I finished the 1st test week.  My 5' test was 247w, 20' was 216w for a C.P. of 206w. About were I expected to be after having way too much time off the bike this year, now the real training begins! Tongue out

Day 1 of week 1 complete.  I had to guess on my power.  I think I got it pretty close because it was hard, but not unmanageable.  I am interested to see how the first test comes out.  I know the pain is coming, and I am ready for it!

I am now into week 6 and I would have to say that the two worse workouts I have done were day#34 (week 5 day 4 long ride) and day# 36 (week 6 day 1). Those two workouts took pain and suffering to a whole new level that I never thought possible. As bad as those two workouts were I am sure there are more workouts coming up that are probably far worse than those two were. That is a frightening thought.

Week one done.  If this is a preparation week, I think I am for a lot of pain when the regular workouts hit.  I look forward to it!

Either I must be very oblivious to the obvious...or I'm just not sure.

I would like to start this program this week, already did my 20 minute test. I also would like to use Trainerroad in conjunction, however, the Trainerroad Jorge's program is very different than the BT Winter Program. I'm confused, on which is "better".

If you notice the first day of TR program is the test. Then it has the second day as Palmer. 5x30" build, then rest build, then 10x2" then cool down.

I don't see that ANYWHERE within the first week or two of the Winter Cycling Program.

Goal - of course is to get faster, but with better endurance. I'm not sure if that's the program for me as I'm doing several Centuries, not triathlons. I would like to get faster, with better power, better endurance, and of course get much better on hills.

If I'm picking the wrong program, can anyone lead me the right way?
Thanks!!

IMHO I like the BT program because it is longer and it seems to have a better structure to it.

So How's everyone doing?  I just did the phase 2 tests, saw some nice gains as my legs (i.e. fitness) are starting to come back to me:

 Test 1 ResultsTest 2 ResultsTest 2 vs Test 1
Interval 1, (5 minutes)247.1 (19.6 mph)269.7 (20.4 mph)22.6
Interval 2 (20 minutes)215.9 (18.4 mph)244.4 (19.5 mph)28.5
Calculated Critical Power205.5236.030.5

Now it's onto those dreaded 6x4' workouts!

Question for you guys...

Wrapping up the Hal Higdon HM plan with taper week this coming week... and about to enter week 9 of this program... I really want to maximize my opportunity for a PR on the HM and I am considering pushing the cycling off a week... or possibly just doing some short, low impact trainer rides (READ: 30 min low intensity sessions)... thoughts?

Thanks!

Hello everyone.

I am about six weeks in to the 'power' version of the programme and although I am feeling slightly deflated (I will explain in a minute) I just wanted to say a big thank you to Jorge (and any others responsible for it) for having put this together.

Why am I deflated, well my first FTP test resulted in a CP of 294. I have just completed my second FTP test this morning and it has dropped ;(  It is now only 289.

Obviously I am not working hard enough so I will push myself and report back in the coming weeks.

Thanks everyone.

Comparing the 1st test and 2nd test 5' and 20' test results, did both lower? one increase other decrease?  Also, has your trainer setup changed at all (same tire, same psi, same coast down check, etc)?

My trainer setup is the same, no equipment change, infact my setup is dedicated to this training so the bike has not even moved from the turbo.

Cadence was 102 AVG for both tests, the only thing I can think of was the time of day. This time I had breakfast and then did the test about 45 mins later. The first test was done at 14:30. Today was warmer as well so maybe I suffered with the heat a little more.

I wonder if I was just not pushing hard enough through the whole test. I might have done the first 5 mins to easy I think. I paid attention to the advice on how to ride the 20 min test this time, where as the first time I just went for it in an ignorant fashion.

The 5 min test is tricky. My first one went wrong from a data log perspective so I cannot rely on the numbers and my next 5 min test is not until Saturday. My best 5 min power this year from Trainingpeaks (where I upload everything) is 375 watts so I will compare to that on Saturday.

I will see what the next 20 min test brings as well before I get too depressed over it

Thanks for your input as well.
