Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED The January "cooking at home" challenge took a hit today (not off to a great start!) because we found out that my husband is going to be confirmed in his new job. He's been under threat of redundancy since the beginning of October and we didn't know if he'd have a job past the end of January. Today he was told he'll be getting a new and better job. So yay! Obviously we went out for dinner to celebrate, so expect more weight increases tomorrow The thing I'm most excited about (apart from not having to support both of us on my measly income) is that this means that we can do IM France. Just have to wait till after I get paid next week and then I'm entering! |

I am considering IM France for 2013 (the other candidates are IM Mt Tremblant in Canada and St George in Utah). I have heard that it is a wonderful race with the most incredible scenery of the entire Ironman circuit and only one climb on the bike (although 56 miles long, hehe ).The January "cooking at home" challenge took a hit today (not off to a great start!) because we found out that my husband is going to be confirmed in his new job. Regular 200 Colorado Springs | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED I have to admit I'm jealous of those doing IM France. I attempted it in 2008 (DNF) on almost no training but it is a great course and I'd love another crack at it one day. I definitely don't recommend doing an IM on no training. I only swam once in the 6 months before the race and my longest ride was about 60 miles. I'd love to do it with proper training because the bike ride was quite possibly one of the most beautiful rides I've ever done. The swim was good with the exception of the really large jelly fish and the rocks on the beach for the swim start. I definitely recommend it! Like Jennie, I did my hill repeat run workout today. 7 hills @ 0.18 mile each with slow jog for recovery between each repeat. With warmup and cooldown it totaled 48:34. - Gabe 4 days 9:07:48" - Chris 4 days 4:58'05" - Scott 4 days 4:20'57" - Elizabeth 4 days 4:00 - Rachel 4 days 3:56'37" - Ernesto 4 days 3:40'21" - Jim 4 days 3:33'38" - Joyce 4 days 3:30:15" |

In terms of avoiding anaerobic work, should strength training be avoided? Does it negatively impact the building of an aerobic base?I've been adding strength training to my regime and following Friel's framework, I do lift and core work 2 to 3 times a week. I keep the weight low and usually do 3 sets of 15 per exercise. I never to lift to failure or generally do not feel any soreness the next day. Thoughts?Joe P Edited by JoePetto 2012-01-05 7:48 AM |

Master 1780 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED Not a good day so far. Woke up at 6:00 am and realized I forgot to turn on my alarm, so quickly out of bed and a quick 10 min walk to the pool. Temps in the low 40s (expecting low 50s), and then I dip my foot on the pool and...even colder! No need to tell you I decided to head back home. So no workout this AM. Will try a quick 30 min run when the kids go to bed. I guess the pool is not heated when its this cold (as my wife so graciously put it "who is crazy enough to swim when is this cold?" - is this a hypothetical question?), so a little worry about my swimming going forward. Maybe once the temps go a little up I will brave the colder water temps...I remember not having an issue with cold water when I was a kid! So for now stuck in 4 days. |

Thoughts?Joe P I believe in the specificity of training, if you want to get good at climbing hills, climb hills. Some people thinks that squatting will make their legs stronger and this is true, but not specific for cycling.A strong core though is without a doubt really good for all three sports and strenght training is good for swimming but not bike and run. |
