razorxp - 2010-12-23 10:01 PM Sure Deb,

I  think we all struggle with nutrition, especially right now with all the goodies.  A 1/2 in Feb, what distances are you at right now?

The goodies. Ahhh the goodies - I love food. Yes, it is really hard right now. I shall be in NY this weekend, then after that I plan on really getting serious again. I am down 28lbs so far, so I just have to ramp it up.

Distance wise, I am attempting 8 miles on Monday. I am using a HH intermediate training plan. So far so good.

Just be carefull not to ramp it up too fast.  Rule of thumb 5% increase per week, but listen to your body. Great job on the 28lbs.

Kevin, I know you have a coach but you might take a look the stuff from Total Immersion.  The guy that teaches it, Terry Laughlin, does some videos for this site.  I read through his book and got the DVD off his website and did wonders for me.

Seeing everyone's posts about nutrition I thought I'd throw it out there that my degree is in nutrition with an emphasis in exercise.  I don't know how much help I can be because things could have changed some since I graduated ('05) but I'll answer questions the best I can.

I have looked at the TI site and am currently reading his book - great stuff and I am sure it will eventually sink in I hope - LOL.

Ok - can anyone tell me if there is a simple tutorial on how to use one of  the programs and tie them into my training log? Do I have to download anything into the training log or do I simply print of the plan I want to try and input the data into my training log myself?

Thanks.

This should show you how to import a training plan to your log.

Thanks Caleb.

I am guessing to use this feature you have to be at minimum a bronze member or can you do it as a non paying member/

Thanks for your help.

Yeah you have to be a bronze member to import into your log.  You can print the training plan out if you're a non-paying member and still use the training log to log your training.  I don't remember what the bronze level membership cost is but it's pretty cheap.  You might take a look into it.  It's really nice to have your training in your log and then being to move it around as you need.

Hi! It was my understanding that we were to friend our mentor teammates and set log status to public, but I'm having trouble finding where to "friend" one another. I'll get the log status figured.

Also on the training, I think I will either need to combine several programs, snagging the parts that work best for me or experiment with the custom feature.

For the swimming the best one I've seen so far, starts with one length of the pool with the crawl and then a resting stroke return (sidestroke or breast stroke) Continuing for a predetermined length of time. It is a similar idea to the C25K program, focused on building endurance, then speed. I think this will prepare me to start swimming in the lake by spring.
Ok silly question Embarassed is there a way to listen to tunes while swimming?

To add friends you have to click on "settings" at the top of the page and then click on "training blog customization."  There is a "friends" tab and you type in the person's screen name.

There are underwater pouches for your mp3 player.  Check out www.swimoutlet.com

I am lucky that my office is attached to a large warehouse and I get to walk around it a couple of times a day I am not a super talkative person but I will try more!

My husband told me tonight that I need to weight train with more weights and less reps so that I become stronger for running and what not. Do you feel this is correct?

Good Morning.

I ran into a guy at the pool the other day and he was using a finis swim mp3 when he was swimming. I asked him about it and he said it worked great.

Hope that helps.

Just want to wish everyone a merry Christmas!  I still want to be part of the group, but will be offline for a few days because of the hollyday.

I am going to fix my log so you guys can check it out.  Just ran 4 miles on the treadmill.  Didn't feel to bad even though I could tell my mind wasn't into it.

Check out the Total Immersion videos if you want to see some unbelievable swimming!

My spelling is so bad.  We'll blame it on fat fingers! Laughing

First off let me just formally say hi to everyone and I look forward to working with and learning from everyone.

As far as my "A" races this year I am doing the Illinois Marathon in April.  I am training to go sub 4 hour.  My current PR is 4:26.  My other "A" is the Racine 70.3 in July.  I did Branson in 6:34 (brutal hills and heat). I will be shooting for 5:45 in Racine.

Also I used this in my last group and it made it real easy to check everyones logs.  Just copy and past it into your log header (look at my log and you will see)  This links to each person logs.

Is there room for one more?

My name is Erin and I'm looking forward to the upcoming tri season. My family is in town for Christmas and there is a line for the computer. I'll post more later but my A (and only) race in the upcoming year is Barbs Race which is a HIM at the same time as Vineman.

Will post more later

Thanks!

Its the other way around.  Less weight and more reps will build strength- more weight less reps will build bulk.  I am not really knowledgeable in this topic so I am sure someone can explain it in more detail.  But when I lift, my rule of thumb is that I do 12-15 reps and complete them just to the point where I could maybe do 1 more rep.  I will then increase my weights when it seems to easy.  If you are just starting to lift take it REAL easy to start as you can get hurt very easily.

Room for one more? I'd love to join this group!

My name is Bryan, 27 years old, and 2011 will be my first Tri year!  Ever since I was a little kid, I watched the Kona Ironman and it only lived as a dream for me.  I never made the decision to do any triathlons and as a kid it's quite difficult to make that the sport of choice.  I took up ice hockey instead and played through high school.  Now, 27, I have become overweight and in an attempt to lose weight I joined a relay team for a marathon.  I was addicted and decided to make the triathlon a reality.  I have been training in the summer time and since the fall I have been training hard to get my body in shape.  I've lost a significant amount of weight and still losing.  Anyways, my 'A' race is either the Vineman 70.3 (on waitlist) or the Timberman 70.3.  I will be doing a handfull of half-mary's and one or two sprints in the summer.  I look forward to everything that this year will bring and looking forward to working with this group!

Merry Christmas!

Bryan

As far as my "A" race, I guess I do not have one.  I want to do the HIM in panama city beach (May) and I would love to do the full IM in panama city but it closes out very quickly.  I am considering the beach2battleship full in NC in Nov.  But I will take it slow and see how the first HIM goes.  I am considering the sea side half marathon in March if work and family can all agree.

My real goal is to work toward a full IM.  I have always lifted weights so I thought my natural body weight was around 200-205 but since I have started swimming and biking more I am now down to around 187.  I am fine with continuing to lose weight if it helps with my times.  I am not a distance runner so I will try anything to help.

Good Afternoon Everyone.

I made a bit of a mistake in my training log for yesterdays workout that was brought to my attention. For anyone that caught it or saw it - I do not run 5 minute miles on my treadmill LOL. It was my first time entering info on there and I obviously made a bit of a mistake. Anyway, correction has been made. Maybe one day Laughing

Merry Christmas Everyone.

Thats exactly what I was hoping for. I wish I had thought of it a few weeks ago when family was wanting to know what I wanted to Christmas, LOL.

Caleb, exciting news on Chiropractic school; just finished a big move ourselves! Recommend you recruit all the help you can, use a moving book(to record and save all moving notes and info) and keep training   It'll save your sanity.

Merry Christmas Everyone! I'm checking out the total immersion info but would love move recommends for reading or podcasts, I have so much to learn
Blessings

Hello everyone!I think we are at a good number now and I will close the group now, my problem is I'm on a cell phone so not sure if I can do it. Welcome the last new members and I will check back once on a screen bigger than 4".I was thinking yesterday and a few have asked if I thought a certain plan would be good for them, so to help me and the group out lets have every one post the following info:

Where are you now (ie distance or time)
Swim
Bike
Run
Lifting weight/coreWeight (if you want to post if not just put how many lbs to goal)

THEN Where do you want to be (ie race distance /or time/weight)
Tell me if that makes sense to everyone?
If I dont talk to everyone have a great Christmas

i will get to a few questions but as for where i am now -i am biking and swimming more than running.   i have had a sinus infection for about a month and have not felt like running.  i am starting an 18 wk HIM plan on jan 3rd.

a few of my many questions are...

1. what plan do you use for traning for a half HIM? (i have two.  one is a time based plan and the other is a mile based plan)

2.  for those that lift weights- how often do you lift when training for a specific race and do you train legs at all?
