Many people in our small community of Jasper County, Iowa thought that Maytag was "too big too fail." They also thought they (the union) could always hold out for higher wages, benefits, etc.

Well...there are now dozens of empty Maytag manfufacturing facilities sitting empty in Newton, IA, and thousands of former workers without jobs, and tremendous decreases in local tax revenues, etc. to prove them wrong.

And Whirlpool is smiling all the way to the bank.

The greed on both sides lead to their demise and everyone lost.

Just my .02 cents.

I am an intern at a supplier for Boeing currently. And we are union. And many of the experiences I have had are very much negatives, with regards to unions.

My experiences to date:

  1. I have been yelled at for helping an operator assemble a non-production part (Government research that will never be put into an aircraft). Mind you, not actually laying down the carbon fiber or cutting something, just handing an operator a silicone tool.
  2. Our labor costs are higher, and we have lost bids for parts on that alone.
  3. The union protects operators who are terrible workers. We have some very old operators (70+) who are do almost no work, yet are paid the highest because they have the most seniority. Also, we have a couple that have sued the company 5+ times, manage to do next no work, and are still paid employees because the union fought for them. I will admit that most of the operators are great workers, but some have told me they don't care too much for unions. One operator I worked with told me "some people around here need to be fired for their own good".
