Hardly, I was running back and forth between the bed and the bathroom. And I had to go outside to fish an umbrella out of the pool! And I took the trash out after I cleaned the bathroom for the 3rd time. Don't want hubbie getting sick! Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. You have a POOL?! She has a pool and a pond. Pond will be good for you. I do have a pool. A very small pool. Just big enough to float in and drink adult beverages. (14 X 28) I don't have a pond. Where did that come from? The umbrella was warm and needed to cool off, however, it was sitting on top of the vacuum system, which I love as much as I love my hubbie because it means I can be lazy and not vacuum the pool myself, so I had to rescue the sucker. And the good news is that I weighed in 3 lbs lighter this morning than I did on Sunday morning. Wonder how long that will last? |

After being sick like this I have found that my stomach has done better with the carbs at first. I've been adding more protein as I go along. I think the proteins required too much processing and was sort of overload for it to handle. By the weekend you should be eating back to normal. |

What types of foods do you think it's better to eat- more complex carbs or more protein? As Sue was nice enough to drop in and point out, I've actually dealt with this very problem before. Simple sugars are most easily absorbed, plus will make you feel better. When I had my stomach issues at St Anthony's, I was drinking a lot of Ginger Ale and Gatorade. The Gatorade gave simple sugars plus electrolytes, which are crucial. When I was able to tolerate it, I added a Nuun tablet to the Gatorade to increase the electrolyte content.

Hey... speaking on Nuun tablets. How well do they work compared to others? |

Champion 5615 | Subject: RE: CubeFarmGopher's Group - Closed I like the Nuun tablets b/c they dissolve in fluid (much like an alka seltzer) completely. Therefore, for me, it is easier to take than salt pills. I don't believe there is much difference in the effectiveness of the salt-delivery systems (Nuun, Lava Salts, e-caps, etc), if you know how much electrolytes you need and how often. Based on the fact that I'm a very salty sweater, I make sure that I take in a lot of electrolytes while exercising. Check out my Album from Marine Corps Marathon to see what I mean by heavy salt sweater. Most often I use eFuel and eGel from Crank Sports b/c they are heavy in electrolytes. Plus, by taking in concentrated electrolytes as part of my nutrition, I don't have to worry about forcing myself to drink gatorade on the course. If I'm feeling bloated, I can just drink as much water as I want without worrying about it. |

How do I figure this out? I've done it by trial and error, but here is one commonly accepted way of determining. Identify how much you sweat by doing a workout at race intensity for 1 full hour. Prior to the workout, weigh yourself naked. Drink a measured amount of fluid during the workout. After your workout, weigh yourself naked again. Use the following formula to determine your sweat rate. Total fluid lost = Body weight change in grams (lbs/.0022) + Consumed fluid in milliliters (oz*30) Divide total fluid loss by how many hours you worked out to determine your loss rate in liters per hour. Then you know how much you need to drink to keep yourself hydrated. To determine your electrolyte requirements, multiply your loss rate times 0.5 to 0.7 grams/liter depending on how salty your sweat usually is.

Regular 73 Berkeley Heights | Subject: RE: CubeFarmGopher's Group - Closed I love the science of performance and this is all new to me. I'm the type that will run 3 miles or do the elyptical for an hour and not take fluids until I'm done. (I know, not wise). I sweat an obscene amount and like you very salty. OF course I'm doing much less but do you typically hydrate with water or electrolyte replacement during your workouts? Now, I have just one question...in 27 parts (guess the movie). I'm having a tough time putting my whole swim together. Some laps are dead on while others I struggle. Seems like when I have my breathing perfect and my hip rotation down, things are fine. But if I take in water, get disrupted, mis-stroke etc, it's hard to get everything back. I'm trying to focus on good hip rotation, expelling all the air from my lungs (which is probably 80% thru my mouth and the last 10% out my nose just before my mouth breaches the surface), maintaining my kick, and not taking full arm swings but driving my hand thru the water at my ear/goggle line and staying long. I would compare it to over thinking a golf swing (if any of you golf - arm straight, take back slow, drop hands into slot, head down, etc). So does anyone else have this issue? Or is it just me needing to spend more time in the drink? I presently work out at a Y, that is close to home but is the only Y that doesn't have a masters swim class. Suggestions? |

Kind of reminds me of the way I used to be...but not anymore!! |

No, your not alone. by the time you remember everything you are suppose to do with your swim stroke you sinking to the bottom of the pool. At least with my golf stroke, if I forget something and slice it into the woods I can get back into the cart and drink a beer while I go look for the ball. hmm... why don't I go golfing more? |

Just wait until you're in that swim start getting kicked and beaten. You'll quickly learn to avoid distraction. Just remember, train like you race: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3S0wu4Zbfk
Seriously, though, with time you'll gain the muscle memory and everything will become 2nd nature. Just practice, practice, practice. (so says the guy who has only swum 20' in the last month. ) Edited by CubeFarmGopher 2007-06-06 10:14 AM |

Regular 73 Berkeley Heights | Subject: RE: CubeFarmGopher's Group - Closed I hear you. During last sept. sprint, I stayed outside and back of the pack at the start. The whole swim was so terrible that it didn't even bother me that people from 2 groups had passed me. The swim is where I want to make the biggest improvement but don't want to overdo it until I gain more strength in the shoulder. |

Master 2571 Tiger's Den | Subject: RE: CubeFarmGopher's Group - Closed Back to the electrolyte thing. Why is it that I can drink Gatorade all day on the bike but when I run, the gatorade bloats me. But I can drink water with no problems. I'm guessing it's the sugar. But I can do clif shot bloks and water and I'm fine. Weird. I'm also the type to not hydrate enough. I took a cup of water and one gel during mile 4 of my half mary in Feb and that was it because it caused me to cramp. Ran the whole thing without anything else. |
