Good morning, all!

I hope everyone had a nice weekend of family activity and training.

First off, Jeff, solid numbers. I hope to one day stand on the podium and receive an award for a top 3 finish. I bet that is an amazing feeling. I don't know if I will ever get one in a tri, might be a 5k or something.

I am excited because I got in two solid weeks of training and getting back to normal. I did an easy 4 mile run on Friday. Averaged just under 9 minute miles. I hit the road Saturday for a 40 mile ride and enjoyed it. I battled 15+ winds gusts that slowed me down a lot but finished in 2:40. That is a slower pace of 15mph but with weather conditions, I can't say much. The wind is my natural resistance that I fight every ride. Math queston- I weigh 150 lbs. If I am pedaling at 17 mph and heading into a 17mph wind, how fast am I going if there is no wind?

Everyone share what you did with a family member/friend and what training you did over the weekend. I spent most of the weekend preparing our nursery for the arrival which is about 9 weeks away! All training willl cease to exist!

I concur with Scott, what did you eat for breakfast? What kind of shoes did you have on? What was the road like? What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow??? Too many variables!

As far as yesterday's workout I got in a 30 mile hilly ride and bricked it into a 2000 swim (I had to do them in this order as the pool didn't open until 9 am).  Then in the afternoon I ended up relaxing with my boys and doing a little clean up in the house getting ready for the end of the school year (this Friday, and no I'm not ready!), and them being home all the time. We had to consolidate the legos so that humans could actually get into more of their functioning play area!

Next weekend is going to be an interesting one for me? A friend made me aware of a tri training that's going on this Saturday and invited me to tag along. The group is training for a 1/2 Ironman but they are doing the training in loops. This is good for me because I'll be able to jump in and do what I can (I'm not up to those distances yet.) They have it marked out for a .6 mile lap in the open water, 29 mile bike, and a 10 K run. I figure I'll do a lap of each, rather than the 2 they'll be doing. If I'm feeling good I may keep going in the water and on the bike, but I can guarantee you this turtle won't be doing the 13.1 mile run! Gives me a good opportunity 2 weeks prior to my official first tri. I can also see how much more time I have to log in the driveway with transition training!

Last note, Jeff? Those times are INSANE! Congratulations! Crazy numbers and I'm very very jealous! Good job!

Just a reminder that it sounds like their training workout is only a 6.2 mile run. Sounds like a great opportunity!

You got it! They are doing 2 laps about 10K each (they'll have to pick up the extra .7 somewhere to get up to the half). I will be bailing after the first lap or when the Garmin hits 6.1! Laughing

Race Report: Deer Creek OLY Tri

Time: 2:56:47 1st Place!! in Clydesdale 3, 225+ (XL 3)

Swim 1500M: 42 mins, NOT GOOD. First of all, I was like 1 of 10 without a wetsuit (500 competetors total) The water temp was 69 degrees, I thought it felt good, I was really nervous about that, Turns out I was making a mountian out of a molehill!!! I Had lots of trouble in the beginning of the race. I drank a lot of water during the swim (didn't help that there were small white caps). The second lap went better but still SLOW. I guess that means I need to work on the swim more!!!!!

Bike 40K:  76 min, Bike went well! Started out slow first with my chain popped off right at the bike mount line. Fun stuff. I only got passed 4 times but I passed alot of cats (love that feeling).

Run 10K: 57 min, Not what I was hoping but it was under an hour. Had some cramping issues in my leg.

JEFF- Nice race too bad you couldn't do the swim, Congrats on the 2nd place finish!!!!

Hope you all had a great weekend and a good week of training too!!!

Scott,

What was the name of that formula to calculate your endurance curve to project training levels?

I have my mile and 2 mile numbers and want to plug then in - or do I need more?

Is there a link I can do some reading and input my stats?

Thanks

Nice race, Caleb!!!

I just signed up for 2 tris today and then had a super-crappy swim. Oh well, maybe next time will be the time I get it right.

Swimming:  Critical Swim Speed

Bike:   Critical Power

Run:   Critical Velocity

My coach has sent me a spread sheet where I just plug in the times and it spits it back at me with training speeds.  I will ask him if I can share it.

Another place you may want to try is the mcmillan running formula.  http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/calculator  if you put in a recent time it will come back with training paces.  This one is also very helpful.

I also wanted to add this link.  http://www.physfarm.com/store/  the books here are a must read for all triathletes imo.  This is the main driving philosophy behind what my coach does and why I chose him.

Good morning peeps!

Just in from a 27 mile ride. A little chilly this morning and now I'm famished. I'll also share the meat of last night's swim workout ... my coach worked me hard. After a warm up and a few 50s, he threw in this set: 3 x [4x50 @ :50, 2x100 @ 1:45, 1x200 @ 3:25]. Mommy.

Troy, I know we have talked about our routines and when we do things but to have 27 miles in the books by 6:45- you are a rock star. How was your pace? Do you like riding in the dark? I don't really like it plus I fear stuff on the road I might not see. I have lights on my bike but use them more in the evenings when it is getting dark, not getting light! Plus, it is chilly.

I need to go out and take an early morning ride and see what my fresh legs can do. I was surprised at my speed in my tri back in march. I was biking at 8:08am. I always have better run times in the morning. I guess I would have  better bike times as well. I don't train until 4:30 in the afternoon. I wonder what % my batteries have left in them late in the day?? Would I swim faster earlier? I might not change my routine but could try to throw in some early morning short tests more often. Very interesting....again Troy, you inspire me. First it was shorts only over 32 degrees. Now I need to get my lazy a$$ out of bed!

Ashley ... it would have been light enough to ride by 4:45, but I left at 5:00am. Pace was in the 17.5mph neighborhood with some solid climbs. I knew I wanted to ride this particular peninsula/bay for the early morning views ... it was a bit longer than I had guestimated in my head, but now I know I can handle that, maybe even 30 miles, for a pre-work ride and still have time to get ready at a leisurely pace.

I really do love my early morning workouts. I'll happily run in the dark, but have had to wait until now for it to be light enough to ride. I plan on taking full advantage of these early morning sunrises with my bike this summer.

Tonight is my first run of the summer 5k trail series (3rd of the series, but I didn't run them due to the marathon). I may have trashed my legs a bit too much, so I may not have it in me for an all-out effort. Which is probably good, so I can be careful of the ankle for another week.

WINNER! WINNER! CHICKEN DINNER! Great job Caleb! All you guys are tearing it up, putting even more pressure on us newbies! (this is a good thing!)

Last night my sons started swim team. There is one lane open to the general pop for swimming laps so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. Getting in the water at the same time as 60-80 8-10 year olds was interesting? It was like someone chummed piranha filled waters! I took it as good practice for staying focused when you start your swim with all the excitement (which truth be told I didn't do so good, took me about 8-10 laps to get into my groove.)

Today, I just got in a nice 20 mile ride at lunch. Finally getting used to the shoes. Was able to beat my best pace on this route and keep my average over 18 mph. It's got about 4 nice hills on a 4 mile loop so I was real happy with that.

Now I have to get back to focusing on the run and doing things to make my slow butt move faster!

Ashley - I agree with Troy, morning workouts make the whole day a little brighter. I also find that when I knock out a morning workout I'm much more apt to throw in another one later in the day (should time allow). Lastly, if you get up early enough, all the kids are still sleeping! You'll need to probably pick up this trick soon!

Happy training everyone!

-Matt

Awesome! Thanks

On another note, I think it was you telling me to slow down my running a few weeks back. Well it is finally paying off. Went for a nice 6.5 mile run this morning and heart rate stayed low for the whole run. I even found my self able to speed up in places because my HR was dropping down to zone 1. Base training is really paying off.

So ... I had my first trail race in about a year tonight. My Plantar Fasciitis kept me off the trails for nearly all of last year's season. I forgot how much they hurt.

I ran a 19:01 5k a few weeks ago. Today I ran a 25:03 on the trails. Definitely still feeling the marathon and this morning's ride, but I need my trail legs (and trail lungs) back PRONTO!!! I had zero climb in me tonight.

A lot of familiar faces out in front of me who I can usually beat handily.

Humbling.

Just the fact that you were out running and completed the race is inspiring to me!  ..and that you did a trail race that fast!!  Now I'm itching to get out for a run after work!!  I miss the trails, too!

First CDTC "practice" tonight.  A few panicks in the 1/2 mile swim at first, and about 2/3rd of the way thru I felt really crowded.

First time I rode the course on my new bike.  Felt great.

Didn't do the run.

Definately a wonderful club!

Cheers

You, sir, are a stud!  I plan on joining you folks for a few 5k's.  It wont be until July though.  I teach a class on Mondays and Tuesdays that will end the last week of June.  I just can't get in all my other workouts if I do that during the school year.  Looking forward to some good fun though.

I put a good old fashioned hurting on myself this evening.  I did a 5 minute all out power test.  I averaged 380 watts.  This is an improvement from my last test by almost 9 watts.  Small improvements.  They hurt sometimes.  Hope everyone is enjoying their day.

A leisurely swim today. 1100m in 28 minutes, minimal rest (about 10 seconds) every 100m. With my instructor away for 2 weeks I want to keep working on consistency with my balance and stroke. My breathing was much better today, swallowed a lot less water (almost none).

I'll head back in a few days, and do 200s with minimal rest in between.
