I will probably be arriving early afternoon. I do have a hotel in Dowagiac me and my wife are staying in. I am told its about 20 mins form Benton Harbor. Maybe we all could meet at one of the race briefings and head out from there. |

For those planning to put their bike in transition on Friday night, will you cover the seat and handlebars no matter what? Or only if there is rain in the forecast? Also, should I remove my bike computer (just the computer part, not the sensors) and put it back on in the morning? I heard that traffic can be bad coming from the south. We're staying at the Howard Johnson, which should only be about a 15 min drive normally. Do you think leaving at 5:00/5:15 am is early enough to beat the heavy traffic? |

I racked mine on the Friday night last year and I'll do so again this year. Totally worth not having to haul my bike ALONG with all my crap in the AM. I got dropped off last year right at the intersection where it goes up to the beach and then my family met up with me at the race site later on during the day. I went too late last year - I think around 6am and I just about missed my swim start. So I'll go earlier so I have time to frig around with my transition spot. We're coming from the other direction though. |

The only thing I'll do if its raining is stick my running shoes in a plastic bag that morning - ya they'll get wet when I'm running but they won't be soggy when I'm putting them on. Last year I ended up driving myself and taking the shuttle. It worked out ok, but the traffic was bad - took about 15-20 minutes to get parked, but the shuttles they had were fine. The biggest problem was finding my car when the race was over. This year I think I'll have my wife or dad drop me off at the intersection so I don't have to worry about all of that. We're staying at the Howard Johnson on Ferguson - I'll probably leave around 5. |

I don't know if I agree entirely with the "very hilly" - and I come from southern Ontario where the biggest hill is the overpass on the freeway. It is rolling but nothing compared to Peterborough or Lake Placid. Yes there is a big hill on the run that you have to go up twice - but they had a whole team of people standing at the top cheering you on. For the most part I didn't find the elevation on the run too tough. The bike course is rolling - but I don't remember anything really terrible. So if I'm swimming south and I breath to my right each stroke, might I get a mouth full of wave if the lake is a little choppy? Even so, probably would trade this for a tailwind on the bike - just not a big fan of bilateral breathing when swimming. Or maybe the lake will be calm enough and i'm over analyzing the wind direction! |

I don't have a thermometer but it felt as warm as my local inland lake (kent Lake) I was cooking in a full suit. um... there were people surfing. It was fun swimming in the surf. My guess is that it is calmer in the morning. |

I was planning on racking my bike the night before and bringing a pump with me in the morning - my tires seem to lose about 10psi sitting there overnight and I've been finding that that extra pressure really helps me on the ride. I sent a message to the race director asking him what those of us who won't have family there before the race are supposed to do but haven't heard back yet. Anyone else in this situation? Worse comes to worse I might just wait till that morning to rack my bike. |

(I don't even own a pump )Dan - ya, they also say that there will be a limited number of them floating around the transition area and recommend that you bring your own. I'd rather not be walking around in the dark (and it will be dark when we're there) trying to find a pump. As an aside, there were people last year who brought flash lights and it was a good idea. |
