If the forecast holds up the air temp will be a few degrees cooler than normal (and many degrees cooler than last year!). I say it every year... if you have a wetsuit, bring it! Due to the size of the body of water, a few days of windy conditions and a cool evening could drop the temp a few degrees overnight. The air and water temps have been pretty consistent for the last week and I do not expect them to move a lot. The official temp will not be taken until around 5am on race morning. |

That was the WORST part of the day last year. NONE of the volunteers at the convention center had any clue on how to get there. |

However it also sounds like the roughest section is the 1-ish mile connector between 35 and 1100 on route 900. We will ride this section twice... Once around mile 20 and again at mile 36. |

| 36 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Muncie : Official Thread There is a mile stretch of road on the north side of the reservoir on Burlington that is not good, you will hit it twice, at miles 4 and 51ish (not in front of my maps). We have the best course guys in the business and the course will be clean, marked, potholes filled (if possible, or marked if not). It should be a good ride! |

They supposedly have live updates on their website with an athlete tracker that will update when you cross each timing mat (all transitions plus usually a few out on the course as well.) I say "supposedly" because sometimes it doesn't update very fast. It should be front page tomorrow on www.ironman.com, or you could try www.ironmanlive.com as well. |

Yes, the roads were pretty rough for a lot longer than I expected, but I didn't flat, and didn't see anyone on the side of the road changing flats (at least not on the rough sections). All in all it was a great day. I hope everyone enjoyed their race! |

Both the 1.5mi of no passing zone and the long stretch to the turnaround and back on some of the worst roads I have ridden. I doubt I will return to Muncie unless that changes. Sad as all other aspects of the race were great. |

It didn't slow me too much, but just added a level of discomfort I didn't need. Thought ever bolt on my bike would have come loose! Most likely won't return for a race that is just under an hour away, likely will choose a different half next year. Glad to complete my first after trying Muncie in 2012, which was shortened due to the heat (applauded that decision) |

I live on this course and train every day here and for the life of me can't understand why they picked that road when there are so many more that are in better shape ( 2 thumbs down WTC)....my advise, make sure you have EVERYTHING torqued down and tightened, your bike is going to vibrate like no tomorrow for close to 16 miles .... also, I see some of you are wondering about hotel, try surrounding towns like.... New Castle, In (10 miles from race sight)...... Winchester, In (10 miles), Daleville, In (10 miles).... Unfortunately its not as simple as picking a road that is in "better shape." I spend hundreds of hours a year working with municipalities, Dept Of Trans, Police Dept, etc working on finding routes that work for everyone. We have been incredibly fortunate over the years in Muncie to have used US35 and US36 but the detour routes that were involved for motorist were terrible. We worked with INDOT to come up with a new route that still allows us to use US35 but allows motorist to use US36 to cut over to SR3. Randolph County has been a huge help and allowed us to use CR1100W for the event. As someone who has been on nearly every Ironman and 70.3 course across the US, I will say the new stretch of road used (CR1100) is no worse than the majority of our courses! It's pretty common. Is it as smooth as using US36? No it is not. The short stretch of road between US35 and CR1100 on CR900 is the worst part as far as road surfaces go. I still expect very fast bike times and we will continue to provide great support out there. Our course guys will make sure you have the best conditions possible. Looking forward to another great event next weekend, this will be the 34th year for the event in Muncie! I will be in touch to assist in having this course changed....it was unsafe...bottom line |
