Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - I have never met a Spinervals that is easy! They are all certifiable gut-busters, and like a lot of people I break them into parts - unless I am feeling about 150% at the start. A thread at slowtwitch had several posters who thought that, when Troy J. is walking around looking at people's computers and raving about the cadence and heart rates, that the values are not as high as he is saying. That might be, but I watch some of theose peole and they are riding a very high cadence, and sustaining it, it seems. I have never tried the Carmichael (CTS series) videos, but the feeling at slowtwitch was that they are better than the Spinervals. Have you ever seen one of them? Nathan info below. |

That IS a UVA "V" on the visor...in fact it is one of my favorite hats. I didn't go to UVA, but I've always been a fan for some reason...not sure why. I follow them in b'ball and football, but the area is beautiful and I've got some family there.
Seems like this place grows by about 5 pages per day~! |

Seems like this place grows by about 5 pages per day~! ....ooh, then you should also consider the charlottesville 10 miler. an awesome small town race with a pretty challenging course. I've done this one 3 times....... ......AND the charlottesville international tri. it is at walnut creek park. it's a gorgeous swim, hilly and challenging bike course through beautiful countryside and a TRAIL run. This was actually my first ows and my first olympic distance. really a beautiful race. i was thinking of adding this to my schedule this year because i have to redeem myself. as it was my first ows, i panicked and had to backstroke the whole thing. i still finished respectably, but I would like to do it again. instead of giving out medals, they have an open bar at the biltmore on the corner in the afternoon after the race. mmm, speaking of beer, it is pushing 5pm on friday. there we go! I second that!! Agreed! Lisa - you're so good at knowing exactly what I meant to say Missed todays workout - Friday swims are turning out to be impossible for me, so I might juggle it forward to Sunday. Or I might just forget about it Nathan - amazing profile - very inspiring Steve - No, I don't have aerobars on my bike - I just got the bike in January, so I'm still getting used to the whole set up. I found a few up on Craigslist right now - what are the advantages and disadvantages of using them? Does everyone use them? How long does it take to get used to them? The one problem I could potentially have (looking at the ones I see on Craigslist) is that I have little 'cheater' brakes on the flat part of my handlebar (in addition to the normal brakes) - I don't know if the aerobars would fit over those brakes? And yes, I'd love the sampler pack! My address is: Jessica Palmer 5715 Chapman Mill Drive, Apt. 200 Rockville, MD 20852 (since the only person that could conceivably stalk me is Lisa

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - Unless the missed workouts were identified as key ones, let them go. Or, if they are ones you REALLY want to do, then substitute them for the scheduled ones on Sunday. I don't think it is a good idea to piggy-back them, though, as something will get compromised. I certainly understand your angst about this, and if I had a nickle for every time I did NOT let a workout go, I'd be able to afford about 20 new tire tubes! Having said all that, in your case some of these workouts - I'm thinking specifically about an outdoor ride, weather permitting - just might be good therapy for all of the school pressures and commitments you've been facing. But if you're worried about losing ground on your training, that won't happen other than for some miniscule amount. Aerobars are useful, especially for longer races or training sessions. Although they take some adjusting to, getting into that "tucked" aero position and all, once there most people find it a very comfortable position to hold. As you will be on the bike at Moosey for 3 hours, it will be a big benefit to shift your upper body around some and avoid muscle tightness and cramping. The Moosey course is not the best course in the world to ride aero (Eagleman might well be the best for that!), but there are long parts of it - especially along the east side of the lake - where the aero position is higly advantageous. (As promised, though -- more about all that later!) I guess you know about the performance advantages of aerobars, so I won't belabor them here. I will add, however, that when in the aero position your are using different lower body muscles, so along with easing tightness in your upper body, you will be able to better distribute the work among different muscles in your lower body, and that helps with the run. And as I said yesterday, if spaced properly they can hold one of those Profile Design aerobar bottles, and you vcan ride and sip with impunity -- as well as carry stuff at the top of the bottle, nestled in with the yellow mesh thing. As you hunt for these, let me know what you're finding. I will also search a bit and see what's out there these days. But don't feell you have to go this route right now, especially if you feel you're still working to get used to the whole set-up of your bike. Finally, I'm not sude what "cheater brakes" look like. Are they expendable, do you think? Finallyfinally, I will get a bunch of stuff off to you next week, and I'll let you know when it gets sent. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ERIC - Glad you're back, glad you're well. How is the shin feeling? Building a house? As in, actually working at the construction of it? Hammer? Nails? Drywall? Electricity and plumbing? Yikes!! (Can any aspect of house-building be considered a viable form of cross-training?) ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Part of my avowed Mission Statement for this mentor group was to foster a bitter-free atmosphere, and I see I have strayed from my course by making you google a Celsius converter. OOPS! So, in the heartfelt spirit of preventing any further bitterosity, I will tell all that 7C is about 42F, and -18C is -1F. (I'm doing this by looking at our bilingual thermometer.) So, lest I be mistaken, that's a 43F degree temperature plummet. #@^#*+@$* As for living in Canada --- IT'S LYNN'S FAULT!!!!!!!! |

(I have had to work hard at quelling the anarchy in the ranks here that erupted when you made it known that you were spending three days in Arizona.) The above sentence displays sinful syntax, for which I apologize (but am too lazy to correct). Enjoy the long ride on your new baby!! Is this your first serious ride on it? WHEEEEEEE!!!!!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i did a 40miler two weeks ago but this will be my first 56. I will report back to tell how goes it. I will be riding along the PCH through the Santa Monica mountains and along the coast. As a hope to not cause any more unrest I will not take pictures this time. I am not sure the group will be so civil when they see warm pictures along the beach.
I am about to do something very bad tonight...after driving around LA what seems like all day in a 3hr traffic jam...I am going to bag the run/swim and opt for a massage. It's been a tough week and I think I need the rest.
Thanks for the compliments girls...but I wasn't a SEAL (they have huge issues with people misrepresenting so I am not going there). I mentioned "training for" but they decided to send me in another career field once I got my commission (they called it "needs of the Navy"

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SAX - No, no, not "very bad" at all; very wise, in fact. You're getting clear messages from your body, and you have everything to gain from listening to them - and following through on their expressed wishes! Looking forward to the bike report............and also wouldn't mind a few more photos. pretty please. I PROMISE I won't whine and moan, and I will urge the mid-Atlantic ladies to do the same. Okay? |

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() stevebradley - 2009-02-26 11:03 AM GRACE - Many thanks for pointing out that Scott Herrick post - it is maybe the best summary of this stuff that I have seen. IF YOU FEEL UP TO IT, do the test today. But if it was yesterday that you did the 2% 'mill session, you might want to wait a day before doing the HR test; your results will be a bit more accurate if you're moserately rested. But, if you do it today, let us know the results. Curious minds want to know! I just got done with the Max HR test: I did it on a 5% incline treadmill. MHR was 191. I actually didn't do a full out sprint for 2 minutes like I was supposed to. Once my breathing became labored, I upped the speed to 14.5 mph (or 4.13 minutes per mile) and held it for 2 minutes. I was supposed to keep going all out like this for another 1 minute but I was tiring and losing my form. So I stopped. That exercise was torturous. Unfortunately, I think I needed to push on for that additional minute to get my MHR. So I should probably do it again. I guess I get nervous about being able to stop when I need to, when I'm on a treadmill, especially sprinting. Tomorrow morning I'll try to remember to get my resting HR.
