Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC?? When I read the following, it resonated with me -- maybe because of all this talk about predator Grace and her prey poultry. It is written by William Logan in his book of poetry criticism, "The Undiscovered Country". "Reading Jorie Graham's poems in "Never" is like watching a slow-motion nature documentary where an anaconda ever so lazily disarticulates its jaw and inch by inch, millimeter by millimeter, swallows a goat." Just so you know. |

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel a bit better about myself now. I did a 7 mile 2% incline ride on the trainer (32 min) then jumped onto the treadmill for a 3 mile 2% incline run (17 min 15 sec). The run was a new PR for me but I was really out of breath after that and had to force myself to keep walking and breathing after. My average HR was 179, max 189. I ran the first mile at 7 min/mile, then gradually increased the speed whenever I felt better, and ended up at 5.13 min/mile. The last half mile was torture but I stuck to my form. I'm trying to 'fall forward' and let gravity do the work - something that I picked up from you all and reading further at the Chi Running site. And it feels good. I'm falling behind on my swimming time though.

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() stevebradley - 2009-02-25 7:46 PM GRACE again - Two things: (1) As for the weights and you being a lump o' aches, just back off for a few days, allow all muscle soreness to retreat, and then start in again at half the intensity fo the recent session.... (2) DON'T DESPAIR about never being able to do 600m in a reasonable time.... STEVE, Thanks for the great advice! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GRACE - Huh. I have no troubles with my jaw-unhingeing abilities, but I just CAN'T get that damn goat down! Wow! Those run times continue to be very impressive, especially on the 2% inclined 'mill. And, I'm not at all surprised (you're not really, either, are you?) by those HR numbers. Do you have any idea what your maxHR is? It might be worth it to try and get a grasp on your heart rate zones. There are a lot of easy-to-execute "field tests" available for this, and I can give you the guidelines for some if you want. I think I posted one to Lisa a few weeks ago; I'll try to track that down and refer you to it. "I'm falling behind on my swimming time though." SEE THE NEXT POST! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LINEAR TRAINING Sadly, that is an oxymoron. As much as we desperately want - NEED!? - our training to be linear, it nevers works that way. Our training, and the results of our training, ebb and flow, and for most of us this periodically becomes a cause for discouragement and self-flagellation. By linear training, I mean two things: that we can continue building on the distance and intensity of our training, and that our results continue to show steady and almost unrelenting improvement. For the former, life gets in the way in the form of other commitments, injuries, periodic times of ebing unmotivated. For the latter, well, today's success doesn't necessarily lead to a further success tomorrow, and all-too-often doesn't even lead to the same level of improvement for quite some time. Were our progress steady and unrelenting, we would all be Chrissie Wellington, or Craig Alexander, oe Emma Snowsill, or Jan Frodeno! I am VERY guilty of this, even with a gazillion workouts under my belt. If I have a swim success one day, it floors me when I can't replicate it my next time in the pool - or from one length to the next!!. When I've run a certain route in an encouraging time, I expect the next time on that route to be AT LEAST equal to the previous one, if not better (one second better would be fine). In races that I've done more than once, I FULLY expect each subsequent race to be better than the last, and I have been known to figuratively whip myself raw when it works the opposite. What we all have to remember is that any and all of our work has a cumulative effect, even when that effect is not readily apparent from day to day, or even week to week. Our bodies are not perfect at remembering and replicating everything that has worked successfully, and, moreover, there are too many things that work beneath the surface to hinder unrelenting progress. Just because we think we feel great today, doesn't mean that our bodies are 100% ready to produce at a 100% level. So, PLEASE, don't get discouraged if you can't consistently meet a time or performance standard that you set yesterday, or a week ago, or last month! For most of you who are fairly new to this stuff, you WILL continue to demonstrate improvements over time, and the periodic plateaus, and even slumps, do not mean that you have hit your peak and that it will all degenerate from this point on. You all have age on your side, and the "upside" for each and every one of you is quite considerable. Be patient with yourselves, and as long as you continue to work consistently and systemically, those improvements will continue for many, many years. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS (and anybody interested in using Infinit) - (1) The thread at www.slowtwitch.com that is pertinent has now dropped to page 9 of the main tri forum. The author is JerseyQuaker, and the time of the last post was Feb. 24, 6:16. (2) To see how using the sliders plays out by way of "nutritionals", you can check out my more recent "history" at two sites: www.infinitnutrition.ca and www.infinitnutrition.com. The ca one is my more recent ordering site, while the com one goes back 2 or 3 years. To access this info, if you're interested, click on "my account", and then in the next fields use [email protected] and longspur. You'll then get choices for formual file and current formula. Clicking on these will bring up the slider settings, and at the bottom of these will be a bar, under the flavor choices, for "nutritional info". This brings up a screen with all of the ingredients of that particular formula. (Some of my older formulas, although geared to longer races, do not emphasize proteins and amino acids, as do some of the newer formulas, and it interests me to see how this affects the nutritional data. Talk about being a nerdy geek!!) (3) There is absolutely nothing wrong ![]() ![]() Edited by stevebradley 2009-02-26 8:03 AM |

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() stevebradley - 2009-02-26 7:58 AM GRACE - ..... Do you have any idea what your maxHR is? It might be worth it to try and get a grasp on your heart rate zones. ... STEVE, I found this BT article by Scott Herrick a while ago for determining maxHR, but never got round to doing it http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/scott%20herrick/hrmoniterparti.ht... . Let me know what you think, and I'll make sure to nail down my maxHR today. This past month I've been doing it by perceived effort, and it's been working out ok, except where I start to get competitive and push myself beyond the aerobic treshhold! I posted a while back complaining that my HR monitor was wonky because it said I had a maxHR of 225 one time. And I wasn't really killing myself or anything on the treadmill so it must have been an anomalous reading. I've not recorded such a high HR since then and my average running HR is usually less than 170 (plus I can still talk during the run). So yeah I would be very interested in determining my maxHR.

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() mindymcc - 2009-02-26 8:41 AM Wow - I am impressed with those times. I will be very happy if I can get to 10 minute miles! MINDY, Thanks! I can barely believe it either, neither could Spencer, since I was running 30 min 5 Ks two months ago. Spencer is scratching his head trying to figure out how I manage to beat his times, and I am positive that it is largely due to the warm up that I do prior: 5 m walk, 5 m jog, 5 m walk, stretch, 5 m walk. Then run. After the run, I walk 10 m and stretch. Also, I have picked up so many useful leads and tips from our Amazing Group here. The heel vs ball strike discussion was very helpful, the Chi-running, barefoot running and nutrition posts were also really enlightening. Now when I run, I keep my upper body esp shoulders relaxed, lean forward as far as I dare, and keep my legs moving to keep myself from falling over. Also, I am much more aware of the need to refuel regularly, so I have been practicing eating and drinking (soft foods) while running. This is a big departure from how I used to do things - previously I would run on an empty stomach. Now I see that I will bonk if I attempt to go longer distances. I am very grateful for this group! Thanks all!

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GRACE - Many thanks for pointing out that Scott Herrick post - it is maybe the best summary of this stuff that I have seen. IF YOU FEEL UP TO IT, do the test today. But if it was yesterday that you did the 2% 'mill session, you might want to wait a day before doing the HR test; your results will be a bit more accurate if you're moserately rested. But, if you do it today, let us know the results. Curious minds want to know! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Guys! I'm playing hookie tonight! Don't tell anyone! Steve- Thanks for the link to the SlowTwitch forum - I headed over there and read the thread. It was really helpful and made me think ahead about how I might want to use the InfinIT once I get some - i.e. how to mix the bottles, how many bottles to have, etc... Right now, my bike only has one bottle holder on it - I'm guessing I might want to have a second put on. Truth be told, I'm not that great at riding and drinking at the same time when I'm out on the road Also, thanks for the pointer to the Team Tibco article! Those women are definitely amazing - role models for me. I definitely self-identify as a nerd and a geek - I'm all about gadgets, I love reading, and I actually enjoy the intellectual challenges of law school (the social aspects? not so much). This summer I was working 50-hour weeks and training for Chicago - I was usually up at 5:30 to get my run in by 6:45-7, so I could be out the door by 7:30 (Jersey traffic!) I think my life this semester would be 100x easier if I could treat my school day like a normal work day. That would be totally possible (i.e. up at 7, workout, leave for school at 9, come back at 6ish), if I didn't have these stupid night classes! They're throwing a wrench in everything... Bah. Oh well, classes end late April, I'm done with exams May 11th, graduation is May 24th! The end is near Lisa! Mark your calendar for next Thursday since you're a week behind me in the HIM plan! Today was an intense day - fun, but intense! It's 75 minute run, then 20x75 swimming (plus warm up and cool down). The run is with intervals, which I loved. I think it was the most intense day yet in the training plan! And the weather tomorrow is supposed to be awesome! I was thinking of switching my 2-hour Saturday ride with tomorrows swim workout to take advantage of the 60-degree weather tomorrow is supposed to bring! Enjoy it Grace - ok seriously, what is your secret! Haha - your running times are amazing! Sax - Those pictures make me JEALOUS. Lisa and I are praying that the weather around here warms up sometime soon. Until then, keep posting pictures of sunshine - it reminds me that sunny, warm places do exist! Obviously, I'm exaggerating a little Well, I think that's my update for now? Since I skipped my class tonight, I'm going to go crawl into my bed and go to sleep early |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - Well done on playing the h-word tonight! Just what the doctor ordered?? Just quickly, though, as I'm off to bed soon myself: At Bassman, you'll be fine with just one bottle cage. But for Moosey, think of one or two more drink receptacles, giving you at least three. Do you have aerobars on your bike? If so, one of those Profile Design "bottles" that wedges between the aerobars and has a long straw is an excellent investment. These provide easy hands-free drinking, and also work great for sticking gels and the like into - both before and after using them (the gels, that is). Do you still want a sampler of drink powders? I have a swack of them just about all set to go, so instruct me if you want them. And congrats on doing the plan today with great glee! That is a pretty intense day, as neither the 75-minute run nor the 20 X 75 swim is anything to sneeze at just on their own. Well done! |

My secret is that I don't run 75 minutes at 5.13 minutes per mile hehe. In fact, I have never run anything close to 75 minutes in recent memory... or in any memory! (...after intervals in the highest gear he has you jump off your bike and do 3 sets of 10 lunges each leg). i opted out of the lunges (sore hip), but watched ryan do them |
