Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us?Day 30, run 30: 20 minutes / 2 miles after a 1 hour game of fairly competitive ultimate frisbee (i.e. speedwork). And ... I'm done. I will be taking a bit of a break from running at least until the end of the weekend. Big thanks to Muskrat37 and Left Brain for starting this thread: having this challenge was good for me. It helped me bridge from the marathon in mid-October to the half-marathon in mid-November. It kept me motivated to run lots, and I feel like my running definitely improved over the last month. But, at times, the desire to maintain my streak led to some decisions I should not have made, including frequent midnight runs at the expense of much-needed sleep (including one 11-mile run that ended at 1:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning). When I start my next run build, I'm going to have to develop some habits about running in the morning. I also think that one thing I've learned from the streak is that it's good to have a rest day each week; I missed that. My next build will probably use the BarryP six-run approach. I also want to explore some other activities - review Wife's yoga tapes, expand my experience with the Sufferfest videos, and reintroduce myself to the pool. I can't do those things and maintain a daily run. Also, I don't want to start counting winter ultimate frisbee games as a run (as I did this summer during marathon training, to my detriment). Over the next few weeks I'm going to step away from any sort of structured training and just burn some calories when the urge strikes. This will provide me with a good opportunity to review what I've done this year and what I want to do next season. I have a couple of weeks before I need to start training for the Around the Bay 30K in late March. To everyone else, whether approaching the magical 30 days, a whole year (wow!) or any other goal: good luck, and thanks for being there for the last month! |
