Just checking in with everyone.  Somehow, I have fallen off the wagon and trying to get back on track.  Workingout is going ok, but I managed to put some pounds after the 28th.  The scales say 5.  I say that cannot be right.  I wasn't as careful as I usually am, but no way was I so careless that I managed to put on 5 pounds in 1 week!  I am not going to let this get me down.  So on I plow.  Yesterday, had a good workout and today did a small brick with a 30  minute brick and one mile run/one mile walk.

I find that my weight changes dramatically day to day (3 to 4 pounds) and I attribute that to water and diet.  I have read that a large carbo heavy meal requires a lot of water to digest and therefore your weight reflects that.  I have also read that after hard / long workouts your body has a tendency to carry extra water.

It doesn't help when your brother comes to visit and makes a from-scratch cheesecake.

I too am suffering from a letdown - but it's pretty darn mild compared to past winters.  With the holidays and their accompanying distractions over it's now time for me to get back on track.  Feel free to apply peer pressure as needed.

I think we all need to get back at it.  One of my biggest weekly challenges that I still have not been able to overcome is the Monday morning swim.  I can never drag my butt out of bed to go to the pool.  I need to quit making excuses and just get it done.  It's the New year and it's definitely time to start working towards your goals for the year.

Right on...let's be the group that gets the job done!  I'm going to get to the Y which is 1/2 hour away by 6AM for a workout, gosh darn it!  If I don't please chastise me fully on my training log ;P

Yep, kicked that letdown in its butt. Longest trainer ride of the year.  Okay, so it was only an hour, but come on - it's the trainer!

Hitting the gym tonight (one of my last nights at my current gym).  Going to a class actually, called Body Attack.  The name is fitting.  Taking my new heart rate monitor to see how high my hr actually climbs and how many calories burned.  Still on the hunt for a new gym with pool.

An hour on the trainer is a long....time.

Mitch, do you have any recommendations to find my LT using a simple polar hr monitor?  I want to try it on my trainer.

Here are my race goals for 2009.  I am still looking for bike events.

3/14 Chambersburg Half Marathon

4/19 Mountain Maryland Half Marathon

4/25 Hagerstown Duathlon #1

5/3 Frederick Half Marathon

Friel's book the Triathlon Training Bible has a great description and the current thread on the triathlon forum board dealing with HR has a link.  However, by memory here is how I would describe it:

Warm up on your bike/trainer for 15 minutes.  If not on a trainer ensure you are riding on flat roads.  After warm-up begin cycling at a pace you can maintain for 30 minutes.  This should be as uncomfortable  as you can manage for 30 minutes.  10 minutes into the 30 minute period hit the lap button on your watch.  If no lap button, begin a workout to coincide with that time.  Your average HR over the last 20 minutes is should be a very close representation of your LT.  Cool down appropriately.

A similar test can be done for running where you run at the maximum pace you can maintain over 30 minutes (with the same warm up and cooldown).  The LT is again computed as average HR over the last 20 minutes of the 30 minute period.

I realize I may have been confusing so please ask any questions, etc.

I have only done the cycling LT test once and it was hard.  I have approximated my LT based on my average HR over the half-marathon I did on Oct 19th of last year.  I will eventually get around to doing the LT test for running this year as well.

A few of you are already doing this but I encourage everyone to start visiting each others training blogs and leaving "inspire me" for each other.  Its nice to open up your training log and find a nice atta boy (or girl) or some good encouragement.  Thank you to those that ave left them for me.

Well I had a mixed training day today. On the plus side I had my first session with the Masters swim class. Wow what a difference that makes. The other day I struggled to get thru 1500M by myself, tonight I was able to do 3000m no sweat, just following the coaches instructions. not to mention that the pool water was 10,000 time better than the water at the gym. The water there tastes as salty as an ocean, I swear they haven't cleaned it in like 5 months or something. It's gross.

But on the down side, I didn't get up eary enough in order to do my planned strength training this morning. I told myself I would do it after my swim but sure enough when I was done I just skipped it. I need to plan a little bit better.

OK good night all.

Thanks for the props....brought a smile to my face this morning.  Had a good dreadmill run this morning followed by a strength workout and then using my snow thrower to clear my driveway.  Boy am I tired of winter already.

We "might" get 1 to 3 inches of snow this weekend and everyone thinks it is a big deal.

I am going to attempt a LT test on my bike trainer this weekend.  Mitch, I will do as you suggested and warmup, ride the first 10 min., then start tracking the HR for the nex 20. My HR monitor is not very good and I will probably write the actual HR down on paper while I am riding every few minutes and compute the average when I am done.  It should be interesting and hopefully I won't fall off Smilewhen I write down the HR.

OK guys.  Here's one for ya.  My darn dog ATE my brand spankin new Polar F4 Heart Rate monitor that I got for Christmas.  I am just sick and want to Kill her at the moment.  It's not like I had it on the floor.  She literally got it off of my dresser.  It's salvageable I think - at least the actual face of the watch is not harmed but the wrist bands are all but gone.  Do any of you know if the wrist bands of a Polar can be replaced?  I have contacted the website, but it can take up to two days to hear from them.

That stinks Christy - don't know about the bands though.  Glad to hear the actual monitor unit is still intact.

Gotta love the pups - we have a 6 month old Aussie that is a terrific dog . . . . but still enjoys chewing anything left out within reach.  Sure has taught the boys to keep their room clean (or door closed).

Ensure that the 1st 10 minutes of the 30 is not a continuation of the warm-up...it should be at a consistent effort over 30 minutes.  It should not be fun and you should be completely wasted/spent at the end of the test.  Good luck!
