Tracy - Glad to hear you are recovering from the stress fracture and are able to run 5 days a week. Still don't know how you get on the bike for that long of a stretch. Sorry to hear about the gym ending childcare and that you will lose some students.

Will - My props to you for directing youth camp all week. I'd rather do many, many other things than be responsible for the health and safety of that many kids. As a parent, thank you! As for signing up for a IM, I'd say go for it, but I know how hard it is to juggle everything else on top of trianing, so I hope you make the best decision, whatever that may be. I think Jeff makes a great point about IM being a "calling."

Dirk - Thanks! The folks that came in 2nd and 3rd were close to 60, so they definitely schooled my butt with their sub 20:00 finishes.

Jeff - "When I finished, I saw my bloody toe which I thought was just a random leakage, skin peeling off the bottoms of my feet, and the Achilles hurting worse than ever before and it took half the joy away.
In the aftermath, I suspect my toe was broken when I entered the water.  But it doesn't hurt much unless I squeeze it or move it (under it's own muscle power).  The Achilles is the real problem."  For starters, I LOVE reading your race reports, and secondly, I cannot imagine what the people around you were thinking when they saw you and your bloody foot. Perhaps they just thought.... stay out of that crazy guy's way!

Tales from an Asphalt Junkie..... "How you know you are a Asphalt Junkie".....

So, I am getting ready for a Sprint Tri on July 4th, but am considering running in a 5k this Saturday. No biggie in my mind, right? The Sprint will not be an "A" race, just a chance to get more OWS practice in. So, this guy I met while being a vendor at a recent Century ride and "Mr. I've done 30 Triathlons" (he prefaced his advice with that info) offers unsolicited advice to me yesterday. He tells me that clearly I haven't done a triathlon before and that I need to start resting and better not run the 5k on Saturday since it will be 4 days out from the triathlon. MMhhmmm..... my reply to him.... clearly you are not at Asphalt Junkie. Still not sure if I can make it to the 5k on Saturday since it is a long drive and an early start, but I will be hammering out a bike ride come Tuesday morning.

Tracy I'm sorry to hear that you had to give up your gig for your spin classes and that you won't have all your current students joining you at the new classes. That sucks but I hope the new class works out well for you.

Dina welcome back and glad to hear you were able to get some running in while you were in Texas and for crying out loud give your husband a day off before he has to go back to work!

JoAnne glad to hear that you had a great vacation in PA and that you had a great time in Syracuse. That was the best race I have done in my oh so short triathlon career lol. I had so much fun there I'd not hesitate to go back there and do that race again. You did an awesome job finishing that race. If you get a chance I want a copy of the pic we took before the swim. The only disappointing thing was not being able to see you finish and getting a pic with you with those finisher medal.

Jen I hate people like that, I call them the know it all's. I had to laugh at your response though. You know what we all think go do that 5K if you can and go out there and kill it at your 4th of July sprint. That's what Junkies do!

Jen: that is a perfect response! We all know 4 days is plenty if time to recover from a 5k, actually 24hrs is more than enough! But I assume this guy probably does a full taper week just for a 5k! Hope you get to do both races!

Jen, great response, even if only internally responded. While I know we all pride the group on being "tough", I like to think we're also smart and not sheep. So much of what is taken as gospel in triathlon is regurgitation of something someone read by someone who read something who read something who talked to pro x/y/z in 1982.

I like to think that we try to incorporate current and experiential knowledge rather than simply accept triathlon "common knowledge". In this case, tapering for a sprint, or how a 5k will affect the individual, is dependent on so many factors it is impossible for someone to comment to you on your taper. And for the record, what pros go through and their training experiences offer very little of value for everyday age groupers with "real" lives like almost all of us (I give Jonathan a pass on that one).

I know this is a more serious answer to a crazy situation, but while we pride ourselves on being a "tough" group, we're also a smart group and always testing theories with real life experiences. We certainly aren't trying to drive anyone into danger to prove anything. We know how HTFU we all are, and don't need any other external confirmation of that!

Jeff, that race report is crazy. And I second (third?) that I love reading your race reports. One of my triathlon goals for this year is to write race reports commensurate with your example. I'd like to offer an opinion that I think you should consider getting that Achilles fixed sooner than later, with one caveat at the end.

I know you solicited medical opinions and found that no further damage is being done. However, your races are suffering from the conditions and it might make sense to just get it taken care of and get more rehab time and come back stronger than ever.

If you can accept just finishing and knowing that your performances might suffer and can accept, really accept internally, just getting the most of what your body has to give that day, and you're still confident that no further damage can be done, then have a great racing season.

You guys are awesome! The Junkies have really stepped up to the plate this year and I appreciate your donations to my MS ride. I've been absent this week getting ready for our 175 mile ride and our Mt. Rainier hike next week. A LOT going on!

Honestly, I can't believe you guys with lots of kids and mutliple jobs and houses and still training and keeping up. Amazing...I'm honestly not sure that I'll be able to do the same when I have kids. Not exactly a lack of confidence; the realist in me just says, "THERE'S NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE DAY!!"

Jonathan, you have a firm grasp on reality. Most people in your position would probably fool themselves in to thinking they will have time to do it all. You are ahead of the game. It shows that you have a commitment to being properly involved in your children's lives, both for their sake and to share the burden with your wife.

That being said, if triathlon is a high enough priority you will find a way to do it. Not necessarily 20 hour training weeks, but maybe 7-8?

Warren, thanks for the advice.

I have exactly the same thought process going on. Until Saturday's race I haven't been hobbled by this in regard to run training. If this week is a flare up that returns to status quo then I will hold on to the original plan. If I'm not able to train (the run), then what about getting on the repair and recovery wagon sooner? I decided yesterday that I would still wait until fall. There is so much great cycling, not to mention simple outdoor activity, to be had this summer. I'd rather my lifestyle take a nose dive during the winter anyway.
So if necessary I will just train the swim and bike the rest of the summer and love doing it!
That way I might still be able to make Tri Indy and race Dirk to T2!

Saturday's race, that I'm already paid up for, is going to most likely be an aquabike for me. I'll get something for my money and enjoy bumping other people in the OWS, and get on the bike and hone my race skills on the trail and collect the t-shirt and cheer for my friends and competitors.
I will be prepared to run in case I'm feeling OK. Because if necessary I can stop running for the rest of the summer, so running Saturday, even if it increases my pain won't bother me. But I'm not going to run Saturday if I feel like I do at the moment.

That sounds like a great plan Jeff. I am doing an aquabike this summer just because I enjoy it as well.

But you do understand that when you spank Dirk to T2 he'll use the excuse that he had to run afterwards!

Jen,  I had to laugh about the sage advice from such an experienced athlete.  There's one in every crowd I suppose.  I actually know a guy (and trained rarely with) who's experiences in triathlon, that I am aware of, extend only to sprints yet he offers advice for long course racing.  Now, that in itself isn't the crazy part because that's possible to give good advice based on knowledge and application of training principles.  The problem lies when he tells me how easy it will be for him to KQ when he's 50 years old.  He believes that he will be fast enough to place in the appropriate places to earn a spot. ..........I can pretty much beat him at any race right now other than a 5k foot race, and even the 5k would be a very, very tight finish.  Triathlon I would definitely beat him at any distance because I can thoroughly thrash him on the bike.  Now I kind of laugh to myself when he gives me advice and tells me how he'll get to Kona in a couple of years.

BTW, DO BOTH RACES!!........Then find this guy somewhere else and report back to him how you kicked the trash out of everyone at both races one week apart.

Dina,  it's good to have you back with the rest of the world.  It sounds like you had at least some time for yourself while on vacation.  Those alone runs in unfamiliar or new-ish routes can be pretty nice sometimes just to recapture our vibrancy for our sport.  It was kind of like that for the hilly ride I took in Ohio a month ago.

Joanne,  Those are amazing pictures from your PA trip.  I would imagine your disconnect from the civilized world felt pretty good too.  Many times when we plan a trip camping for a weekend or a longer time period I try to get outside of my employers footprint.  I can mentally disconnect more easily and not think about storms response, etc.  I have always loved watching storms with large amounts of lightning but as a supervisor I have learned that many times it only means more work and I have lost that passion to watch them.  Outside our service territory I can reclaim the joy of watching storms for a while.

Jonathan,  You know I'm going to agree with Jeff about your response to training with a family and I know how much of an impact your father has made on your life.  Keeping things in perspective as you are is keeping priorities in line with where you need to be as a person and a father.  Beginning that journey now, even before kids, will reap tremendous benefits as you begin a new family.  A strong commitment now will mean a greater impact later.

Jeff and Warren,  Umm?  Heck yeah I'll be using the excuse that I had to run after T2!!  I would be a fool not to!  Especially if I get the trashed kicked out of me.  In all reality I would hate to have to race without both of us being 100%.

Here's a link to some really good advice for all of us and a point that I believe Jeff is living out this weekend.  Good on Jeff for doing for being the example we all should follow.

Tony,  I have yet to read your RR from Syracuse.  I should get to that later this morning.

_________

Brenda and I will be racing against each other tomorrow morning....again.  This will be the second race this season and both Lis and I are looking forward to seeing her. tonight at packet pick up.

Before we head west I was planning a swim at the long course pool but that plan was foiled.  Lis and I have been sitting all morning discussing some vacation (long weekend plans) upcoming.  Those plans will not afford me the luxury of racing Rev3 Cedar Point again this season.  I am very disappointed I will not be back over there in September because I wanted to see what I could do with one year of experience at the 70.3 distance and a little training could do for me there...again.

Lis finally told me recently that she wants to do something for her for a change (I don't mean this in a negative way) and I will certainly oblige her.  Her willingness to chase me around for these years of racing has been an incredible gift to me and I cannot even consider telling her how badly I would like to race Rev3 again.  We are planning to go to Destin Fl. again over the Labor day weekend and extending it for a day or two and the added expense of a major race won't work well.  At least the way we did it last year with the camping, meals, Cedar Point entry tickets and additional gas to drive that far towing our camper.

We have begun discussion of me finding a closer, long-ish course race for the late season that will be much cheaper in overall expenditures, but those negotiations are in the very beginning stages.

Now I just have to figure out how to get the Rev3 race off my race calendar.

Warren and Dirk....

It's definitely not a 'race' between Dirk and I if I'm stopping in T2....I will say exactly what you did, Dirk: It's definitely an excuse.
But on the other hand...if I can't beat you to T2 when I'm not even saving something for the run, then you definitely have the moral victory.

On another note: A local runner/triathlete that I know was hit by a car last night. She will be fine, but she's still in the ER with broken ribs and collapsed lung. Here's the take-away for you all...this time of year the sun sets much more closely to due West. So it's often blindingly direct in the eyes of drivers. If you are riding around sunset keep in mind the direction of the sun and how it might affect the drivers approaching you from a variety of angles.

Dirk and Brenda good luck this weekend. I hope you guys have a safe and great race we know that you'll represent the Junkies well this weekend.

Jonathan good luck and have a safe and great ride this weekend. It's great to see you doing the ride for MS, I think it's an awesome thing to do.

Any other Junkies racing this weekend good luck and go get'em!

I'll be doing my second and last race in prep for IMWI this weekend. It is a local Oly which I did last year. I'm really doing this one for fun. I have a bunch of friends racing at this one so it should be a blast. I'm not sure what I am going to do though. I was thinking maybe I should just take it easy and have fun with this one. On the other hand that's really not my style and I'm really leaning towards just going all out and seeing what I can do. I'm still not sure how I am going to perform coming off the HIM last weekend. If I feel good Sunday morning I'm just gonna go for it, swim hard, bike hard and pray I can survive the run.

Hey all, checking in from somewhere in the middle of the state of New York! After 10hrs of driving Sara finally took over and I get a break!

Looks their are several of you racing, good luck,

dirk, smart choice on rev3! It is always better to keep the home front happy, giving up 1 race keeps everyone happy and does not affect future races, where as fighting for one race could lead to difficulties getting approval for other races! With the Monday night pool team winnig the tourney it puts me in the same predicament! I can't afford all the races I had planned and still go to nationals and since pool is Sara's thing I need to support her as much as she puts up with my addiction 365 days out of the year!

on the commitment to ironman, 1st response would of been to suck it up and go for it, but I know the time commitment is crazy! Especially if you want to do well! I am struggling to meet the training times just for my HIM so I can imagine a full would be daunting! My goal is do to a full in 2015 but if I can't get my training time up tha is not going to happen, and since I refuse to miss the kids sports I may put it off for a couple more years!

my upcoming week of vacation looks to be promising for extra training, Sara has given me freedom to do what I want up until about 10am! So I think I will get up early and get as much biking as possible and through in a couple of runs!

I just got to spend a little time with Dirk and Lisa!   They make me laugh.  I almost didn't recognize Dirk because he looked a bit like Grizzly Adams.  He promised to shave his face for the race as it'll drop some seconds off his time.   His legs were nice and smooth, though, so I guess he prioritized.   Wink    It's good to be with friends.

I have this little sprint race tomorrow then I'm off the racing scene for a while.   We have family vacation week then a week off which will be laundry and more laundry then repack for a "hubby and me" vacation week while the kids are at camp.  The month of July is going to fly by!     I'll stay as connected as I can with you all because you bring me Junkie Joy!

May you each find your happy place this weekend, whether you're racing, training or taking time off.

Matt have a great vacation and enjoy the time off and the extra training time. You got that right on the IM training. If there is one thing I underestimated it was how difficult it is to find balance. I don't know how some people do it every year.

Jeff good luck with your race tomorrow. I hope you are feeling better and are able to do to the run portion of the race.

You all may kick me out of the Junkies, I'm afraid I have really lost the motivation to race this summer. I've been fighting this feeling all spring if you remember, well I was invited to come race for free today at a small local tri and I turned it down.  If I can't get motivated to race for free then what will it take?!
