Would be cool to meet up with all and have dinner. I will probably be arriving early afternoon. I do have a hotel in Dowagiac me and my wife are staying in. I am told its about 20 mins form Benton Harbor.

Maybe we all could meet at one of the race briefings and head out from there.

Everyone has posted great information for my first HM.

Where do I see my race bib number?  I checked the Steelhead site and just found a participant list without bib numbers.

Keep me posted with any plans for a meetup,  it would be great to meet other fellow BT'ers

I'm bib#372, in wave 5 (7:18 am).

For those planning to put their bike in transition on Friday night, will you cover the seat and handlebars no matter what?  Or only if there is rain in the forecast?  Also, should I remove my bike computer (just the computer part, not the sensors) and put it back on in the morning?

I heard that traffic can be bad coming from the south.  We're staying at the Howard Johnson, which should only be about a 15 min drive normally.  Do you think leaving at 5:00/5:15 am is early enough to beat the heavy traffic?

I've always figured you're wet getting on the bike - why does it matter if it gets wet before the race?  (I have a synthetic seat.)  It won't be the first time it's gotten wet and it won't be the last...  I won't leave my computer on tho.  That goes on in the AM.

I racked mine on the Friday night last year and I'll do so again this year.  Totally worth not having to haul my bike ALONG with all my crap in the AM.

I got dropped off last year right at the intersection where it goes up to the beach and then my family met up with me at the race site later on during the day.  I went too late last year - I think around 6am and I just about missed my swim start.  So I'll go earlier so I have time to frig around with my transition spot.  We're coming from the other direction though.

X2 what Stef says.  I'll put my Garmin on in the morning. The only thing I'll do if its raining is stick my running shoes in a plastic bag that morning - ya they'll get wet when I'm running but they won't be soggy when I'm putting them on.

Last year I ended up driving myself and taking the shuttle.  It worked out ok, but the traffic was bad - took about 15-20 minutes to get parked, but the shuttles they had were fine.  The biggest problem was finding my car when the race was over. This year I think I'll  have my wife or dad drop me off at the intersection so I don't have to worry about all of that.  We're staying at the Howard Johnson on Ferguson - I'll probably leave around 5.

I watched the race last year and this year just doing the run. It is a very hilly course and I am told it gets really hot up on the bluff. I did Racine 70.3 on Sunday and would suggest drinking tons on the ride if the weather is going to be warm. At the start of my run it was 90 degrees.

Looking forward to this race, it was very organized last year! Good luck everyone!

I don't know if I agree entirely with the "very hilly" - and I come from southern Ontario where the biggest hill is the overpass on the freeway.  It is rolling but nothing compared to Peterborough or Lake Placid.

Yes there is a big hill on the run that you have to go up twice - but they had a whole team of people standing at the top cheering you on.  For the most part I didn't find the elevation on the run too tough.  The bike course is rolling - but I don't remember anything really terrible.

ETA: I re-read my race entry from last year - there were a couple hills that were challenging on the bike but only a couple.

calling for high 79/ low 69 and 11mph wind

perfect conditions if it stays, maybe a touch windy but not bad

also calling for wind out of the Noth Northeast which would be dead opposite of last year and gives us last 16 miles or so down Blue Star w/ a nice 11 mph tail wind

i hope the 10 day is close if not correct

Knock on all the wood I can find!  Those winds last year killed me.  I'll take 11mph any day and especially a tail wind on the last leg.

looks good - hope it holds!

So if I'm swimming south and I breath to my right each stroke, might I get a mouth full of wave if the lake is a little choppy?  Even so, probably would trade this for a tailwind on the bike - just not a big fan of bilateral breathing when swimming.  Or maybe the lake will be calm enough and i'm over analyzing the wind direction!

I was out at the swim site today. The water is warm. I don't have a thermometer but it felt as warm as my local inland lake (kent Lake) I was cooking in a full suit. um... there were people surfing. It was fun swimming in the surf. My guess is that it is calmer in the morning.

The local News paper this morning gave a water temp of 78. It sounds about right.  I rode part of the bike course. The section on highway-65 is smooooth.

I just read the rules that were posted on the site and they state that tire pumps won't be allowed near the racks once the race starts.  I was planning on racking my bike the night before and bringing a pump with me in the morning - my tires seem to lose about 10psi sitting there overnight and I've been  finding that that extra pressure really helps me on the ride.  I sent a message to the race director asking him what those of us who won't have family there before the race are supposed to do but haven't heard back yet.  Anyone else in this situation?  Worse comes to worse I might just wait till that morning to rack my bike.

I read somewhere on there, that pumps will be available, in the transition area, for just such cases. I'll see if I can find where I saw that. (I don't even own a pump Embarassed)

Here it is. From page 7 of the athlete guide.

The transition area will open at 4:30 a.m. on race
morning. Body marking will begin at this time just
outside the main entrance to the transition area. During
the body marking process, athletes are responsible
for ensuring that the volunteers mark their age as
of December 31 of that year, which corresponds with
the age division in which the athlete will compete on
race day. Remember to bring your bike and run gear,
ChampionChip, swim cap, goggles and wetsuit. Bike
technicians and pumps will be available in the transition
area race morning. Please do not wear your bib
number in the swim. Leave it with your gear and put
on before you head out on the bike course. The number
will not hold up for the duration of the race if it
gets wet. If you have misplaced any of these items,
please see the transition area director for a replacement.
Do not apply sunscreen, oil, vaseline or lotion
until after you have been body marked. The transition
area closes at 6:45 a.m. All athletes must be out of
transition and headed to the swim before this time.

Dan - ya, they also say that there will be a limited number of them floating around the transition area and recommend that you bring your own.  I'd rather not be walking around in the dark (and it will be dark when we're there) trying to find a pump.

As an aside, there were people last year who brought flash lights and it was a good idea.

Flash light. Now that is a good Idea. I would have never thought of that.  I'm in wave #4 and will be starting at 7:11 AM.
