Matt - nice thumb. Good luck with the recovery. I did the same when I was snowboarding a few years back and decided to keep going with a glove over my split in spite of the doctor's orders and I never got full range of motion back.

I track progress by logging everything in Garmin training center and reviewing it on occasion. Since I just started swimming I just log the distance but not the time, for bike and run I log pace, cadence, speed, HR. I plan on upgrading to the Forerunner 410XT if my season goes a planned and I continue in this sport and I imagine I will start logging and analyzing a whole lot more.

Tracking progress - most is done by pace and comfort of it.  I try to balance intensity with distance in all portions.  1-2 times a week I try to do high intesity in each to expand my capability.  As each week passes I look for it to get easier or manageable along with other items.

My historical training has always been focused on intensity.  The crical velocity graphs did not apply to my Half time - it was not transferable to my marathon way back when (yes glory days) as the longest run I did was only 13 miles (rookie mistake)......so the next time I worked on intensity plus distance with several 20 milers......Heartbreak Hill was still a bear but I ran it!!

Each week I add one new dynamic or faster interval to the work out to push myself.

David, I have the Garmin 410 and love it! I have small wrist and was afraid it would be bulky but it fits great and massive amounts of data to analyze. Plus when I do brick workouts I just have to press one button to change sports

As for websites, I haven't quite decided what I like the best. I currently track everything on runkeeper, training peaks, and garmin connect. I like features of all of them

I currently use and abuse the 305 and it also does multipsport but cannot handle swimming (indoor or outdoor). Do you use the 410 for swimming?

I measure progress one x-ray at a time....

on a more serious note, I have a tendency to watch my weekly numbers rather than one offs. I find that some days I have better workouts than others, but when I look at the weekly totals in comparison they give me a better understanding of where I'm gaining, or not.

Feeling the soreness today from the fall, they didn't give me any meds and said to just take motrin/aleve/tylenol which I took as a good sign (nothing major). I took some last night prior to bed, more precautionary than anything. Today I'm just dealing with it. Nothing major, just annoying soreness pain. Now I just have to fight the temptation to try and move the thumb tip and prove it still works! Monday I'm in to see the orthopedist and hopefully get this week timeline knocked down and get back in the pool and on the saddle!

Today was a planned day off getting ready for tomorrow. Still bummed that's not gonna happen. Oh well, off to see Prometheus tonight since I'm good for sitting on my butt and not moving.

Yes and No. Since I am such a beginner when it comes to swimming I use it but the data is meaningless right now. I plan to do some open water swims next month and those will be pretty cool to see on the map

First real running in the rain experience this morning. Was pouring down rain and dark outside but still managed a 9:30 pace over a 5k which is a great for me. I probably would really enjoy the rain had it not been dark outside. I spent too much time trying to navigate around the rushing water than enjoying the run. I need a better headlight.

I love running in the rain ... I this is my headlamp: Linky-Poo

It's an excellent headlamp and is rechargeable. Very bright and you won't even notice it.

Did some hill repeats on the bike, then just some easy riding to make it an 18ish mile ride.  My outdoor pool is going to have 1 hour of adult lap swimming saturday and sunday - so I am swimming tomorrow.

Hope to get some video footage for reviewing my poor swimming form.  Perhaps we can use an online storage to share such footage and offer critiques?

Be careful out there!

Just gonna brag here ... with tomorrow's run, it looks like I'll hit 12 hours of training this week. That makes me feel all studly inside.

I second that. That is very impressive. I know you are seeing the fruits of your labor and makes you want to go even more. I'll hit the 6 hour mark today which I feel good about. I'm thrilled to average an hour a day. This is my third week in a row of solid training (6 days a week) so I am pumped!

I am going to do a short medium intensity ride this morning and attack some hills and then follow up with a slow 4-5 mile run.

What does everyone have on tap today?

Two weeks till race day!

Some Gear questions:

Does it make a huge difference having a Tri Shirt? All I have are bike jerseys and didn't want to spend another $50 on a race day jersey. Is it mainly for range of motion for swimming?

Also do you guys train in race day conditions? In other words I usually have at least one workout per week when I wear my Tri shorts and no ear phones since I won't be listening to music during the race. My other rides I like having the music during my rides and runs.

I don't ever wear headphones for anything regarding training. When I am out running or biking, I want to be aware of all the sounds around me. I like to be alone with my thoughts and the concentration of my environment. I feel like being distracted by music is like texting/driving. Thats my opinion and I know some will disagree. I never want to say, "I didn't hear that person/car b/c I had my headphones in. I ride/run on a trail that is used by bikers/walker/runners. I can't stand when people don't hear you coming up and offer them a courtesy 'passing on your left'. When I am running, I want to hear bikes coming up behind me so I can move over to the side and let them pass. If you are on a treadmill or in a gym, music is fine. Other than that, I stay away.

I have two tri-suits. I do wear one to train when I do bricks- especially swimming. I'll wear my practice onesie today when I ride and then run. I wear it because it is the perfect attire for every leg of the race, super comfortable, and keeps me cool/dry. plus, I don't want to change clothes while training. Some people might look at you funny but cool people don't. They know what you are doing.

Had a great 14 mile run through the trails that are all around town. Ran it nice and easy with my running partner and had a great morning. I love getting all wet from the rail left over on the tall grasses and leaves of the trees I'm running through. Simply an excellent run.

Add me to the list of never using music in my training or during races. I've just never gotten into it. I really enjoy just losing myself in my thoughts while training.

And I own one tri suit currently, so it's what I'll be racing in this summer. I wouldn't want to swim in my bike shorts, as the pad would take on too much water. I certainly wouldn't want to swim in a bike jersey, but if you have a full zip, it should be pretty easy to get on after the swim. Will you then change tops in T2 or just run with the bike jersey? I think I might find running in a bike jersey to be a bit annoying.

I thought it was going to feel bulky/heave as well, but I think they must have designed it really well. It fits the head contours well and I honestly don't even notice it's on.

17.32 avg on bike this morning for 20 miles (PR), 2 minute transition then cramped at just over a mile on my brick run. Still trying to get my nutrition / hydration sorted out.

Regarding headphones. Never on the bike. Never for quality (tempo/interval) runs. Long runs, sometimes. Treadmill, oh yeah.

Be reasonable, pop one off when crossing the road. Don't crank it up even if Sweet Home Alabama comes up.

JJ-I agree. I never train with music anyway. I used to on the run but now I really prefer not to. But if you really feel it helps you it's better to restrict it to the run and even then avoid noise cancelling headphones. For safety, you need to hear what's going on around you. Please be careful out there.

I think I have some sort of an extended migraine. I used to get these sometimes but it hasn't happened in a while. I ditched my run a few minutes in last night because of it and decided not to swim this morning but I'm really hoping to get out on my bike today. I tried excedrine yesterday (didn't help) and can't take it again today (too many days in a row can cause a rebound headache and start a cycle). I'm hoping I feel a bit better later today. I was planning 16 on the bike but feeling a little dizzy. I really don't like to skip workouts.

Nicole, hope you feel better soon so you can get back out there.

Matt, hope that thumb heels up nice. A few cold beers are what the doctor ordered.

Paul, looking forward to having you back soon as well.

My race in a few weeks is a 430/14/5K. I went out this morning for a ride/run brick of race distances. It was mid morning, mid 80s, and windy. I finished in 74 minutes (47 ride/27run). I was disappointed but taking in all considerations, it wasn't horrible. I did 22 miles on the bike yesterday. Legs were a little tired.

With fresh legs, a day of rest before the race, and an early morning cool start, I will kick 74 minutes in the nuts. I rested the prior day of my race in March and I believe it benefited me.

I always rest on Sundays and dedicate it to the family. I finished my 3rd week of solid training and am excited about that.

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the weekend. Train smart, and I'll see you Monday.

Got in a 5 mile run this morning, didn't push it. Felt good to be active.

btw - my tri workout today was a wash out anyway bcuz of unsafe water conditions. So all I really missed was a 30 mile bike ride. Oh well.

While we are talking about accomplishments, I ran 25 miles this week.  That includes a 9 mile run that I did last night.  That is the largest volume these legs have seen in a year.  Stoked.

woo hoo! got in a 10k this morning! this stupid thumb isn't going to slow me down!

Dr. appointment tomorrow. I'm hoping he can give me some good news and at least a plastic splint I can take in the pool and use a kick board.

Great to hear everyone is hitting highs. It's that time of year!
