I really wasn't wanting to do it because my shin/calf was hurting and tight to start with, then two days before I managed to slam the car door on it, well, I should say a strong gust of wind slammed the car door. So I was all around not looking forward to it. But I couldn't let my buddy (DH) down so I sucked it up and did it. I think we ran over a mile straight before the first obstacle, so that was good for me, no walk breaks. The obstacles weren't too hard and it was kind of fun to have to rely on your buddy for some of them. I slipped at one point and knocked my knee pretty good, nice purple bruise from that, but now it matches my other leg where the car door got me! In the end I skipped two obstacles, one where you had to climb a rope straight up and ring a bell, I couldn't put a lot of weight on my lower leg and just gave up. The second, you had to walk up a wall at about a 45 degree angle, using a rope to pull up. Now normally I could do this, but since they were spraying soapy water on the wall to make it harder, and my shin wasn't feeling great, I thought it was a recipe for disaster so I didn't even attempt it Crawling through the mud was fun, cold but fun. Mud in Virginia is not the same as mud in NC (which is really sticky from all the red clay) so cleanup was easier than I thought it would be! The kids also did a mini muddy buddy race and they had a blast, even though it was a super short course! Good clean, er dirty, family fun!
Sounds like this was a blast! I want to do one of these when I work my way up millage wise. |

The heats started every half hour from 8am till 3pm! Crazy! A full day of triathlon. As a side note I caught bikes in T2 for a few hours. There were some SWEET bikes. I had no idea how light a full carbon bike really was.
Tom congrats on the 8K. Very excited for your tri. Go get em! Looks like you had a really good race. Your times are all great!!! Confession: After reading your race report I now know what 'caught bikes' means lol I was like caught bikes???? I thought you meant caught the fever for a new one... |

Sorry, yeah wasn't real clear on that one. When people dismount their bikes going into the run transition the bike "catcher" takes their bike. With so many heats going off all day there was not enough room to bring your bike back into transition. It may sound more chaotic then it is. It actually worked quite well. |

Yes, in hind sight, we sould have waited to wash off! Although it was sandy mud and prob wouldn't show up great in picks, not like the NC/GA red clay type mud! |

I'm getting back into the swing of training after a little time off after the tri two weekends ago. They just redid the bike route for the 70.3 I'm doing in the fall. On the plus side, they made it a circle, so there aren't the 6 turnarounds there were before to completely halt all momentum, so that's nice. On the downside, the new route is around 1300 ft of elevation change instead of 1100 ft from the previous route. Woohoo |

The key is making sure you get the long bike and run sessions in. How strong is your swimming? Gotta run to work now. I'll share more thoughts tonight. |

These can be as long as necessary, but at the moment they're 40 - 60 minutes depending in the discipline. My long swim will be Wed night and my long run and ride will be on a Saturday and Sunday morning. My long run at present is about 9 miles. My long ride has been inconsistent but will be 3-4 hours depending on where I ride. Thanks C |

How long are they, what days of the week would they be on, and what time of day would they be? That's definitely enough training time. You can even start incorporating bricks on Saturday or Sunday. From what I remember your swim is pretty strong, so you can probably get away with that one swim a week on Wed nights. (Again, depending on how strong your swim is). One option for the weekends might be to brick on Saturday, then alternate each week on Sunday with a long ride or long run. That way you aren't burning your legs out doing a long run every week. I think your training plan looks fine, and I think you'll have no problem finishing a HIM in March if you stick to it! Go for it!!! EDIT: I was typing this before I read your last post above. Chrispy, I read an article about "minimalist training" that goes against the norm of high volume training. Of course I have no idea whether it works or not, but according to the author, he's only spending 10 hours a week training and he's doing 9:30 IMs. So I guess it's certainly is possible. Cheers, Chrispy How long can you work out at lunch and what can you do? Run? Here is a link to the plan I started with for my two HIM's. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ar5EpJvYM2b1dEs0VjFhZlR... . I moved things around as my schedule dictated but tried to get the volume in. I didn't do much strength training and typically did 1-2 swim workouts per week instead of three. I think one swim, 3 rides and 3 runs should do it with a few bricks on the weekends. A fourth ride or second swim would even be better. The race time is a roughly 3:2:1 ratio with regards to time in each discipline ride:run:swim (give or take) so your training hours should be roughly the same. If you can get 30 - 45 minute runs in at lunch two days a week with a long run on the weekend and three rides during the week with a long ride on the weekend plus your long swim Wednesday night you'd be at 7 workouts and would be able to squeeze in a least one rest day. Notice how the plan build for three weeks then cuts back every fourth week. That's important to let your body heal. I know that's 8 workouts, not 6 but I'm not counting the lunch runs :-). |

I have a bike trailer but no longer have a bike to use it on, but I have a separate jogging stroller. My wife would be happy with me running 14 times/week because I always take at least one of the kids with me (sometimes both because I also have a double jogging stroller but I much prefer using the single jogger). Unfortunately for my wife I'd rather be mediocre at three sports instead of awesome at one...but still it's good to know I can always find time for at least one of the sports on a day to day basis. |
