingly inspired. I doubt I'll gain any weight while she's gone, while the arrow pointing a bit to the "Starvation" side, as opposed to "Sated".

DENISE again -

I know we've talked before about USAT rankings, and an interesting thing happened in the past few days -- I bumped up five places, from 39 to 34 (out of 630). One of my scores got adjusted higher, and if that holds and is not an ephemeral aberration, tat'll be good.

Sort of. The "cut-off" for straight All-American is 31, so I'm just three places back......which is more agonoizing than being at 39th, eight places back. Argh?

For 2009 I was 52/570 in M60-64, with a "score" of 77.10338. 2010 has me at 34/630, with a score of 78.70747. Plus, in '09 I was 2.08936 points from the final A-A guy; for '10 I was just 0.18908 behind him. So, I guess it was a pretty successful season.......but still a bit more work to do to get into straight A-A from my spot in A-A HM.

Oh! The recent movement has bumped me a couple of places above Ben Ewers!

LISA -

Big congrats on not only returning to the pool, but enjoying it! You're now 2/3 of the way to being a "whole" person again!

One of the guys from my new group is from Denison, and he ran yesterday on sheer ice and likely sprained his ankle. That, combined with the Packers needing to practice inside at SMU, is good evidence that Texas weather is suffering a severe identity crisis.

Stay safe out there!

DENISE,

Nice long run today.  I am envious.

FYI, I have been doing some interesting swim sessions lately.   I have a BT friend, JOBLIN (you can link to her from my page), and she belongs to a masters swim club, I think.   Anyway she posts her swim workouts in great detail and I have been cutting and pasting, and using them for Ken and I.    I just adjust the pace times to suit our abilities.   You might like some of them.

They are fun, and sometimes hard, but they give real focus to the swim session and the time flys.

Hey guys!

I hope all is well.  Sorry to be a no-show for so long.  Life is BUSY. Just got back from Baxter Park. Had a ball.

SO if anyone is thinking of doing a Rev3 Tri, here is a code for a $10 discount - feel free to share (Steve, share this and the info below with your other group if you want).  Let me know if it doesn't work - they hand out 10 at a time, but I get an unlimited # to give out. The code is: TRAKKERS29

AND also, if you order anything from All3Sports, the code GOTRAKKERS will get you 15% off.

Just thought I would share the love!

I swam 3000 yards today. My arms are tired.

MANDY,

You have the MOST interesting life!   Made the mistake of checking out your blog and 45 minutes later, dragging myself away.   The Baxter trip looks so cool - the pictures amazing.    Showed them to Ken -  Baxter is really high on our priority list!

Read abit about your training - well done on your dedication and commitment to the swimming, and training in general, considering how busy you are.   Love your bike.   You are going to have a blast on that, for sure.    I think I now know about 7 people counting you that will be racing Placid this year -  I'm doing to be doing alot of cheering!!!

Think I'm going to have to start dropping in on your blog a bit more often.

Oops! I guess it isn't a full-blown habit yet! I have just caught up through yestrerday, and will TRY to remember to add today's when/if I finish (start) a trainer ride in a while.

Skiing today got both Achilles gooing. Bloody hell......
So, no skiing tomorrow.

I see my sports doc Monday at 12:30 about whatvere has been going on with my right foot, around the ankle. Maybe it's low and diffuse Achilles stuff, but am mostly flummoxed by it. No running for 10 days now, kind of missing it -- especially with it being so warm and sunny today!

I've finally been showing my face at the gym these last few days... The guy at the front desk said, "Wow, it's been a while!" :/

But the trips to the gym weren't for swimming. My tri friend Donna talked me into a class they do called "x-press" which is a lot like P90X. I've done two classes so far and I have NEVER been so sore in my life. I was so sore after yesterday's class that I actually had trouble sleeping last night, even though I had taken 600 mg ibuprofen. Today I'm feeling a little better...

Anyway, I saw the lap swimmers as I walked by the pool area and I was reminded that I've really got to get back there if I have any hopes of an Oly this summer. Lap lanes are open right after x-press class, conveniently enough. A nice, easy 20 minute "cool-down" swim afterwards might be a good place to start to get back into the swing of things!

It's February. Winter. Mid-northern Maine is COLD. What's an intelligent humanoid such as yourself doing at Baxter??? I will check your blog later to see what all you were up to, other than freezing.

Nice swim! 3000 gets you right at the threshold of IMLP. And with that cable there to guide you on race day, I dare say you're ready for it tomorrow! (That is, the cable seems to reduce the demands of 2.4 miles considerably.)

Thanks for the Trakkers stuff, and I will try to use some part of it at some point. Right now I'm neither registering nor purchasing, trying to be a good boy with half a brain. These things ain't easy for me!

TRACEY -

Another missing voice heard from! The Red Sox contingent must be ready for spring training here at GrooveTime!

Sweet plan, a 20-min swim as cool-down to get you back in the swing of things. If X-Press works your upper body lots, though, don't do much pure strokework on those swims. And if X-Press works your legs hard, avoid kicking in the pool. If it works everything......float on your back for 20 minutes?

Naw, i'm just mostly goofin' around. You should be fine regardless of what you do, and if whatever you do you do just so, it should help post-X-Press recovery. Let me know how the X-P/swim combo goes, okay?

Hey Anne, thanks for the swim suggestions, I'll take a look. BUT - I must say I am not real gung-ho about my swim training.  I'll put in the time and make sure I can do the distance, but I just don't think anything's going to get me much faster so I'm not very motivated.

Why thank you! And I guess his location indicates how he can afford to do those higher-profile races, eh?

Speaking of choosing ------ what is your team-of-choice tonight? I know there is the hardcore Vikings thing with you, but that you also have ties to Wisconsin. I suspect that that is like me and the Steelers, as i am a die-hard Browns fans.

So how would this work as one of those analogies: Vikings are to Packers what Browns are to Steelers? Oil and water? Irreconcilable Differences?

So, it's the Packers for me, as I can only go so far with caring about the Steelers without feeling dirty and ashamed of myself!

Go Patriots?
Go Browns?
Go 49ers?

Ha ha I always got to Baxter in the winter! It is the best time to go, no one else seems to think it is a good time to go!

Well, maybe not ready tomorrow. BUT getting there. I got my bike!  It is on my trainer, I rode for 2hrs today. The only problem was the seat that came with the bike was made by some sadistic bastard. Holy crap. I changed seats with my old bike and I don't care what it looks like.  Also it is weird shifting like that. You have to be in aero to shift? Weird to me.

Oh and those codes are for anyone - if you hear someone signing up for Rev3 hand out code!

Good luck on being a good boy and not registering or buying anything...
