Sulcus - 2009-05-20 7:31 AM Or you could just hop on the 10 year old mountain bike and be about an aero-dynamic as an anvil, just like me when I ride!
I'm not laughing.... My mountain bike is more than 15 years old. And hasn't been used in more than 15 years. When I brought it to the LBS, they said, "Uh yeah. We *could* fix it up for you. But you'd *really* be better off buying a new *anything.*"

Ouch!  I got a raised eyebrow but my bike's age worked in my favor since it is too old to have any fancy shocks or anything so they humored me.

I hope someone is selling something.  You've got a great bike resource in Cat!

Tonight I attended the Trek Triathlon Training Party at SBR Multisports in NYC with Sally Edwards. It was very informational as well as inspirational. Now I have another training regimen to follow that hopefully I can work into my current one. Her method is heart rate based and she handed out info on finding your true max heart rate and that the old 220 minus your age was just hooey.

Thats great!!!

There are some great articles on here about that too... 220-your age is definatley not the way to go if you seriously want to use this method to train.

Would love to hear about the information she shared with you if you have time to write down the key points!

Do you currently have a HRM? (Heart Rate Monitor)

Hrm - things have really slowed down around here lately (I blame Dee for actually working) so I have another question:

Rumor has it that Cat doesn't actually shower but (rather impressively, I might add) just licks herself clean.  Can anyone corroborate this rumor?

I'm away for the weekend but when I get back I'll try to write something up. I do have a Garmin 305 and 705 both with HRM and both are great to track distance, time, laps etc. but Sally told me about an inexpensive analog HRM that works in the water, so I ordered one. She said you have different max heart rates for swim, bike and run. The Garmin 305 has poor battery life so if I forget to charge it everyday or two it runs out of power.

Tomorrow I am going to go over the course of my first Tri which will be in August. I am in the Philadelphia area for the weekend and visited my favourite garden (in the states) this evening.

That advice is spot on...training zones for each of the sports tend to be different... higher for the running and lower for swimming due to the impact and muscle used in the sport.

Techinically your maximum possible HR is ALWAYS that same overall but you wont reach it as easily swimming as running if that makes sense so you work it out differently for training zones....

I dont use my HRM in the water but I know you can with some but I also dont train that way in my swimming as I swim train more traditional methods using sets, the clock, drills and distance.

Have a great time this weekend!

I wogged today. And I *heart* the interval times on my new watch. It's great for alternating walking and wogging. (I'm calling it a wog, because it's too slow to be a jog.)

You know Dee... a run is really anything where you dont have at least one foot touching the ground at all times.. so you are allowed to call it a run/jog or anything else you like

Well, as bizarre as it sounds.... After reading all the advice from this group.... I'm finding that I don't hate running.

In fact, I'm doing the June Run Challenge. Last year, I never would have done that. (I'd have done another swim one, instead. LOL)

(Edited because I really need to remove some of my sig lines. It's tough to tell where my post ends, and the sig lines begin. )

Yeah, this group is weird that way.  I certainly was straining during my run today but it didn't seem AS painful as it had in the past.

Three things I learned/confirmed from it:
1.  I've got to keep my feet moving quickly when heading downhills and not used my heels to brake so I can use gravity to my advantage for a change.  I was flying down a couple of hills!

2.  I look like a GIANT nerd in my compression socks, especially since I'm running all of 3 miles.

3.  Compression socks make my legs feel soooooo much better that I don't ever want to run without them.  I know that you have some lower leg pain so I'd suggest just giving them a try.  Even the relatively cheaper Craft ones at runningwarehouse.com help me quite a bit.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hooray for running down hills properly...amazing what a bit of momentum will do right?

Ive got calf sleeves and compressions socks...good stuff...

Now Im contemplating buying a pair of compression tights for running in and seeing how that goes...

Its great the running is coming together for the boht of you... I actually hate it a lot less than I used to as well...part of it is increased fitness and an awareness of how to pace myself...

Ive always said I hate running but I feel good when Ive done the workout..

Another thing you can do for compression stuff if go to the supermarket or places like Kmart or a chemist etc and go to the sock section there. They have compression sock/tights to help people with their circulation etc. Im told they are pretty good and a cheap alternative!

Ken Mierke's Book... it was published under a different name internationally to the US...

I think in the US it was called: A Triathletes Guide to Run Training...

My copy is called Triathlon Training: Running.

I just believe this guy knows what he is talking about so appreciated reading it...

Hi Group!!

I know it's been a while since you have heard from me!!  I'm looking forward to catching up on everyone's progress.  I unfortunately have fallen off the training wagon  I haven't trained in 3 weeks!

My first sprint triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, June 28th.  It's a Double Sprint so that means: 375 meter ocean swim, 1.5 mile run, 10K bike ride then another 1.5 mile run back and then you finish up by swimming another 375 meter ocean swim.

I have a question for the group:  I have 5 weeks left to attempt to train for this.  Is it unrealistic?  Should I cancel and get half my money back or should I train hard for these 5 weeks and see what happens?  I'm not in horrible shape, but not the best.  I'm 27, 5'3" and weight about 145 pounds so I am a little over weight.  I'm a strong swimmer, ok on the bike...not such a great runner.

I have another sprint triathlon scheduled for September 19th...should I just start focusing on this one now and not worry about the one the end of June?  Or should I use the one at the end of June as practice for the one in September.  I'm pretty much torn about what to do help!!

What is your fitness level Jess? Even though you have had a break in training do you think you could complete it if you train for the next 4 weeks? (I think you should taper and take it somewhat easy the week before). It is good that the run is broken up by the bike. I wish I had one like that. Are you worried about what time you will do or do you just want to do it? For my first one (in August) I don't care about the time, I just want to finish. I say go for it if you think you can finish in a healthy manner.
