I had heard the Iron Girl Bike ride was long and very hilly, it is going to be the toughest part for me, I need to get working on those hills. So far my biking experience has been in spin classes and on a trainer in my living room on a road bike I borrowed from a friend. I have yet to go on out the road and I confess I am somewhat nervous about it, the falling over part due to being new to the clipless pedals.

The Acworth sprint sounds good, I will have to check it out since I do need to plan some additional races for this season.

Yes, the bike course was very hilly.  I confess that I had to get off my bike once.  It was a pretty steep hill that caught me off guard (pretty early in the bike segment).  However, I was NOT the only one walking my bike up the hill.  I had some good company

Ken gave me some advice about getting used to the clipless pedals.  So, I'll pass that along.  He suggested to go out for a "ride" with the sole intent of practicing clipping in and out of the pedals.  You'll be fine.

I have the same challenge with distances to the pools nearest me.  I need to get driving and get in them!

I'm joining a beginner's cycling group on Saturday for the first time.  I think they are more about socializing than training, but we'll see.

I wasn't able to keep track of my distance at first either.  No matter how hard I tried to concentrate, I would always lose track.  So I bought one of these:

now all I have to do is push a button every lap.  I wish I could say it made me a faster swimmer, but at least I know just how slow I'm going now. Laughing

Subject: optimal times: swim , bike, run

I was wondering, whar are the optimal times/pace  I should be shooting for?

It probably depends on the distance but I have know idea what is good. Example: I'm doing a 56 m bike, what should be my pace? or swim 1500 m, what time is really good and where in relation to that should I probably be as an age grouper just starting out?

I'm one of those techies who like to have all the bells and whistles so I got the Chrono 100.  I used the lap recall quite a bit at first just to see how much variation there was between laps but now that I'm a pretty consistent swimmer (consistently slow) I think I would probably get the combo @ $29.95.

Ken, re: makes sense on periodically monitoring speed/distance.  i think i mentioned in my intro, i surprised myself at the sprint this past weekend in that the swimming was my strongest segment AND i was a heckuva lot faster than i expected.  this has inspired me to get even fast and to bring my biking and running segments closer to my swim performance.

Unfortunately, there is no answer for this.  What should determine your pace is your own fitness level, genetics, course topography, weather conditions, etc.  Periodically measure your fitness using heart rate, pace, power, or other tools and then you can compare your own fitness at one point in time to your own fitness at a later point in time. 

If you absolutely want to know where you will fall, you can look at previous years race results and get some idea.

that's a great attitude to have !!!  The best athletes are good at all 3 sports and will spend a lot of time developing the weaker sports.  It's fun to surprise yourself once in a while isn't it?

I lose track of swimming laps on anything above a 100yd set.  I've found that I can keep better track of them if I do this:  ex 200yd set I would start with a, b, c, d for each wall touch of the first 100, then I'd be 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d for each wall touch during the second 100. 

The other thing I've started to notice as my swimming volume has increased is that if I look at my watch, I can usually figure out which lap I'm on (ie 4:05 I'd know I was on my 200)

ken -- very nice to surprise oneself -- especially when the surprise is going faster than you think you can.  i reckon the goal is to do better in competition than in practice, eh?

Mainer22 -- i just had my first race, a sprint.  am signed up for an Olympic in September, The Nation's Triathlon.  this first race was nice and early in the season so i have a good baseline of my performance level and clearly know where i need to improve.  i hope to do at least two more sprints before september but haven't scheduled anything yet.

Wow that's coming right up, I read your race report from your last one.  Must be a good feeling to have 1 under your belt now huh?  Why was it a "reverse" sprint?  Because of the pool swim?

One big motivator for me right now, being new to this type of training, is that I'm seeing nice jumps in terms of (a) building endurance, (b) finishing times improving (albeit at training level pace), and (c) more bang for the buck for the same level of effort......I'm sure as I adjust and get better, I'll see smaller jumps, but for now these little benchmarks serve as additional motivators for me to continue to push myself and to not miss any scheduled workouts (because I'm tired, because I don't feel like it, because 24 is on TV, etc).  Now that I've got a few weeks of training under me, I also keep tabs on my weekly bar graphs in the training log.  It helps me to "stick to the plan".

This morning I swam 1100yards, only taking breaks as needed when my form was getting real sloppy (as opposed to just regular sloppy).  I finished in 27:43.  I wasn't really hammering, just trying to stay at a consistent pace.  My first sprint is roughly 1100yards and I'd like to be under 20 minutes.  Not sure how realistic that is, but 1100 is 44 laps so that's....11 seconds per lap to shave off.

From about the 700 yard mark to the 1100, I was resting after every 100 - sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes 1 minute.  I'm pretty confident that once I build up my stamina to the point where I can straight swim the distance, just by eliminating the breaks I'd be down into the low 20's.  There's a "total immersion" clinic coming up in May that I was thinking of looking into.

The principles of total immersion are spot on !!!  If it's not more than a couple hundered, I would strongly consider it.  I'm not a complete total immersion fan since they basically require you to start over from scratch.  (which most adults have a hard time doing without rushing through too quickly, therefore negating the whole process) If you end up doing it, take your time with each drill until you have it nailed before moving on to the next.  let me know what you end up doing.

It sure is! My girlfriend used to live in Atlanta and rode that trail a lot, so every once in a while we go there when we visit her folks. We did 55 miles that day, which was my longest ride, so that was kinda cool.

Ken, I indeed had an awesome workout. I started a high impact step aerobic class last year and continue to punish myself in it three times a week. The instructor is a marathon runner as well and takes no prisoners. Most guys see it as too feminine to do, however, I can tell you that after 27 years of Army training, this is challenging! In addition, I joined a triatlhlon club (Infinite Multisports Triathlon Club) in my area. They have a USAT tri coach on board in addition to being very supportive. The coach there recommended a book-The Triathletes Training Bible, it's a good read and packed with info as well ($26.00 at Barnes and Noble). First race is a sprint in July...excited about it!

Definitely had a good workout this weekend...

Did just under 23 miles on the bike in the mountains. It was brutal (at least to me!), but great training on some hills.

I'll have to get the picture of us in front of the "All vehicles use a lower gear" sign that we passed along our route!

Weber02: I also picked up the Triathlete's Training Bible recently and it does looks like tons of good info.

Anyone have info/input/advice on a decent, inexpense tri bike? As a beginner, I'm sure you can relate to not wanting to spend lots of mula yet on equipment, nonethetless, have something other than a mountain bike purchased at Meijer's from years ago.

It is great to have a little experience now.  That first one was a lot tougher than I was expecting, mostly due to the weather, but I loved it.

There are quite a few early and late season reverse sprints here in Albuquerque.  They reverse the order of events (run first then bike then swim) so that you don't have to go out in the cold while you are wet from the swim.

I took Sunday off, unscheduled.  Who knew that my spouse, kids, and dog actually require attention once in awhile?

Also, I had some weird pain in the backside of my left knee, roughly directly behind the knee moving towards the inside....kind of hard to actually describe location but it felt like where the hamstrings merge into the behind the knee area.....Not sure what the trigger was, but I'm guessing it came from pushing the bike too much or maybe a bad fit on the bike???  Seems to be getting better.  I'm riding today too, at an easier pace, so we'll see.

Swam this morning.  I'm real happy with progression there.
