Sulcus - 2009-05-20 12:08 AM

Okay, I’m reaching way back and hitting the weight question that Cat posed to us earlier.  I’ve given up on the weight loss thing, to some extent, and am just trying to train properly at the moment.  I haven’t gone crazy and I am still watching what I eat, but I have gotten off the “what do I weigh” right now bandwagon.

That being said, I’ve been slowly but steadily losing weight to the tune of 11 lbs in 2.5 months.  I won’t break any records but the scale is moving in the right direction, at least.

I also am TOTALLY a boredom and stress eater.  The best thing about training with a long commute is that I have far less time to plant myself on the couch, get bored and then stuff my face.  My stress eating appears to be hereditary because my father is all about stuffing himself when times are difficult.

Fortunately, I have discovered a way to use my Catholic guilt against me (hey, my family does it enough, why can’t I?).  When I buy a bag of anything, such as peanuts or pretzels, I take some time while watching TV to weigh it out into servings and then put them into snack bags.  Not only does it help me realize what “a serving” actually is but it gives me a second to pause and think about whether I really want another one.  If I do, I have to consciously get up and walk to get another one.

I’m probably not exaggerating when I say that doing this has saved me thousands of calories in absent minded eating.

Shawn - Ive used your trick in the past to package up snacks. Especially things that arent so good for me but can be managed within my diet like WW cookies and jelly snakes. If there is a whole packet open I will graze my way through it... but if its in lots of little packages Im more likely to eat just one or two!

On your weight loss.... I would never suggest hopping on scales more than once a week maximum... youll just drive yourself crazy otherwise! In terms of clothes... they definatley tell you what is going on For better or worse!

The rate you are loosing weight at is really healthy and shows that you are clearly doing the right things because it is slow sustained loss so I wouldnt change a thing except for the small gradual changes you are making towards a healthier lifestyle.

Keep up the good work!

Congrats everybody! Looks like everyone is progressing their own ways. Personally I hate scales, I just let my clothes tell me where I'm at. So far I'm down about a size, many more to go.I have radically changed my eating habits so I'm sure I'm heading in the right direction. Thanks everyone for all the interesting posts and best of luck this tri season!

Not a HIM... I watched one, that was painful enough. They were biking up a hill at the end of the course.... And they didn't look happy. LOL

I need to find a little sprint tri around here. Uh, and get a bike.

Uh, and I need to find some hills to train on, for the next 5K that I want to do.

Well I would suggest a super sprint or sprint for your first triathlon... wasnt suggesting a HIM

Although maybe once puppy has done one he can inspire (motivate/coach/cajole) me to get my act together... ummm... perhaps...

Pity you arent here... I could lend you a bike!

I could do the swim portion of a *super sprint* (probably).... After the swim though, I'm pretty much toast. LOL

Thanks for the bike lending offer! I'll be there as soon as I can to borrow it.

(Row, row, row your boat.....)

You could do the run... 5k is the full sprint so you could swim AND run... just need a little bike time

Or find someone who rides a bike to do that bit for you...

So in other words, I'd do the swim.... then have recovery time until I needed to start the run?

OK. I just need to find a really slow cyclist. LOL!

There's a few events around here that are 500 meter swims, 8 mile bike rides and 2 miles runs.  I know you could do one of those Dee!

I don't know NC at all but are you near one of the Colleges/Universities down there?  It's the time of the year for those kids to be having a fire sale on most of what they don't want to take home, now that the school year is over.

Or you could just hop on the 10 year old mountain bike and be about an aero-dynamic as an anvil, just like me when I ride!

Wow... just now able to come up for air! Look at what all I've missed!

Work has been ridiculously stressful for the last couple of weeks. We basically published three issues of the magazine in 2 weeks, where normally we get to do one every 2 weeks.

I've done a few workouts during that time, but nothing exciting. But I'm getting back on track now.

And I'm surprised that, in all the craziness and stress-eating, I haven't gained any weight. Phew.

I'm going to spend the rest of the afternoon catching up on the last 10 pages of this thread. I hope everyone is doing well. Thanks to everyone who sent me an inspire over the last couple of weeks. I actually read them, even if I wasn't working out or posting.

Wow, y'all picked up again!

I am really out of the loop. My workouts have been few and far between the last few days. My dad is in the hospital and is having bypass surgery tomorrow. So, i am just trying to not sweat the workouts, as they are just one more thing to worry about right now, and Dad is the most important thing.

I will be trying to wade through these soon. Hope you are all doing well in your training!

I'm not laughing....

My mountain bike is more than 15 years old. And hasn't been used in more than 15 years.

When I brought it to the LBS, they said, "Uh yeah. We *could* fix it up for you. But you'd *really* be better off buying a new *anything.*"

Well Dee depending on when/what you want to do about the bike you could get a hybrid or something just so you could participate... but I do like the idea of doing the rounds of the garage sales etc and seeing whats on offer...

Classifieds etc might have people trying to get rid of something for next to nothing too... hybrid would be fine for your first rce!

I worked out tonight with a local tri club at a track. I kept within my zone and had a good time and a good workout. My knee didn't hurt much either. On the other end I did a water aerobics class in the morning ith the octogenarians.

Great news about the knee... mine has been cranky off and on since I took it for a ride on Saturday... silly thing!

Lisa,

There are two that I know about this summer (one was on April 18th).

The first is the Independence Triathlon:
http://www.triandduit.com/IndependenceTri/home.html

The second is the Mini MightyMan:
http://www.eventpowerli.com/events/

I'm going to see how my first one goes but I might do one of them.  I'm toying with the idea of doing one sprint a month, if things go well.  By the end of the summer, people will be sick of seeing me pant along course all over Long Island.
