Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? fishwallop - 2012-11-15 11:09 PM Day 30, run 30: 20 minutes / 2 miles after a 1 hour game of fairly competitive ultimate frisbee (i.e. speedwork). And ... I'm done. I will be taking a bit of a break from running at least until the end of the weekend. Big thanks to Muskrat37 and Left Brain for starting this thread: having this challenge was good for me. It helped me bridge from the marathon in mid-October to the half-marathon in mid-November. It kept me motivated to run lots, and I feel like my running definitely improved over the last month. But, at times, the desire to maintain my streak led to some decisions I should not have made, including frequent midnight runs at the expense of much-needed sleep (including one 11-mile run that ended at 1:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning). When I start my next run build, I'm going to have to develop some habits about running in the morning. I also think that one thing I've learned from the streak is that it's good to have a rest day each week; I missed that. My next build will probably use the BarryP six-run approach. I also want to explore some other activities - review Wife's yoga tapes, expand my experience with the Sufferfest videos, and reintroduce myself to the pool. I can't do those things and maintain a daily run. Also, I don't want to start counting winter ultimate frisbee games as a run (as I did this summer during marathon training, to my detriment). Over the next few weeks I'm going to step away from any sort of structured training and just burn some calories when the urge strikes. This will provide me with a good opportunity to review what I've done this year and what I want to do next season. I have a couple of weeks before I need to start training for the Around the Bay 30K in late March. To everyone else, whether approaching the magical 30 days, a whole year (wow!) or any other goal: good luck, and thanks for being there for the last month! Cool! Nice job! Good luck with your planned races and your training for them. Edited by Left Brain 2012-11-15 11:22 PM |

I needed that! Where's my beer?No calf pain when I run from hone- flatter at the start? Better surface? I dunno but may have to shelve lunchtime for evenings My calves will have noticeably more stiffness from a flat treadmill tempo session than with treadmill hills. And that's with equal time at effort, equal overall time running and efforts as comparable as I can tell using HR & RPE. Today they could handle going up a 6% hill at a faster pace (yes, pace) than the flats (though the rest of me sure was feeling it more on the hills). |

I know I probably should not be running this far but it is kind of habit now. I hope this works it's out in the next few days like a few a other nagging aches and pains have through out this streak. Do less! Can you ride a bike for more activity if you like? It's non-impact and can help work out the aches. You're operating in an area where such an ingrained habit could be detrimental instead of helpful.
I know do less but it is hard sometimes. I have run through several aches and pains during this streak and am hoping this one will fade over time. If I am still in as much pain after Sunday's long run I will dial it back for next week. I do not want to as I am training for a 50 mile ultra at the end of January and need the miles. |

Have never ran in below 35, but one of my most memorable runs was my Birthday run of 11 miles last year. It was 37 degrees out and poring down rain, and I loved every step. Awesome to see you still continuing your streak bud. I finished 11 miles for my B-day run last night (my new annual tradition). I run 11 miles on my B-day - it finishes at a Qdoba so I can get a big burrito, nachos and a beer. I like my new tradition! Not streaking anymore, but with today's 4.5 miles I will be at 34 miles this week. Last week was 30 miles. This is the most I have ever run, and I have the streak to thanks for getting me there. |

Maybe 20 miles in two days was not such a good idea. Have you considered spacing out the build-up days more? From what I can tell, you've done ~6 miles/day (painfully) the past week after the Ultra, then went right to an 8 and 12. What about dropping to ~30 min easy between each increase? Then fill those in a bit more to get yourself back where you want to be. As much as you need miles for the upcoming (longer) ultra, you need miles that you can handle easily to enhance the recovery. Once recovered, things will likely come back rather quickly. |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Thought I'd share - I ran Friday evening down the footpaths and then along the sandy beach trail. no calf pain at all. Saturday I ran in Shepparton, just on the local streets of suburbia. No calf pain. Sunday I ran along the road and some grass and gravel in Shepparton - no calf pain. My lunchtime runs are the only ones that cause pain. So today's lunchtime run, instead of going around the park I shall run along the street, just 10mins one way and 10mins back again. See how that goes. Could it just be as simple as the running surface in the park causing so many issues!? I will keep you posted. If that's just what's bothering me, then the streak will continue beyond 30 days. |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 24, ran around the outside of the park rather than the path inside - yeah a bit better. There's some inclines that just go on and on....maybe this isn't helping. But day 24 is in the bag. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 28 This is the second day so far that a planned run day wouldn't have worked out if not for this streak. I had a large dinner with a few beers with about 30 minutes of "digestion" time. I decided that I really was not up for an 11pm run so I went out. I am now debating the wisdom of that decision. |

Done felt decidedly 'ungood' Look ya'll.....here's my take on this, you do what you want. No beer until the workout is done for the day....that's it. It's a GOOD rule. I don't miss many beers, but I miss more beers than I do workouts, and that has suited me well for many years. I can't run after I've drank a few beers....maybe you are different, but I'm "pretty good at drinking beer" and I can't get it done. |

I was feeling pretty good after the 8 Saturday which I why I went out 12 on Sunday, I actually went out for 14 but cut it short. I am going to give it one more week to get to feeling better and if it does not then cut the milage back. |
