Hello All,
This chat thread is way ... way ... to quiet. How is everyone doing after the first 3 days??

You're just used to the overly active chatty Cathy's in the TNT thread! I think THIS thread is more the norm for BT!

I guess I will have to get my "chatty" fix with you and Dee on the other thread ...

It is fairly quiet in here. Hope everyone is doing OK.

I have a problem trying to get all my workouts in as well per my training plan. I'm doing the 12 week Sprint HR plan which is 3x week. Today I'm scheduled to swim 2200y in 40 minutes and then run 45 minutes. I don't even understand the scheduled time for the swim since that would be at a 1.5 minutes per 100 yard pace without any of the rest times factored in. That isn't going to happen. Ate a 1/2 peanut butter and honey sandwich on whole wheat bread when I got home which tasted great. Now I'm off to see what I can get done.

**********************

You are right; that sounds more like an elite level speed. Also, doing heavy bricks like that I hope that you took in some more calories than just the sandwich. If you have restricted your intake you may force your body into lowering your metabolism eventhough you are working more. That will force you to work harder for each pound lost. I made that mistake when I first started and was loosing very slowly. When I increased my calorie intake by eating small abounts every 3 or so hours I found that I lost weight at a quicker rate (about 2lbs per week instead of .5 per week)

I got in a 1800m swim and a 3.3 mile run tonight. I do have trouble trying to balance my food intake and my calories burned. I looked at SparkPeople and might try using that. Last summer I used a website similar to that (startmakingchoices.com which is sponsored by Conagra) and lost 25 lbs. They've since changed the site and I don't think it's as user friendly now. I'm currently tracking my nutrition on a spreadsheet, but need to factor in my workouts. I have hypothyroidism, so my metabolism is difficult to regulate anyways. Last summer I was eating a 1500 calorie diet (300 for breakfast, 300 for lunch, 600 for dinner, and 3 100 calorie snacks). I'm currently trying to get in 1750 calories. Today I managed to get in 1777. I know I burned 400 calories on my run (per my HRM) and probably about the same amount on my swim today. I don't have time to eat more than a snack before my workout (I can't eat more than that anyway and work out) and then I'm not hunger when I'm done. I'll see how I do on around 1750 for now.

Heh Sharkie

Don't beat yourself up about hard days - move on and try to plan.  Tell yourself you can enjoy without guilt one slice of that birthday cake (oh and go and run it off!)

 To everyone else

Hope all is going well. I had another good day yesterday.  It makes me want to jump on the scales and see I have lost pounds and pounds but my sensible head knows a need more than a couple of days - guess it shows that I am feeling better about myself though.

Yeah it's okay sharkie, I had a good couple days, but ended up with about 3000 calories yesterday And I think I'm going to try zig zagging so that my metabolism isn't fixed on 1500 calories. Does anyone know a good site for more info on zig zagging? I checked out a few, but would like to do more reading.

Hey I'm hypothyroid too! Hoshimoto's...it does make it hard to figure out your metabolism but not impossible! 1700 calories is a good place to start to try to figure out what your best net is for losing weight. My problem is I tend to overeat on my rest days.

Yeah, Sharkie don't beat yourself up about it. Just move on - same thing when you miss a workout. I used to try to "make up" my missed workouts and ended up getting injured. If you miss a day or have a bad day just forget it and try to do better the next day.

I had a good day yesterday - Even though I ate a lot of calories early in the day I was really good the rest of the day. I didn't eat at all after 7pm which was actually close to torture but I did it!

Today is a rest day for me and I am right at 1100 calories so I feel pretty good about today too so far. But I'm pretty sure my husband is in the kitchen cooking something I can't eat as we speak. BAH!

I've been keeping my calories between 1700 and 1800 so far. I know yesterday I probably burned at least 900 so I'll have to see how that works. I think normally it's closer to 400. But so far so good. I'm going out of town this weekend, so my official wait for the week will have to be Saturday AM. Hopefully I'll remember to weigh before my 7am flight (I think that would be better than Tuesday AM when I get home). When I have some extra down time, I'll look more closely at the sparkspeople website.

Bippers, I have Hashimoto's as well. It took years to finally diagnose and workups from several doctors, despite the fact I had a goiter and ALL of the classic symptoms. Three months after starting treatment, I got pregnant (10 years after my husband's vasectomy). Apparently, the hypothyroidism was keeping me from getting pregnant all of those years. What a surprise!

Sudie, just remember portion control, and you can have a bit of everything for your husband's birthday.

Jackie, how did your race go over the weekend? Hopefully, you were happy with it. I have a race coming up on June 22nd.

jrcody, are you stationed over in Kuwait? The heat must make it difficult to train. We've been in the mid 90s, setting record highs.

Everyone, keep up the good work!! We can all do this together!!

Yeah, I don't have a husband or a boyfriend for that matter but you're right portion control is important and I'll try to work on it And 900 calories, nice job!

Ok, so today's goal was to ride the IronGirl bike route.

But we had a huge storm last night so lights are out and some schools are closed due to power outages. And there is water and debris everywhere!.

So I think I might go to the gym instead and ride and do some strength training. Or maybe I'll just get on the trainer at home and strength train at home. We'll see how it goes. But the last thing I need to do is run into some big tree limb and fly off my bike.

Yeah, it took me awhile to get Hashimoto's diagnosed too. But I've been on synthetic thyroid hormones for about 8 years now. And I had trouble getting pregnant too - Who knew a sluggish thyroid would make that a problem!

But I finally got pregnant about 5 years ago...Happiest day of my life! I would say the delivery was the happiest day of my life but I really didn't enjoy that all that much

Sudie, sorry I really meant that comment about portion control for Sharkie, since she has her husband's birthday today. But obviously it applies to us all! Have you found much more information on the zig-zag diet?

Bippers, the only difference is you were trying to get pregnant. I was done with all my kids and, surprise, 10 years later. My kids are 9, 19, 21, and almost 28!! We'd be empty nesters now! But he truly was a blessing! Where would we be without them?

I definitely would be up for a strength training challenge. Could definitely do some core work. I know that strength training is one of my weaknesses (but I've been working on it this week).

How about this for a strength challenge?
I tend to focus on core and upper body since our legs get such a workout on the bike/run...so let me know if this doesn't work for anyone. All 6 exercises once a week for a total of 4 times during the challenge. You can certainly do more if you want and you can decide what weight to use for the upper body exercises.

Team 1 June Strength Challenge:
#1: push ups (50) (0/4)
#2: planks (2:00) & superman (50) (0/4)
#3: crunches (100)& side crunches (50 each side) (0/4)
#4: alternating dumbbell bicep curls (30 each arm) (0/4)
#5: dumbbell lateral raises (30 each arm) (0/4)
#6: tricep dips (30) (0/4)

Lufferly, it's cool, and seriously, sometimes I do need to work on portion control (sugar is my weakness). And my mom had 10 kids in 15 years, and then 5 years later my mom got a surprise, but life wouldn't be as fun without him! As far as zig zagging goes I think it's effective, so I'm going to give it a try and see how it works, wish me luck.

Bippers, I like it, team LIFT. And as far as strength training goes, I'm in. Although, for me I'd just as soon spend an hour at the gym twice a week and work on whatever muscles I feel need toned up vs. the same six workouts (I get bored easily and like to switch it up every now and then) So, maybe for the strength training challenge everyone could try to make some sort of commitment to train a bit, anywho, I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Team LIFT sounds great. Team LIFT IS Team 1 (or is that #1 Team).

The strength challenge sounds great. However, anyone wants to do it. I'll probably have to start mine next week since I'm going out of town early tomorrow AM thru Monday early evening. My 19 year old daughter is a professional actor (theatre) and is currently in Iowa doing summer stock, so I'm going to see her show (Thoroughly Modern Millie, she's Millie), actually I'll get to see it twice : ) . The hotel pool is small but a little larger than most, and there is a workout room with a bike and treadmill, so hopefully I can try to get a workout in, and the one of the best hot tubs I've ever seen. There is also a REALLY nice public pool but it but I'm sure the water is still really cold. Or I can go run along the Mississippi River on the Great River Hike and Bike Trail. I wish I had a bike available to ride the 62 mile trail, but that will have to wait until another visit.

Ok, Team LIFT....where is everybody?

So for the Strength challenge how about we challenge everyone to do 45 minutes of strength training per week. Each to his/her own on what to spend the time on and you can use the exercises I put in there if you can't think of anything else.

Also, if you go to SparkPeople.com you can go to their fitness section and ask it to randomly generate strength workouts for you or you can build your own there. Its a nice tool.

So who's in for 45 minutes of strength a week?

Nice name I like it.

I've been doing well.  I did weigh myself this morning and now have the motivation to be good for a few days til official weigh day.

My race last weekend was just bike part of a relay and was fun.  This Sunday is my first tri this year - Keuka Olympic distance eek.  At the start of the week the lake temp was 53!  Thank goodness we are having a mini heat wave and it is now 63 (and hopefully warmer by Sun

My first thoughts on strength challenge was euughhhyuk!  Strength is alway first to go when I try and up my bike, run, swim hours...but actually the challenge has come at the right time because I know  I need to do regular strength training (for my bones - i'm a middle aged oldie now - although I don't feel like one) 45 mins per week sounds reasonable - I'll probably do mine in 2 sessions.

Posts on here, sparse as they seem to be are positive so hope all is going well. If not, come and post anyway and we will help motivate you.
