Not pleasant, and closes down shop for business.

Closes down the business district for sure. And hurts. Boo.

It's always disappointing when visiting a favorite establishment only to be greeted with a "closed for/during....." sign.

Hiya.

Bonjour.

Sorry folks, park's closed. Moose out front should have told 'ya.

Even I KNOW this quote!!!!

Ahh the Griswolds...

Those of you at IMAZ, you should go up to the Grand Canyon and do the Griswold.

(Walk to the edge of the Canyon, look right look left, say "OK, let's go!")

I did that twice before I finally went downriver to go fishing.

I did that my one and only time I went to the GG. And I live in AZ. When I went it was storming so the clouds were at the top and I could see NOTHING in the canyon. How ironic. So I have on video me looking over the edge doing the Clark Griswold. Never been back.

Someone told me that fewer than 50% of native born Arizonans have been to the GC.

I also know at least 10 people who got up there in the dark and stayed at the El Tovar Hotel and didn't realize they were 10 feet from the edge of the canyon until the next morning after breakfast and after they asked their waitress "How far is it to the Grand Canyon?"

I'm not native born. I've been to Flagstaff and Sedona hundreds of times but never had the desire to take the short drive up to the GG. I got lots of canyons and such in my own backyard. One day I will go hike the GG and it will bring great joy! Anyone is free to join me!

Psh... I went there BEFORE I moved to AZ!

That said - that 50% number isn't surprising - based on the locals that I've encountered...

I've decided to be a tourist in my own state. I have lots of day trips planned. Go in with the eyes of a tourist. All of this becomes wallpaper to us because we live here. I've done a lot of that in our area already. Have you been to the Titan Missile Silo and San Xavier Mission?

Pima Air Museum is down near you guys.  Last time I went there, it was better than the Air and Space Museum IMO.

How about Meteor Crater?  That's a pretty good Griswold Moment.

If I were to go to the GC for the first time again, I'd take the train from Williams, AZ.  (If you do, you'll see my wind farm on the west side of the train).

Only after I eat popcorn...

No, I developed that wind farm.

If I die of a heart attack, it'll be due to the stress and poor self maintenance I observed while developing that wind farm.

In the last year or so they updated a wind farm near me with newer and much bigger windmills. It's impressive stuff - would be fun to work with.

It's the Altamount Pass wind farm (I think thats what they call it) - just outside Livermore, CA.

Whenever I pass the wind farms, I wonder how fast the tips of the blades are moving and how much fun it would be to hold on for a bit.

Depending on the type of turbine, it could be over 200 MPH at the tip.  21 revolutions per minute max, 100 meter radius, pi R Squared, you can get the answer if you calculate it out.  I did a spreadsheet once, but it's on an old computer that I don't have any more.
