The gifted program in our district is pretty mellow... we have 8 classes of each grade (8 1st grade, 8 2nd grade etc...) and 1 of the first grade class is designated at the GT program. Some kids have tested into the program and some were just placed in it to fill the class (like my daughter this year). The class covers exactly the same stuff as the other 7 classes just a bit faster and with more details. they also do a individual project - this year they made there own cereal, box, logo advertising etc.... haven't seen the finished product as all the work was done at school with no help from mom and dad. They also have less homework then the other classes as they do more in class and cover more then the other classes during the school day. As far as I know, none of the kids know they are in the GT class nor do they know they tested into the program.... I just told alyssa it was to see how she was doing and if she needed help in any area... she was satisfied with that answer and she enjoyed taking the exam

Like i said before, I just want her in the GT program to protect her from being placed in the ELS classes and then going thru what her little friend is going thru this year. It's crazy how/why people are placed in the ESL classes here but then again this is Texas... they do crazy stuff here.

I was in AIM (accent on individual motivation) from 4th -6th grade and I loved it. Even though it was only a few years, it made a really big impression on me, well, forever. I learned things about thinking and learning that I have used ever since. I still remember my teacher from that class. I was kind of a social boob anyway, so it was great to be in class with other geeks and feel like I fit in.

IN jr. high & high school, the program continued, but it was extra classes in ADDITION to the regular stuff. I was no fool...no more AIM for me. I did skip a year of math class and did well academically, but socially i was still an outcast...now I was a girl geek with kids who were a year older than me.

I didn't feel like I really had a gropu of friends I could identify with until I was captain of our high school's first girls soccer team. I was finally a jock, and a smartie, and that was cool with the soccer chicks. I even got nomiated for homecoming queen!

Not quite sure how to deal with this...

He's only in 1st grade! His first semester's report card had all E's in everything except handwriting, where was 'S' (he's left handed, writes and eats with that hand but throws right).

Got a note from the school asking for permission to test him for whether he's "Intellectually" or "Academically" Gifted. His mother and I are going to send the slip in - I mean, we're super pleased - and I think its cool that he says stuff like "I know what Infinity is - its numbers forever !" (I have NO idea where he learned that concept, but he totally understands it, when I asked him to explain it). Still, I'm not quite sure what to expect... anyone else had experience with this?

Of course he gifted......he was born on January 17thCool. (Actually, we got the same grades in grade school, but I always got S or N in handwriting)
