Goal may be to not drown (which is always a good goal in my opinion) but you also need to worry about the swim cut-off time.

Had a GREAT workout today.  Did 25 mins on the treadmill walk/run intervals and felt strong.  In the pool my training plan called for 100 yards but I was feeling *really* fatigued after just a couple laps.

My lucky day when a swim coach happened to share my lane.

Found out I'm kicking way too hard.  She said "perfect for the ocean but we're in a pool" and I guess I'm not keeping my head down.  Once I slowed down my kick and focused on keeping my head down I went another 250 yards before I fatigued!

I am pretty confident that if I dont drown, I should make the cutoff - my 1.2 mile times in the pool are 45 -47 minutes.

Nice work Susan

Scott - Keep working, I have yet to find a correlation between pool time swim and OWS swim times.

I would think Pool times may be slower than OWS especially if you are the back - wouldnt you be pulled faster by the 1500 swimmers in front of you?

Unless you get caught in a slow group, have anxiety problem, tire, etc. It's an interesting question, I'll see if I can find some info on that

Hiya all - sorry for disappearing so quickly.  I wrote my intro while finishing my portion of Christmas dinner and then spent the next two days with family, the one after that returning stuff and the ones since then sick as a dog with some sort of demonic stomach flu.  Here's hoping that means I won't get sick for the rest of the year!

One more day to recover for me - especially since they're not letting us out of work early - and then I have to get back on the stick.

I know it's not the way you want to lose weight but I'm 5 lbs down for the week after my illness.  Hey, accentuate the positives!

Have a great day everyone!

Some quick catching up on the thread too:

Lani - I hope you get that watch to work.  It looks really neat!

Seth - congrats on the weight loss!

Scott - Take it from someone who started slower than you and improved greatly (but is still, admittedly, slow) - the drills help immensely.  I'm not sure what your program calls for but the silver level ones that I have used incorporate them into the training.  You can probably do it yourself via the listing here:
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/index.asp?catid=158

Believe me, even if you get to a pokey 1:50 per 100, you will be blowing by people and feeling good about yourself, not to mention feel much more comfortable in the water.

Kari - I am so in the same boat as you, right down to incorporating a C25k program in my training.  Enjoy your last few days of freedom!

Susan - enjoy your vacation and the snow!  All of ours is gone from the rain now.

Okay, it's back to work for me now...

Today I got back ON the bandwagon. Despite not going to the Gym for 5 days, I have been feeling really good about myself! Laughing
Anyways, I did my run today, but pushed myself a little bit harder.
Right now I am focusing on my running. Like I said I want to do a Sprint in Sept, and have done a 5k. However I wasn't confident in my abilities and really pushed my body to complete the 5k without stopping or walking. My goal is another 5k at the end of March. Right now, in my training, I go for 25-30 minutes. I can consecutively run for about 7-10 minutes. I am building it up and going a little bit faster.
In all the running programs I have looked it, it has 3 training days. Running is my primary workout, and I love it, so I go 4-5 a week (4 days cconsecutively). My question is, Should I strictly follow the 3-day/week? To be honest, I would feel lame only going 3 days a week, or do you suggest I find another workout (Hello Bike!) to do on my 4/5 days?

Kari - YEAH YOU!!! I have long since gotten over my "need" to run the WHOLE way and figured out that it's about covering the distance. Went to a seminar with Jeff Galloway, very doubtful and left willing to try the whole run/walk thing. Turns out I run much faster incorporating walking breaks into my runs.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Kari,
All the programs I've seen say always skip a day between run workouts (or between any 2 workouts of the same activity).

Scott,
Great to see you put in some yardage in the pool!  Keep it up and your times will improve.

My experience and the research I've seen says you will almost always be slower in open water due to waves, currents, wind, temperature, and all the other uncontrolled variables that are controlled in a swimming pool, which usually has physical barriers and temperature controls to control these things.  Drafting behind someone else may help partially alleviate some of these, but then you're limited by the speed of the person in front of you.

Even if you don't get super fast, all the training programs I've seen emphasize that the more efficient your swim the more energy you'll have for the 'real' distance and time investments in the triathlon (bike and run).  Drills (and just plain yardage done 'right') are where you'll find efficiency (in the swim, bike, and run).

Kari,
To echo Lani's advice, run/walk may be the right prescription for your fastest triathlon 'run' time.

My best 5k time, run/walked during one of the workouts in my beginning runner program, is 26 minutes (8:40/mi), which I wouldn't know anything about except I have a buddy who runs 5ks and only has a 27:21 5k with a straight run (9:07/mi).

I'm no expert in running since I only began running this year at the tender age of 39.  However, my c210k program is a walk to run program and I have yet to run more than 10 minutes straight despite many regular 30 to 50 minute run/walk workouts.  The program ('The Beginning Runner's Handbook: The Proven 13-Week Walk-Run Program') commits to readying for a 10k over 13 weeks with 3 workouts per week.  Due to time constraints and illness I'll probably complete the 39 workouts in about 6 months, but nonetheless I feel myself improving as a runner every workout and I'm enjoying the progress.  (I still hate running LOL but I have to finish a run to finish a triathlon, and my pride won't let me walk the whole way!).

Thanks Dylan - from what I have heard, the race I am doing actually has a current with the swimmers, and its a lake. Noone is able to explain why, but everyone has said this. Plus I will hve the hopefull benefit of a full wetsuit. Maybe I can sneak a little motor under the suit
