disturbed275 - 2012-06-02 6:40 PM I had another race today.  It was a 20k in Des Moines which is touted as America's largest 20k probably because it is such and odd distance.  Anyway, I had a great race and for the first time this year felt like things really came together.  I ran a 1:24:36 which was good enough for 177th out of about 7000 people.  It was a 4.5 minute PR over when I ran it last four years ago and a great confidence booster in terms of feeling I may actually be able to qualify for Boston later this year.  I celebrated with ginormous steak for dinner and a a few founder's IPAs to wash it down

Bam!  Breaking a PR by four and 1/2 minutes...  Bam!!!  That is awesome - congrats on the accomplishment.  Qualifing for Boston now that would be an accomplishment.  If you make it - we will have to figure out a way to share a beer together as the start line is about 5 miles from my house.  I've been thinking about running it as a bandit next year to raise money for a hospital in the area (apologies in advance if the idea of a bandit upsets you... I don't blame you for being mad after putting in all the effort to qualify.).

The Founders IPA is in my top 5... was it the Centennial?

I'll definitely have to take you up on the beer offer if I make it. The idea of running bandit doesn't really upset me.  I know what I have to do to get there.  What someone else does really doesn't have an impact on that.

And yes, it was the Centennial.  The local grocery store just recently started carrying Founder's so I've been slowly trying out all of the varieties

Founders might just be one of the best breweries in America... I know that just seems like a random opinion - but their lineup of beers is so highly judged.  They've won a ton of medals at craft brew festivals.  I love the Centential, the Cherese, Red's Rye PA, Imperial Stout, and the Kentucky Breakfast Stout... all so good.

As for Boston... I'm a bit conflicted.  There is a part of me that feels that qualifying is the right thing to do.  I checked it out tonight and running 26 straight sub 7:30 miles seems beyond my ability... But it would be a hell of a goal...

Hi All - Glad to see everyone is doing well.  Anyone got a race coming up soon?  I've got a 5k I'm doing with my sons - nothing serious...

Question - I've been working on improving my swim times and I'm wondering how y'all keep track of time when it comes to taking breaks during an interval workout.  For example, today I swam 1400 y and my total time was 42 minutes... However, I rested more than six minutes during that time for a total of 36 minutes of actual swimming.

If I were running, I would count the break time - it would be like walk breaks.  But what about with swimming.  Do you count your rest time?

I would count it in your total swim time of you are swimming a 1400m straight. Eventually you won't need the breaks and it will go down. I would probably just set it up with pre set rest times. In swimming the easiest is probably to split a 1400m swim into 2x700 @ 2min rest or something like that. Or 200WU with 4x300 @ 45s rest. Etc.

mndymond - 2012-06-05 1:20 PMHi dudes! Peds is awesome!!! Wooooo wooooo. I might get Thursday off! Free day off! Woooo wooooo! Haha.
Awesome! I took today off with my husband and it was so much fun to have a random week day off. We went and rode the bike course for my tri next weekend. Then we went mountain biking. And we got in an OWS!

Does it get anymore romantic than getting in a workout with your hubby!  All kidding aside - I'd love to be able to work out with my wife...

I agree! my hubby is totally not a tri-guy...but when I have a long run planned he packs the bike and our kidlet in the chariot and more then happily pulls her along beside me as my 'sherpa' I LOVE training with the family!

I totally did the same role as your husband last summer. Now with my training we bike together with him pulling our burley. When we swam "together" it was us each getting 45 minutes of the time the lake is open for OWS and spending the other 45 playing with our daughter on the beach. It's actually a blast and my daughter is loving going to the beach while we swim. It helps that there is a really nice playground right next to the beach. Pretty awesome to get quality time with my daughter and get a mile and a quarter to a mike and a half swim in. Oh, and I agree my husband is super hot when he's building sand castles with my daughter :-)

Hey guys!

Looks like that road trip was exactly what I needed to get back on track!  After getting back Sat night, I did that long ride on Sunday, swim class on Monday, lots of running on Tuesday, and a quick bike ride tonight.  Planning on a short run tomorrow, swim Friday, and then I have a half marathon on Saturday.

I'd originally hoped to PR this half, but between my PF coming back 2 weeks ago, then not getting much training done last week, not sure how that will work out.  I'll probably start out at a moderate pace, and depending on how I feel during the race, I'll step it up and see if I can go for the PR.  In the meantime, I'm foam rolling as much as possible to keep my PF away!

While I'm sorry to hear that the PF (I think we should call it the f**king PF) reared its ugly head, it may be a blessing in disguise.  Taking a bit of a break last week should make it easier for you to set that PR.  Love your plan to head out slow, which should mean a more enjoyable run.  I look forward to the race report!

New PR for me.  3:45 a.m. wake up to get my 8.25 miler in before the wife had to leave at 5:20 for her crosstraining class at the Y.

She gets up early Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to workout.  She is amazing, has lost 135 lbs over the last 2 years.  she's 7 pounds away from her target goal weight.  A completly different woman inside and out.  We're doing our first training run together this Saturday afternoon, in preperation for a 4.3 mile charity run at end of month, Spokenya.  YA!

That said, I'm tired and going to try for a nap before work.

Wow, sounds like every one's doing great! (well, not sure how to pass judgement on your new PR Kevin. I like my sleep. Sounds like your wife is kicking butt!). Melissa, do little people take less time to take care of, or are they just better at staffing and scheduling in peds? Are you done after peds or will you get another marathon rotation? I'm supposed to be doing a stroke and stride tonight, but it does not sound like the weather is planning on cooperating. I guess I'll see. I wish I knew so I could bust out a workout sooner if it's going to get cancelled.

Still on peds. Another 7 weeks. This rotation just doesn't have call (with the exception of a week of night float) and I'm in clinic for a month. And I have a free day off today and another free day off in 2 weeks! Aka. Peds is the best rotation EVER. Not going to be a pediatrician, but I'm enjoying basically doing nothing all day. The most important thing I've done is check to make sure that babies have functional hips. Haha. I'm sure the hospital part will be a bit busier but I get to do a week of emerg! Woooooo woooooooo!

It's less call and more variety rather than being on ward dealing with ward crap for 8 weeks with 1/4 call. We do clinics/emerg/night float call/2 weeks ward. And kids generally Arnt sick. I prob spent 90% of my day yesterday just doing 3-6-12 mo old check ups. This is my last rotation of third year. 4th year we do shorter mandatory rotations (emerg, subspecialty surgery, subspecialty medicine, geriatrics) and the rest of the time is electives and residency interviews and our licensing exams. I'll be a doctor in less than a year. Scary!!!!

Holy Crap!  Getting up at 3:45 to do anything is impressive - but to do it in order to exercise is beyond my comprehension.  Sure getting the run in was great - but going to such lengths is something to be proud of.

And speaking of proud - you've gotta be out of your mind proud of your wife. 135 lbs = 540 sticks of butter.  Simply amazing!  You both have made major changes in your lives and doing it together must have really done a lot to strengthen you relationship.  Please let your wife know that her that my wife was incredibly impressed and inspired.  I hope you've got something planned to celebrate when she reaches her goal weight.

Good luck with the charity run!

Missy - So glad to hear that you are back on track!  Sounds like you got some great workouts in this week...

I got my quick run in yesterday.  Scott Jurek did an event at a local running store to promote his new book, Eat and Run, which included a 3-mile fun run followed by a talk and book signing.  So I did my 3-miler with the group, and got to high-5 Scott himself at the turn-around!  It was awesome because he led the group on the way out, but at the turn around, he stood there and high-fived every single runner who showed up to see him.  Then he ran back with the slowest runners.  Pretty cool guy.

Of course, I also bought his book and had him sign it.  Chris McDougal (author of Born to Run) was also there, but I'd totally forgotten to bring my copy of his book.  So he signed Scott's book for me.  So cool.

I'm really excited to read Scott's book.... As a vegetarian endurance athlete, he kind of epitomizes what I'm trying to do.  It actually is making me consider doing an ultra marathon sometime soon.  Maybe after Chicago Marathon, I'll continue my long runs and start doing back-to-backs in the winter, and maybe find a spring ultra to do.  Assuming my PF doesn't bother me!

In any case, I'm thinking of scrapping the idea of PR'ing my half marathon tomorrow.  It's supposed to be 69 degrees at 7am when the race starts, and get to 80 by 9am.  I don't do so great in the heat, so I'll stick to my plan of keeping a moderate effort at the start and evaluate from there.  I'm definitely not expecting to run my fastest race.  I'll write a race report regardless of how I end up doing.

Tonight, I swim!  And if I feel like going out, I'll bike to one of the local street fests.

That's an awesome accomplishment your wife has done!

Morning All:  Just hopped on the scale this morning and discovered that I had lost another pound.  That make's 75.6!  3 more to go and I will no longer  have an over weight BMI.

How am I gonna celebrate? I'm off to run a 5 k with my three kids!

I wish you well on the Half.  Just go out and run your race and see what happens!  Ultra-marathoning sounds intense.  Trainig, pacing and nutrition must play a huge part in anything over 26.2.

Morning All:  Just hopped on the scale this morning and discovered that I had lost another pound.  That make's 75.6!  3 more to go and I will no longer  have an over weight BMI.

How am I gonna celebrate? I'm off to run a 5 k with my three kids!

Congratulations on the weight loss.  Good on you getting out with the kids and getting them involved with the fit life.

On that note, my wife and I are doing our first workout together today.  We're running the 4.3 mile course of the race we're signed up for in July.  I'm so proud of her.

Missed my 2800 yd swim yesterday due to missing my alarm.  That's me, wake up at 3:45 to get my run in one morning, then stay up too late and oversleep the following morning.

Oh well.  I've got a s/b/r practice course laid out for Sunday.  I plan on swimming a mile for my first OWS at a local lake (we'll see how that goes).  Then I'm going out for a 35 mile ride after practicing getting out of wet suit.  Then I run 4.5 miles.   This workout is in my HIM plan and will be my longest workout to date, so I'm looking forward to all the learning about transition, attrition, and nutrition.

Did I mention earlier that I had just slapped a set of T1 aero bars on my road bike.  WOW, It took it from a Chevelle feel to a Cadilac feel while in the saddle.  Looking forward to testing them out on the longer ride tomorrow.
