We are new to triathalons. I have run only 2 5k with a not so great time but working toward improvement. We have 2 5k races a month in this area so we hope that to be the strong part of our events. We bought 2 walmart bikes and take a 8 miles ride once a week. It is cold so we are hoping to join a gym to improve our workout ability and they have a heated pool! Our 11 year old son also wants to tri so he goes with us and thinking about signing up for the sait anthonys meek and mighty in April. We need mentors to help us to push for our goals and advice along the way.  Hope to hear back from you soon but a quick question. If we used now as a starting point when should we be ready for our first tri?

Welcome to the group.

It's kind of hard to give you a concrete answer to your question as there are many factors at play. You have been working out, which is good, but only riding once a week isn't going to give you much improvment. If you can fit 2-3 runs, and 2-3 bikes in a week, plus swim as much as possible, you can easily be ready by spring. I can't tell you it will be easy, but I can tell you it will be worth it.

Not a problem, I have a lab that really does eat everything, and a Great Dane pup that can be coerced to eat your project.

If you've got room for one more, I'd like to join.  Here's my backstory:
Name: George / cornchexs
History: I've been involved in triathlon for about 9 years, with varying degrees of success.  I started in the sport as a means to lose weight.  In that regard, I've been moderately successful.  I've lost 60 lbs and kept most of it off.  (I gained about 15 lbs over the last few months but I'm back training, so that will come off.)  My experience goes from many sprints, to ~10 Olys, 4 HIM's and 1 IM (last year at Louisville.
Goals: My primary goal is to lose the 15 lbs that I gained and drop another 10 or so after that.  I aim to do that through an increased workout regimen and better eating habits.  Race goals include a couple of sprints, 1-2 Oly's, maybe an HIM, and Redman Full in September.
Home Life: I'm married, 14 years, and the father of 4 boys (17, 16, 11, 10).  My 2 youngest sons are special needs kids.  My wife participates in triathlons as well, though she has been down for most of last year due to various injuries.  Most of my training occurs early in the AM or at lunch as evenings are my time with the family.  I do get some time on weekend mornings to train, so I can get in long workouts then.

I think that about covers it.  I'm looking to get some additional motivation out of this group.  I figure that this will give me some accountability to someone other than myself, so it will provide me with the push that I may need on days where I just don't want to workout.

Thanks.
-George

I'm in. My goal is 4-5 per week, trying to get to ~5-6 miles or so by the end of January. I've got an obstacle course race on January 29 that is next on the calendar. Thanks for having me!

I had to go conservative. I have not been able to do any cardio since Oct 31st. My cardiologist just cleared me to do light cardio, so starting back into it I went with 3x a week. Don't worry, soon it will be 4, and just wait until I put biking in there, too.

I'm ready to go!  My plan is to start preparation for the season on March 1, so I've got about 6 weeks to get the foundation of a training base.  I want to be able to run ~6 miles comfortably (if there is such a thing) by that point.  Bring on the bikes!

Who here has a trainer or rollers for their bike? If you don't have one of those, do you have access to a stationary or spin bike?

Don't have a trainer but have access to a stationary bike @ the gym.  Going for a swim @ the gym tonight.  Following the plan, i'm going to swim 500 meters in 50m intervals w/30 seconds of rest between.
