I didn't have time to hop on the bike this morning so it probably won't be until Sunday or Monday.

At my first tri I biked 11 miles in 37:26.  Pace was 3:24 a mile.  Six miles would be 20:25.  This was on a borrowed road bike (too small) and running shoes.  Since them I have gotten my own road bike, road shoes and aerobars.  I know it is the rider and not the bike but I think those things will help get me to the 18-19mph pace.

Lauren, I definitely agree with Allen, since the biking is the one portion where your equipment will greatly affect how fast you can go.

With the swimming, the long term solution will definitely be to get someone to look at your strokes. However, in the short term, I think the wetsuit might come in handy to shave off some minutes. Not sure if you are doing a race that allows wetsuit, but if you are, you should definitely race in a wetsuit. I rented a wetsuit for my tri last weekend. wetsuitrental.com
I really needed the wetsuit since the water was 62F. I grew up on the Equator, so as you can imagine, that water was not really a whole lot of fun for me.

Another must have is the elastic laces for your shoes. No more tying shoe laces, just slip on the shoes and go! This not only helps save time in transition, but also saves you time (and frustration) on every workout. I am probably not the best at tying shoe laces because prior to using these, I often had to stoop down to tie my shoe laces at least twice during a run!

Weekend is looking warm!Have a great one y'all!

Thanks for the feedback.  I had been leaning towards going for a road bike, you two have basically nudged me off the fence onto the road bike side.  I'm cruisin' Craigslist now 'till I find a good one (no budget for a nice one, but I figure this can turn into my commuting bike once I do get a really nice bike).

Unfortunately there are no wetsuits allowed (the swim is in a heated pool, 81').  I do plan on a trisuit though, does that help?  I guess I would have assumed that a wetsuit would slow me down more than speed me up, but I never was great at physics.

Really good idea on the elastic laces, I currently just have knobby ones so they don't come untied quite as bad.  I'm guessing I can get elastic laces at my local running shop, is that where to go?

GrilloOriginal -   I'm cruisin' Craigslist now 'till I find a good one

Last fall I did my first two tris on a 20+ year old mountain bike.  In November I cruised Craigslist for a road bike and ended up finding a used bike with clip on aero bars and a computer.  The guy had close to $2000 in to the bike and he sold it to me for $400.  There are definitely deals out there.

Well, if you are in a pool, then you definitely don't need a wetsuit. The tri I did this past weekend was in 62F lake water. I had on a full wetsuit and I was still cold. Let me tell you, swimming in cold water is really something else. Wetsuit will definitely help you to go faster, because the wetsuit helps you to float and make you more streamlined. Well, maybe for your next race.

For the elastic laces, yeah, I would just go to a running store or any sports store that sells shoes. Just ask for laces that don't require tying!

I just went for yoga class yesterday, it really kicked my butt. Well, now I can enjoy the weekend!

Here's the rest of my homework (sorta).  I had planned on running the 5k yesterday, but yesterday ended up having to be swapped with today.   The last time I ran a 5k was about 2 weeks ago and I doubt my time would be much different today.

Yeah that swim time is really fast.  Did you swim in college or something? You are only about 10 seconds of Michael Phelps 100m freestyle time.

Ran a 5k race yesterday and set a new PR.  I think it was 23:45.  I won't know for sure until results are posted but I am pretty happy with the time (first time into 7:xx miles).  I am in St. Louis this weekend so I don't have access to a bike but plan on doing a bike/run brick as soon as I get back.

Question, how often do you replace your running shoes?  I have been using Kayano 13's for a little over a year and probably have 250-300 miles on them.  I have been feeling a little discomfort on right shin, not bad or anything and does not bother me when running.  I am thinking new shoes may be the answer.

Also do you know of any discounts or ways to get deals?  I am looking for Asics Kayano either 13,14 or 15's.  I wear a size 12.5.  The lowest price I have found so far was for some 14's for $89.  Thanks.

I bought new shoes today for the same reason, I've been running in my current shoes for over a year and my shins started to hurt. I went to Big 5 which seems to be where the previous season's un-sold sports merchandise goes. I got a pair of $90 Saucony shoes for $20. You can't buy from them online and the selection wasn't awesome, but definitely worth a look if you need a good deal! They had Asics, Nike etc.

Well done on the running PB - great time. My immediate goal is to get under 25min - I used to do this years ago when I was only running shorter distances. All the long slow steady stuff for the marathon and half marathons has slowed me up somewhat.
Re the swimming - I have only been swimming for a bit less than a year. I had never learned to swim and when my 11 year old daughter did a kids triathlon I decided it was time to learn. It took me a while(didn't like putting my face in the water) but I just hung in there. I am not swim fit right now but am looking forward to seeing some improvements with the tri club swimming. I have been stuck at that speed for ages now!!

Great job everybody! And props to you karl on that new time!
For the shoe question: I replace them every 400-500 miles. But if your feet start to hurt, then I wouldn't hesitate to buy new ones. You can take a look at EastBay.com, they always have good deals on shoes. And in regards to the elastic shoelaces, I would highly recommend them. I used some for the first time in my last triathlon last sunday and it helped tremendously. I use yankz, which can be found at yankz.com, definitely worth looking at. I hope everyone had a good weekend and is ready to work out tomorrow!

Hey folks,

After I finished my ride yesterday I showered up and went to this running store a friend recommended to me, Fit 2 Run.  They have a few locations here in Florida and the place is simply amazing.  When I got there the salesperson who helped me had me stand on this special sensor that measures where the pressure and weight falls on your feet.  They guy looks at my scan and asks if I ever broke my left foot.   I tell him I did, over 25 years ago and they guy shows me a spot on the scan where my foot has compensated.  Really amazing.  Then they put you in a neutral shoe and have you run on a treadmill while they film you, and then analyze the video to check your footfall and suggest shoes.  Long story short, we tried a combination of 4 shoes and 2 orthotics and found the right combo, and saved me 6 ounces of weight compared to my old shoes!  They have a 30 day guarantee so if the shoes give you trouble you can swap them for a different shoe,  Plus, the guy who manages the place is a multi IM finisher and tri coach who gave me a few drills and suggestions for working on changing from a heel striker to a forefoot striker.  Really one of the best retail experiences I've ever had for any product.

Did just a mile of drills in the shoes today.  Taking my running back to square one.   Have fun training you guys!

Here's a question for you all:  I'm going to look at a new bike tonight and it's a Trek 750 and from what I found (model number plus color) it's a multitrack or hybrid bike.  It's the right size and the right price, will this be enough better than my MTB to get me through my first few triathlons or should I hold out for a real road bike?

I think the difference between a MTN bike and hybrid is way smaller than a hybrid & road bike.  A road bike is gonna have much different geometry and ultimately will allow you to go faster longer and more comfortably.  In other words, I think you'll have more room to grow in to cycling if you go with a roadie.  I just started on a road bike last year and I can't believe the difference compared to my old mtn bike.

The hybrid may be a little better then your mt. bike but not by much.  You might be better off putting some skinny tires on your mountain bike and saving up for a road bike.  A road bike is going to be much faster then the hybrid or mt. bike.

If anyone is looking for bikes or tri stuff I found a easy way to search all of craigslist if you want, http://www.crazedlist.org/.  Just select the region or the cities that you want to search.   If you want to search multiple key keywords you can use brackets and the line separator.  Ex. (tri|triathlon|60cm|road) would search for tri, triathlon, 60cm and road.  Be sure to look in For Sale > Bike.

Lauren, I am not sure what size bike you are looking for or how much you want to spend but here are the listings in Mountain Central.
http://www.crazedlist.org/index.cgi?areas=13,210,287,288,315,326,328,336,338,475,52,292,402,403,404,56,197&catAbbreviation=bik&query=(tri|road|triathlon|road|54|54cm|56|56cm|52|52cm)&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max&thiscat=8&submit=Search

I was able to find a really good deal on a 2005 Fuji Robouix for $595 that included clipless pedals, brand new shoes (that fit) and a VDO computer.  It was in Alabama and shipping cam out to $50 so don't be afraid to search other areas.  California and Arizona seem to have good bikes on there pretty often but be sure to ask lots of questions, get pictures of everything and use paypal to protect yourself.

Hope this helps
